I have heard tonight......... £4.5 million up front plus add ons!

It's already signed and sealed and awaiting the January transfer window.

I do not know the source of this info personally but I have to say he looked pretty certain to me!

I will be amazed if the board risk £4.5 mil on one person (not doubting you or your source though).
Good piece of business if it did happen because even if we do go down, I think we could re-coup the money, and he is proven at Championship level.
Would this suggest Ashley is definitely on his way out?

Ash will only be on his way out if we get relegated.

Nugent would be a gamble now at that price, but if we stay up because of him it would have been worth it and we would be able to keep Ash.

But if we get relegated then we'd keep hold of Nugent who would bang them in for fun in the Championship and maybe sell Ash to recoup the money (or possibly have to sell them both if Nugent does well in the Prem, or sell neither if we follow Birmingham and West Brom's examples).

Lets hope you are right mate, but I also hope that we are not putting all our eggs in one basket? We still need at least one more striker, and a couple of other players

I would be pleasantly surprised if this came off but have my doubts.

As I have said on countless occasions a punt on Nugent would be an investment with his skills at his age.

I wish these things didn't leak until they were official. If the Is aren't dotted and the Ts crossed he could be nicked from under our noses as we did with Danny. The club seems to leak like a colander, which is something Mark Ashton needs to sort out.

I personally don't think at that price it would be much of an investment, the profit wouldn't be much. An investment, to my mind, would be signing Billy Sharpe from Scunny for around £1.5m (like Ashton to Norwich).

How long are your legs this morning KingJames? about 6 inches longer than last night I would guess!

I dont want to start the hammering your expecting, But, were not the only club chasing Nugent! Harry may have said he's not interested but dont let that fool you, he's just testing the water.

Chances of Preston selling their star striker in the January sales, when their currently sitting second, Zero unless someone pays silly money! With 18 months still on his contract theyre more likely to wait till the summer. Having missed out on promotion so many times I'm betting they'd rather have the 20million odd from promotion than the extra couple from cashing in now, with the chance of keeping him if they go up.

Having said yesterday that he wants to bring in 5 players in Jan, Aidy would have hard job doing that having blown (probably) all the money on one player!! even if a couple are loans.

I'd prefer the Billy Sharpe type option, players who will jump at a chance of the prem and not be devastated if we get relegated.

nugent would be a superb buy, but it isn't going to happen.

Any club would need to offer in excess of £4m for him and that isn't going to be little old Watford.

With Preston riding high they have no need to sell except if silly money was offered.

It probably is a done deal. But you didn't say it was a done deal that he's coming to Watford.

Various other clubs are still getting linked to him this morning. Let's hope your source knows more than the press.

According to the Toffeeweb, Everton are gonna make a £5mil bid in January.

This sheds light on the fact he's a NW boy being lured by a NW club.

There is absolutley NO WAY we'll sign Nugent! I hope we do, but he'll end up at Everton seeing as he's an Evertonian!

Why would he want to sign for us over his boy hood club? They're in no danger of going down...chances are if he joins us he'll be back in championship next season!

Sharp from Scunny would be a better signing at £1,000,000 and a loan deal for someone!

  19. kingjames77

    kingjames77 Squad Player

I know it goes against everything, but signing Nugent really would be IMO a statement of our intentions.

Lets be fair, we shouldnt really be bottom based on our displays this season.

To stay up, we need to raise the bar and this particular signing would be just that.

The beauty about speculation is that everyone gets linked but its all irrelevant until somebody actually bids... the chap i spoke to seemed incredibly confident about this deal. The price (including add ons) also seems to fit.

Also you must remember that Sheff Utd spent £7million in the summer on transfers against our £4mil..... theoretically we've still got a few quid to spend, possibly up to £10mil. In my oppinion a small gamble if that ensured prem survival.

    Nugent - £4.5
    Rossi - Loan
    Bardsley - £1mil
    Jarvis (gillingham) - £1mil

Surely this little shopping list in January isnt unreasonable??????

  20. jobr

Your shopping list is totally unreasonable, because of Nugent (it isn't happening and won't happen).

Take off Nugent and rest assured we will make enquires about all those other three.

There is also speculation of us renewing enquires about Edwards and McAnuff.

Striker wise we will ask about the two lads at Southend and Scunny, but they have looked at someone more established in a higher league but I haven't been able to find out who.

There was also talk about taking Kiely on loan till the season end with a view to a permanent deal come the summer. Whilst we don't need him now there are concerns that if Fosters knee goes again he will be recalled permanently and with Alec likely to move to solely coaching next season we need another keeper. loach's development has been hampered by his broken foot although he is now back playing a month earlier than expected.

The way I see it... Eastwoods gonna cost at least £3mil whereas I think £4.5mil for Nugent is a fair deal...

I cant really comment because i know absolutely diddly squat about both Eastwood and Sharp!

What about Lee Hendrie??? He's bang on form..... (need the middle of the park beefing up!)

Is a £2mil bid for Heidar out of the question???????

  22. UEA_Hornet

    UEA_Hornet First Team Captain

Isn't he on loan with our rather smelly caravan dwelling inferiors up the road at the moment?

You're right that £4.5m for Nugent is a fair deal...but only on paper. The real world dictates that he's an Evertonian, Everton have been interested since the year dot, he's never left the north west, other more established Premiership clubs are sniffing around and Preston aren't in desperate need of selling. All that adds up to make Nugent to Watford for £4.5m rather unrealistic - though we shall see!

I think Sharpe is the best target. He's young, got a good repuatation in the lower leagues and in need of the step up. He'd also not cost more than a couple of million max. I also don't think he'll really be on the radar of any of the established Premiership clubs until he's proved himself (a la Ashton at Norwich). Unfortunately with Colin getting a nice big kitty to spend for Xmas I can see him ending up signing for the Blunts, especially as he can then stay oop north. The signing would also enable Colin to get the striker fix his awful addiction requires on a 6 monthly basis.

Hendrie was an good target back in the summer and O'Dreary showed what an idiot he is/was by wanting to ship him out. Unfortunately O'Neill has a bit more sense than that and wants him back in the fold. I think the Stoke loan deal was more to build up match fitness than a sign he's on his way out. As for Heidar...I think Fulham would chew our arm off for £2m, as that would represent a profit for them on a squad player. Sure he should be a target, but the bidding should start much lower in my opinion.

Decent reply UEA... thing is though, i cant see how Everton really want to sign another striker. Theyve got Johnson and Beattie BOTH expensive and fairly recent signings.... then McFadden and Leon Osman who looked quality at the weekend. Then theyve got that Anichebe kid whos meant to be the next big thing!!!
So a big bid for Nugent IMO doesnt seem that realsitic either!!

Very true Evertonians are getting annoyed at Beattie’s apparent lack of effort, maybe we could even make a loan enquiry for him? I still think he’s a good player, and he seemed to show effort on Sunday, setting up the goal, (which was totally ignored by the fans in the pub).
At the same time the Everton fans I know don’t think they have any transfer budget left…

Is a £2mil bid for Heidar out of the question?

Aidy has been quoted as saying that he has not approached Foolham for heider and has no intentions of doing, therefore unless he has been either misquoted or had a serious change of heart then i think it is out of the equation.

  28. Big Dave Airey

If we do go for him we shouldn't pay anymore than £1.3mil that we got for him. He's not improved at Fulham. Possibly got worse with lack of match practice.

Plus he's no a few years older and turns 30 next year.

    I say look elsewhere.

Well the price seems to fit.... rumours today about Middlesboro about to make a bid for Nugent... Apparently they had a £4mil bid knocked back in the summer and are returning with a £5mil bid.

Prestons chairman, today, has as good as told their fans that they'll be selling Nugent if not in January then in the summer. He reckons that due to their average attandance of 13k for each game, they cannot afford to keep Nugent!!!!!!!!!

Apparantly again, Nugent wont sign a new contract and has expressed a desire to leave sooner rather than later which may explain his fairly low tally of 5 goals this season!

Dunno, ive still got a fairly good feeling about this one!

Your missing the main point that that money would use ALL of our transfer funds available therefore stopping us from any further strengthenings.. we all agree it would be a good buy but the chances of us doing a deal worth that much for him is unrealistic.
