They're allowed to play club cricket only.

...in Australia. So they can play first class cricket elsewhere, if anyone will take them.

    Argh!

With a Zola Budd naturalisation process, could we get Warner signed up for England before the Ashes?

It would be grand & generous gesture.

I read the official statement differently, that the bans apply to all cricket home and away.

Steve Smith - Suspension of 12 months from all international and domestic cricket
David Warner - Suspension of 12 months from all international and domestic cricket
Cameron Bancroft - Suspension of 9 months from all international and domestic cricket

I was going on this article which says, "The offending trio are banned from all international cricket and domestic cricket in Australia, but can still play and are encouraged to return to club level to help re-connect with the cricket community"

    https://www.cricket.com.au/news/pla...meron-bancroft-david-warner-australia-cricket

The Telegraph says the ECB are asking CA whether the ban applies here or not.

If the ban doesn't apply worldwide then it's bloody ridiculous, not to mention pointless.

Thought ban was just Australia, but other countries can invoke it as well - as the IPA have done.

Agree that clubs should take a long look at getting them in, but history suggests they will all be back at international level perhaps with the exception of Warner - look at the Pakistan bowler Amir.

Until clubs and fans refuse to accept the return of professional athletes who are proven cheaters then nothing will change. It shouldn't all be forgotten just because they score some runs or a few goals.

Smith is a good player now but will be replaced but his legacy will now be in tatters and any victories will have a question mark against them

Interesting that the cricket thread is proving the most active on the forum.

Did Duxbury last night hint at any WCC developments as part of the Pozzo project?

Let me be clear, these guys (and probably Lehmann) are cheats and planned to cheat which is terrible. However, as usual the media, and in particular the Australian media (who I think are the harshest of all) have quickly escalated this into something that seems like the worst crime of the century. I feel a bit sorry for Smith seeing him in tears today, he obviously massively regrets this and it will follow him now forever. It's not like they're murderers!

In cricket 'ball tampering' has gone on for years, but the Aussies were dumb enough to get caught making a blatant attempt at it and pre-planning it. The ICC handed down punishments in line with the laws, that everyone follows. I feel it would have been fair for Cricket Australia to maybe ban Smith and Bancroft for a shorter time span, and also say they are never to hold leadership positions again (in Bancroft's case he's still quite junior in the team). As for Warner he can feck off, a nasty nasty piece of work, more so than the rest. Same could be said for Lehmann but he seems to have got away with it.

    Cheats AND liars.
Not only pre-meditated cheating but in the face of clear evidence they still lied to the on field umpires before twisting events and hiding who was actually involved in the following press conference.

I've no sympathy for them at all. They tried to cheat South Africa and whether it's been going on for years is irrelevant.

In post #1187 I quoted David Warner from 2013 after Du Plessis was found guilty of a similar offence and I'll quote him again.

    David Warner told reporters afterwards:
"We hold our heads high and I'd be very disappointed if one of our team members did that.
"The rules are in place for a reason. If you're not going to use them why bother having them?
"If you're going to overstep the mark, be prepared to get fined and miss Test matches."

On a recent tour to India Steve Smith tried to cheat by asking for help on whether to use DRS for an lbw decision against either himself or whoever he was batting with at the time (I can't remember) and was rightly called out straight away by the on field umpires.
He described it as a brain fade and it will never happen again. Sound familiar?

Bancroft openly ridicules opposition players in press conferences (alongside skipper Smith!) so he's hardly an innocent in the integrity stakes!

Lehmann's version of events has been corroborated by key witnesses where he was supposed to have said 'What the f*** is going on?' before sending out Handsomb to 'find out what the f*** is going on.'
He then held a meeting at tea on that days play with all staff and players to again find out what went on.
He has also come out and said he must change his approach to how the Aussie team is seen, how it behaves and plays the game in respect of respect for the game itself and the opposition.
He's clinging on to a job he'll leave after next summers Ashes series.
That one of Cricket Australia's main sponsors have cut their deal one year into a three year contract may be the start of the end for him anyway.

On a general note I think cheating is dealt with too leniently, especially for those at the top end.

But if you're from a less attractive team/country who don't attract sponsors millions then the penalties are never deemed too over the top.

During all the commotion over in Cape Town a Zimbabwe official has been banned for 20 years, yes TWENTY YEARS, for approaching the current Zimbabwe captain to fix a match. It didn't happen, this is 20 years for approaching someone to do wrong.

I realise match fixing is as low as you can get and deserves a severe punishment but nobody is crying foul or that it's too excessive like many current and ex-cricketers are with regards to the Aussie 3. And where is the parity for actual wrong doing (1 year, 1 year and 9 month bans respectively) to approaching someone?

This high horse is beginning to chafe so I'll get off now.

Steve Smith must be joining the cast of Neighbours with that acting. I had completely forgotten about the fact that he has cheated before with the DRS, and guess who Smith looked up to signal in that one, Handscomb, the man who was sent down by Lehman this time as well. I reckon Lehman has jumped before he was found out.

    Quite.

Reflects the slimy mentality around the set up.

Interestingly, the only one to escape scot free is Suit Sutherland who appointed Boof & watered down CA's commitment to the Spirit of Cricket in their strategy doc.

Bloody hell why does everything have to be so melodramatic and hyped up like it's never happened before these days?!
Nobody died.. just a bit of cheating and one of many ball tampering incidents we've seen. Remember the first one to get caught was one of our own.. Michael 'dirt in pocket' Atherton.
I know people will use this for a bit of Aussie bashing.. but you know.. he who is without sin and all that.

    Some reading.. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ball_tampering

    and something to watch..

Stevo, you're right in that there is a sense of melodrama surrounding this episode but it's not without context.

Australian cricket continually hold themselves as the yardstick on how to play the game.
As individuals, as a team and as a cricketing body they cast an ultra critical eye on any supposed and, more often than not unproven, wrong doing by others.

It's this pious attitude along with an ultra aggressive vocal presence in whatever media outlet they can find that sees them not only largely unpopular outside of Australia but at home too. Over the last three or so years their standing at home has fallen as much for their attitudes off the pitch than on it.

They are not gracious in victory and when they lose rarely give credit to those they've fallen to yet they continuously talk of integrity, of the value of tradition and sportsmanship. Talk of playing 'up to the line' covers their indiscretions while clearly crossing any line that constitutes their supposed highly-held regard for the 'spirit of cricket'.

It's not just the cheating which we saw either. It's the calculated, pre-meditated nature of the thing involving more than a single player.
Their captain new something was happening but said 'What are you two up to? You know what, I don't want to know.' Great leadership.
It's the lies in the press conference that followed.
It's the hypocritical nature of their complaints to do with the crowds tormenting their players. Their own coach openly encouraged such behaviour towards Stuart Broad.
It's the stirring nature of their own press conferences which deflect from any cricketing matters to scrutiny of opposition players.
It's the wish to openly state they want to end players' test careers before a series starts. (Nathan Lyon)
It's them stating that both sides will use any means available to get reverse swing before a series starts. (Darren Lehman)
It's their official twitter feed questioning opposition players behaviour during a days play, again diverting media attention from the actual game.
If you complain about their behaviour you're shot down as whinging but they bleat and cry foul louder than anyone.

Past players have joined as one to say they're pleased that chickens are coming home to roost after being on the receiving end of accusations and over the top bullish behaviour while the Aussies paint themselves as the saints they most definitely are not.

During that press conference where Smith & Bancroft admitted to cheating (in a roundabout kind of way) not once did they actually apologise to the team they were trying to gain an unfair advantage over. They lied and basically apologised for getting caught, justifying they hadn't done anything too wrong because the umpires hadn't changed the ball.

The umpires got it wrong at that moment but the Australians have been gradually getting it wrong over a length of time.

Either go all out to win at any cost or play with a smile and respect the game and your opposition. You can't do both.

The Aussies are a bit cocky.. always have been. Especially when it comes to sport.
But people are near salivating over this. Could it be because they nearly always beat us?

We’ve beaten them on more occasions than vice -verse since 2005.

I admit I felt a twinge of sadness for Smith today but it soon passed. If ever there was a story that shows that just a momentary lapse in standards can bring your life crashing down in sport, this is it. The punishments are fair and just. The fact that Bancroft and Smith spoke more or less jointly today says a lot - Warner is the main instigator in all this and I doubt CA will touch him again.

Lehmann finally did the right thing. But James Taylor has said it best in his column in the Standard - from his (few) England outings, it is inconceivable that any conversation about swing, conditions or bowling in general happen without the bowlers and coaches involved. I’m still convinced that Starc/Lyon/Hazlewood/Saker/Lehmann (at least) knew about this. I would also pass a short ban on Handscomb. He knew full well what was going on and instructed Bancroft to hide the evidence as he’d been caught on camera. He’s complicit and is also a cheat.

For me, this has nothing to do with them being Australian. I’d be saying the same if it was England. The Aussies have judged themselves everything that is perfect aboitvthe way the game should be played over the past few years when in fact they are the complete opposite. They have had this coming so it is hardly surprising that the knowledgeable cricket press have had a field day with this. I think some of the coverage has been OTT and I hope it subsides now, as they aren’t criminals. But feel sorry for them? Nope.

Wasn't it the Aussies that bowled the last ball of a limited overs match underarm, because the opposition needed a six to get a result. That was awful.

In series wins yes (5 to 3) but in individual tests they are 19 wins to our 13 in that time. They tend to beat us more comprehensively and they also won 8 straight Ashes series prior to 2005.

Ok i was exaggerating that they nearly always beat us but they do have the upper hand.

I don’t really agree, even if I can see what your saying. People will remember who won the test series, not who won however many tests. In text cricket, it’s series victories that count.

I hate F1 - but as an analogy, the world champion doesn’t always win the most races. But he’s the one they all talk about at the end. In recent years, in Test Cricket, England have been better than Australia. The tide was turning after the last Ashes but they have blown that opportunity now it seems.

England and the Aussies are miles behind India, SA and probably NZ now.

I don't like people in any walk of life who tell you how to behave but don't follow those same rules.

I used to be a season ticket holder at WFC and watched football on TV a lot but over the last what, 6 or 7 seasons maybe, I've been to the Vic possibly half a dozen times and rarely watch any game on television. Why? I got sick and tired of watching continuous cheating and gamesmanship by the vast majority of teams. It's saturated the game to such an extent it's now the norm and most of the time it's the officials who get it in the neck instead of the diving, cheating players who try to con them. And just like I've accused the Aussies of bleating when things don't go their way I give you the majority of football managers and players. It's outrageous in the first place and also very borish behaviour over time.

So no, I don't like the Aussie cricket team. But then I just don't like cheats or dishonest people.

The fact they tried to cover this up and the reputation of some involved hardly helped their cause ..

I am sure our players aren't angels but like with some footballers a David Warner is going to cop more stick than most to due to his attitude and aggression in the middle.

Just to add something about coach Lehman.

He said he decided to resign after watching how hurt Steve Smith was in his most recent press conference, his tears etc.

So he didn't feel it necessary to resign because of the bullish culture and cheating behaviour of the side he presides over but because someone was a bit teary eyed.

That to me says a hell of a lot about where the current Aussie side sits with regards to their self proclaimed morals, ethics and attitude towards the game of cricket and the fellow professionals they line up against.
