SSN just reported Fulham’s Dawson interest too. They want loan, we want perm. Supposedly they’re going to formalise their offers for Dawson and another CB in the coming days.

If we sell Dawson, I think we’ll bring in two CBs - a right-footed replacement for him and a left-footed player to play on the other side. Allows us to have more balance for our back 3. Can’t see us replacing him with Mapps and Troost-Ekong.

 

Mapps is not the way forward. Sorry I like the guy but we must be looking at better. I believe Branthwaite went off injured during the week whom I would of loved. But a left footer is desperately needed in a three imo.

 

If the club were to re-sign Mariappa it would sum up to me how poor they are in identifying a half decent Centre Half. There are promising ones out there if they looked hard enough.

 

Wishful thinking with our track record in that position.

I'd say it's certain asking Mariappa to come back is the backup option in case we have a complete nightmare in that area of recruitment. Very odd for someone of his service to the club to have not been given a send off otherwise.

I don’t think it’s wishful thinking. Leventhal has repeatedly reported that bringing in a left footed centre back and reaffirmed that yesterday. That’s a priority regardless of whether Dawson stays or goes. If he does go, it wouldn’t be the end of the world if he goes, a left-footer comes in and then we have five out and out CBs (New LCB, Wilmot, Kabasele, Cathcart, Sierralta) with back up for the outside CBs in the form of Masina, Navarro or Janmaat, particularly if we are planning on reverting to four at the back once our midfield is more in shape.

 

I don't think bringing Mariappa would be such a bad thing in comparison to some of the dross we have been linked with.

 

It’s been a priority for a number of seasons. The head of recruitment and chairman have told us that. Leventhal has told us that. And it’s resulted in Dawson.

I hold the exact same hopes as you. But the fact remains that the recruitment in that area has been sub-standard across a number of windows - and the people in charge during those windows are still in charge. I hope we get what we need - but I do think it’s wishful thinking to expect it.

 

Well they said previously that upgrading CB was the priority. That’s not the same as saying it being reported that we are specifically looking for a left-footer, which is what I was highlighting. Whether that left-footer is actually any good is another issue.

 

Having initially thought Navarro might be a sensible alternative for cover at right back (only for him to be shown up as utterly inadequate against Oxford) I'm hesitant to suggest it, but Mariappa could continue to be a reliable, adaptable and cheap back up on the right.

No one wants him starting and he's obviously not the future, but we could definitely do worse.

I think he's being kept on the back burner - last resort in the result that we have a bad window. The farewell statement has been written by the club but they won't post it until the window is closed I bet.

 

You're right, we could do worse and we are poor recruiters of defenders so I wouldn't put it past us actually doing worse. However, the issue is that when we re-signed him, it was on the proviso he was backup and wouldn't be starting. And he ended up playing. A lot.

It's been misunderstood.

We're looking to sign a centre back 'with a left foot', bringing their total feet quotient up to two, rather than one with <2 feet.

 

We bought Dawson to be a premier league defender, I’d love to get rid of him, but the idea that a league lower we’ll look to replace him with a better player is wishful thinking in my opinion. He’s crap, but a league lower we won’t be going after anyone less crap.

 

But Mapps is quite similar to Navarro, he's going to get caught out if he's charged with going up and down the field all game

Yeah, that would make sense. Shame we couldn't do the same for Holebas, yeah Pearson must have pissed him off, but we could do with him now...

 

I think it would be based on the number of appearances . The more he plays the less we receive in transfer fees .

According to David Ornstein, Fulham are keeping an eye on Dawson after Marlon (another CB) failed his medical.
