See ya Danny you tart. Will never forget that attempted back heel flick on the last day of the season instead of sticking the ball in the back of the net like any normal person would. Next.
Watch out. He'll trip over or fall over the sofa and be straight on the phone to his usual personal injury lawyer. You'll be homeless by teatime. Or worse, you'll be stuck with the useless lump for 6 months while he contributes nothing.
Don't care that he's gone, that was fully expected, but I am disappointed we couldn't get even get a small fee for him. Would we have had to pay him off for the remainder of his contract too?
With the exceptions, Cliff Hilton, Tom Whaley, Wilf Rostron Pat Rice, Brian Talbot, Manuel Almunia...
Depends on the terms of the arrangement. If he was desperate to leave yet we had no bids for him then the ball would've been very much in Watford's court as to the terms of the settlement (aka no or very small percentage of his contract to pay). If however we wanted to shift him off our books but had no bids then it's more likely that we'd have to pay 50-75% of his contract ooff.
I suspect both sides were equally happy to be free from each other tbf. Quite possibly £100-200k just down the drain just like that (although I suppose if we had got rid of him his new club might have wanted us to pay a chunk of his wages?)
Different vintage back then compared to now. They were then a 'proper' club. Not to forget the role of Bertie Mee who GT used as a sounding board and was not afraid to tell God if he thought an idea was not the right one.
Heard he sprained his wrist while signing the release. Expect him to see Gino in court demanding all of his wages are paid for the next 2 years.
Ok, so, firstly: No money is owed on either side, which makes sense. Secondly: You have to be ******* kidding.
Well Cliff, Tom (Whaley!) and Wilf had only brief dalliances, which I could blot out in my mind. Rice was more difficult, I just sort of tried to pretend he wasn't there. Talbot was rubbish and could be safely cursed. And Almunia was only a grudging acceptance. No, like I say. Can't get comfortable with 'em around. I can't look at any ex-Arsenal without seeing Perry Groves' grinning ginger head.
If say it’s clear that Gray and Deeney are going nowhere now anyway, regardless of Welbeck. We suddenly look light on numbers as it is.
I remember my dad's friend bluffing his way into the directors carpark at Bristol Rovers. Just pointed at the list and said 'that's me.' The attendant, just checking, read back, 'Bertie Mee?' 'Yep that's right. Double winning manager, Bertie Mee. That's me.'
I wonder if he did a Carl ****inson and threaten to go and break legs in training if he wasn't released. Obviously in this case it would've been his own brittle legs he'd break....
Has Welbeck actually been released? My understanding was that he had been given a free transfer? To my way of thinking 'released' means released from his contract whereas a 'free transfer' means that he is still under contract but will be allowed to depart for free if another club offers him another contract. I expect I've missed the relevant announcement but thought I would ask. Thanks.
https://www.watfordfc.com/news/official-welbeck-departs He has officially departed so is no longer at the club.
This literally makes no sense if true. I said his contract with us made no sense with us if it was pay per play vs pay if fit for selection, but it was pointed out to me that if he was desperate and we were the only offer, he’d take anything. Yet a year later after being injured for half the season and being relegated, he’s walking away from a paid contract to chance his arm at another deal? Something doesn’t add up to me.
I suspect that shows that his basic wage before playing bonuses was not that high (hence Welbeck wouldn't be forfeiting a huge sum), and he's confident of securing one final big payday somewhere
Shame I'd have kept a fully fit Welbeck over Deeney and Gray though Saying that not convinced he'd have had the right attitude for a championship fight and would probably get injured so meh.
Indeed, but if we were supposedly paying him an extra £50k a week for every week he played, he was never going to be a realistic option in the Championship, and that's putting aside whether he could get fit and stay motivated to play in the Champo
Surely he’d at least make sure that deal elsewhere was as good as signed up before agreeing to walk away from his deal with us ? I think it’s highly likely that we will have paid up part of his contract.
