Boys, who did we have in defense last time we were in the champ? Exstrand, Angella the Angel and Super Tommy Hoban? They were all better than Dawson werent they?

I’m clearly going against the grain in that I think given the slower pace of the championship, Dawson would be a very good defender at this level (he’s better than most of our rivals defenders) and would score a good number of goals from set pieces.

However, he isn’t quick enough for the PL and if we could get 8m for him, I’d snap their hands off. I imagine an offer would more realistically be half that.

He was the main reason we did not beat the Ar5e...his "defending" for the penalty & the 3rd goal set new standards of irony for a "Prem" (sic) CB.

Where is this 8m valuation coming from? If, and I mean if we got anything for him then we should be happy. Use any monies gained for a left sided CB.

I'm going to start an account and in grease to £10m. Happy days.

He wasn't outstanding for West Brom, whether that's because he just doesn't have it in him or because he couldn't be arsed (and if it's the latter, I don't see him being any more arsed for us)

He did make 45 appearances in all competitions in 18/19 season, that's a lot for someone who's not committed.

  11. He was great for WBA but must bear in mind they were an incredibly defensive side so it was pretty easy to look good.

Dawson is an adequate CB to have in the Championship, I have no doubt of that.

We simply cannot sell before we buy in that area - we aren’t in a position to do that as we don’t have the numbers.

He’s not good enough for the PL we know that - but given what players are going for, I’d say £8m is about right. Anything less than that and we will struggle to replace him with a player of even adequate Championship ability without having to spend more than we’d be getting. And we are poor recruiters in that position as it is.

When looking for new CB’s we should be looking for players who are comfortable in this divsion and can translate up to the PL if needed. Dawson can do the former but not the latter. But the key would be the replacement...I have zero faith we would do a good deal here.

I'm not saying he jacked it in (though WBA fans suspect he did), I'm just saying he wasn't outstanding in the Championship for them. He's fine when you set up defensively and ask him to do the dirty work and nothing else, but anything else, he struggles

We got him for £4m, didn't we? I don't know, maybe he was coming towards the end of his contract, but with Covid I doubt we'll fetch £8m for him. I know we can do with defenders (especially left-footed ones who are comfortable with the ball), but I don't think we'll bring in any more players until we sell

If I'd have thought we'd get £8m for Dawson he would have been straight on my list of players to be jettisoned in the effort to balance the books.

I can confirm that it was a speculative post by me earlier up the thread, based on Burnley having a lot of money to burn if they sold Tarkowski and him having a longish contract. Plucked out of the air, didn't expect it to be subject to debate.

    I am, regrettably, fake news.

Don’t know what he earns but I’d be surprised if a loan deal is beneficial to us. I’d happily see him sold if we bring in a younger replacement who could potentially succeed in the PL.

Yeah I suppose it was a pretty obvious thing to say. I had just typed “younger replacement” but then had visions of all the joke replies about signing some useless teenager from Tring Athletic, or Giraldi’s son or whatever.

I maintain that losing Dawson without signing 2 CB's would be a massive mistake. It wouldn't take a huge injury issue to leave us short.

Don't see the point of letting him go out on loan. Just sell him if we want rid.

It didn't stop them selling Estupinan, leaving us with no one apart from rookie Stevenson. Although I agree with you, I don't think they'd give it a second thought about selling Dawson without a replacement.

They've done much the same in midfield, letting Doucoure go and not playing Capoue with the knowledge that Hughes is out for a while.

I'm sure we'll sign another CB, even if we don't lose Dawson.

Ivic said in his press conference yesterday that he still wants 3 or 4 new players who will improve the team; I reckon that's a CB, LWB, and 2x CMs.

Agreed. I think he was surprisingly open and said explicitly that LB and CM were two positions we’re looking to recruit. Leventhal has also repeatedly stressed (including yesterday) that were after a left-footed CB. If we can sell Dawson for close to what we paid for him, that’s good business. Troost-Ekong or Tosin Adarabioyo would be younger, cheaper (in terms of wages) upgrades.

If we get rid of Dawson, I'd expect us to bring in a starting CB (possibly Troost-Ekong) and Mariappa as a back-up.

    That would leave us with:

  27. Did he emphasise, verbally double underline and put in bold capitals, this bit "....who will improve the team...."
  28. Bear in mind Troost isn't first choice at Udinese so as a reserve may not be as brilliant as we are all hoping.....
"......remains a step behind Becao , De Maio and Nuytinck in the defensive hierarchies......."

He's captained Nigeria and made 65 league appearances in the past 2 years. Surely he can't be *that* bad.
  30. lowerrous

I didn't put that in quotes myself.

Checking his conference again, his exact quote was: "we need for sure if you ask me 3 or 4 players who will join us and will improve our squad and make our squad stronger".
  31. I know..
"Squad".....What a mistaka da maka. 3 or 4 more free transfers then.....you can never have too many cheap squad fillers....
  32. Burnsy

Worth noting Nigeria aren’t as good as they once were and Udinese have been pretty garbage for the last 2 years.

Troost-Ekong would be a step up I think but I agree with @The undeniable truth - expectation should be tempered a bit.
