No I agree, when something is wrong, done wrong or going wrong then it can be criticised. I just don't agree with your comment about them "******* away all the profits". If that were the case then they wouldn't keep using the model, hence I mentioned it's success over 25 years. I think the thing that impresses me the most is how rarely we have the duds just sat around doing nothing. The Pozzos use the global loan system very well and seem to be good at limiting the losses on any given player with loan fees etc. I'd say you should judge the system on the outcomes. We have, arguably, a top 10 (or at least a challenging top 10) squad put together using their system and with less money than those teams around us and many below us, including several now playing in the championship.

If we can't talk about our owns comings and goings, here one of our own moving again!

Morecambe have signed winger Piero Mingoia on loan from Accrington Stanley until the end of the season. He was one of our best hopes at one time, how things have changed (for the better)!

Completely forgot about him tbh! However his injury record is so atrocious, I wouldn't plan for him being involved in our first team again, which is a shame.

For £60k, I'd want a heavy treadmill, not one which will blow away in a breeze.

  9. From memory his previous injuries were all knee-related, which he appears to have overcome. His latest problem was a shoulder injury which required surgery - not sure that the two types can be connected. But it is a shame - he's too good for the SPL.

If I remember correctly, we signed Don Cowie for 60k and he was excellent for 6 months.

Expecting good things from this treadmill.

I see it said a lot on here that we limit losses by getting loans fees and using that as good business - do we actually have any proof that we have ever got decent fees for outgoing loans?
Plus, this season alone, we’ve had Kaboul, Zeegelaar, Okaka, Prodl, Zeegelaar, Britos, Penaranda all largely sat around doing very little to nothing. Not sure we get as many out on loan as suggested.

It’s not a criticism of the complete transfer policy as a whole. There are some very good sides to it that I’m sure other clubs are envious of - but it has small elements that don’t work.

One thing the history of the PL tells you is that no club goes anywhere by standing still. And that’s what Gino is doing with out defence.

I know I’m on a minority but the jury’s out for me in terms of them picking up gems, nurturing them and selling on for good profit. They did it brilliantly at Udinese - but I’d say we’ve done it as much as any club since then. Leicester did it with Mahrez, Kante, Drinkwater. Bournemouth could sell 3 or 4 players tomorrow and make huge profits. Burnley are selling Vokes for £10m after costing them a pittance.

As it stands, we are unique in that we buy a lot of prospects and litter them throughout Europe. But the results of it, in terms of their ownership of Watford, just isn’t that different from a lot of clubs transfer policy

I think Reids is correct with regards to the forwards situation.
Adding Lukebakio and Cucho to Deeney, Success, Gray and Penaranda and it looks far healthier. Far from perfect but better than this season in numbers/options and also Success will have a seasons worth of Premiership experience under his belt.

The forwards I would like to see sign though are Ryan Cassidy and Michael Folivi. Their contracts run out in 2020 so I really hope something is being offered soon. Maybe something will come after the Darren Sarll internal investigation?

  14. lowerrous

    lowerrous First Team

Meh, not really - as with at CB it's a continuing case of quantity over quality. Cucho has shown nothing yet to suggest he's ready to play regularly for us. Deeney will be another year past top fitness. Penaranda at first showings does not look like a goalscorer, more like a Pereyra-type player. Gray I'd be surprised if he's still here. Lukebakio is the only one who could maybe make an impact on the role Deulofeu currently plays, but he's also still very raw.

As for Folivi and Cassidy who you mentioned, Cassidy is still very young, while Folivi doesn't seem like he'll make it with us in the Prem given his age and complete absence of first team opportunities.

  15. I think I'm correct in saying that we are the only club ever to pay a fee for him.

  16. wfcmoog

Thing is, we need 3 striking options who are capable of offering something at Premier League level. Jury is out on Cucho and Lukebakio and Deeney has a role, as a battering ram one game in 5, but the rest are just dead weight.

There's no point in accumulating a bunch of strikers who offer nothing. When Success came on last night, I can't believe any of us expected anything other than the **** show he produced? What's the point in that?

You may well be correct with the first paragraph. I just see a lot of potential there.

My apologies for not making my second point clear in my initial post. I don't expect either Cassidy or Folivi to challenge for a spot next season but I'd like to see them sign at least 3 year contracts so we can nurture some home grown talent. They are raw but both look to have good abilities. There are several midfielders in the Development squad who I'd like to see given professional contracts too, so we don't lose them for next to nothing.

I know Success has been woeful of late but he offered something earlier in the season and Gray managed a few goals too. As I said, it's far from perfect but there are combinations in there which look promising to me.

A lot will also depend how the players currently in the squad do in the next 6 months if they are to remain here but Gracia seems to like coaching players rather than buying and discarding.

It's also a question of offloading those the club/coach don't want - if they can't get rid then we're not getting new ones anyway.

I agree the jury's out on Cucho, but Lukebakio has really delivered this season in the Bundesliga. I think that bodes well for him having an impact next season.

So we'd have Deeney, Deulefeu, Lukebakio as the three main options, Gray / Success as a back-up, then hoping that one of Cucho or Penaranda can surprise us and step up... I don't think it's necessarily looking awful.

Of course it looks a hell of a lot better if we can get a top notch player in, and it's likely some of the above will be sold or loaned out. But for next season I'm a lot more worried about the defence.

Not sure we ‘desperately’ need a centre back/extra defender.

Fans always want more but they love spending other people’s money.

No business in window is good business, I would think.

We have some painfully clear weak areas that have either gone ignored for quite literally years, or have been filled out with bargain bin rubbish like Sema.

I don't think it's unreasonable to have some sort of expectation that we might finally deal with these problematic areas, especially when we have such a chance to achieve something more than floundering above the relegation zone this year.

If we do finish 7th or win the FA Cup, then fair enough, people can say I told you so, but I don't think there's actually any ambition from the club to do either of those things.

The thing is when it comes to those strikers we have on loan, is that even if they do come back to us - the way we set up currently, we won’t just throw them in. They will get snippets off football and cup games most likely. Wilmot is only just getting a kick of the ball in the PL, Penaranda couldn’t make the starting XI in a game where we dropped 11 players.

I agree that if we signed anymore strikers it may further impede their route to the 1st team - but I think the current strikers we have will do that anyway such is our reluctance to see what these kids can do.

I really wouldn’t be surprised to see either Lukebakio and/or Cucho back out on loan next year and to see us plow on with the strikers we have again.

But at least we have the option to do the above...

The alarming thing for me is that we don’t have any defenders of prospect out on loan that we are excited about coming back. We have Wilmot and we are converting to play in CM.

Whatever way you look at it, we are continuing to desperately neglect the defence and especially the CB position.

Then I think as paying fans, we are allowed to ask questions when they rave about Richarlison to sell him after 12 months and not invest the money in required areas. Where’s that money gone? It may well have gone on pressing matters for the club that aren’t transfer relegated but the club wouldn’t have to give us chapter and verse about that but could imply that.

Not everything has to be as cloak and dagger as much as it is with our board/owner.

I don’t believe this is how Gino sees things.

He is running a business. No need to disclose anything to fans, rival clubs, media, auditors beyond the legal requirements.

    And he doesn’t.
