Sell him permanently or keep him.

  2. Jumbolina

Id have kept him. He’s not going to be one of the unsustainable earners and would be an asset in championship. That said I’d have said selling him or a loan with obligation to buy would have made sense just to further bolster the finances but if only offered the limited deal we were I’d have used him for promotion push.

Looks like "sell him" was not an option as it seems no-one wanted to buy him outright.
"Keep him" only makes sense if Ivic wants to use him & if we still don't need to reduce costs this season, now that we still have Capoue's wages to pay.

The fact that we have taken what was offered suggests to me we are still struggling financially even after all the outgoings we have effected.

How so? It could have just been that we saw no point in wasting a hefty chunk of wages on a player we don't even need anyway.

See my answer to Burnsy...your comment re: his wages may well mean we still needed to reduce costs some more & maybe Dawson was the player Ivic was willing to see go rather than someone else...

  7. Burnsy

    Burnsy First Team

It suggests to me that we weren't prepared to 'play our hand' for the rest of the week - if we are struggling financially, then surely you wait until the last day of the window to try and get a permanent sale? Whatever way it's dressed up, we have sold him with 4 days of the window to run...if he's only a backup for WHU, there's no reason we couldn't tell them to wait until the end of the window. Their offer was hardly so enticing that we should have allowed ourselves to be held to random by it.

  8. Since63

Well I agree with Burnsy & Jumbolina that, if it were possible, it would have been better to keep him than accept WHU's offer. The fact that we were ready to accept what we have leads me to believe we had to cut more costs somewhere & that this was the least negative option.
Just my interpretation of the decisions being taken, of course.

Or the need to free up some cash was such that we adopted a "bird in the hand" approach so as not to risk seeing the "2 in the bush" fly away on Friday?

Even if that is true regarding Ivic, he doesn't make the deal to let the player go.

Pep could suddenly say to the board at City that he no longer intends to use De Bruyne. You'd still expect the board to get a reasonable deal and not just push the player out at all costs.

  11. Since63

Many of your putative "GDL" have already consistently criticised him for the errors that have led to where we are. He's been hung, drawn & quartered for that ad nauseam. What we should be discussing is whether his decisions NOW are acceptable or not, whilst not forgetting many of them are only necessary due to his previous failings.

  12. Burnsy

But that's called playing the window - something we aren't good at. If Dawson was still at the club come Saturday morning, he's hardly the worst player to have in this division. I really don't think the club are so hard for money that they are just desperate for his wages off the books - we are paying money to Glenn Murray after all.

  13. Since63

I think you're missing my point...if Ivic was told "we have to move one player out" & was given a list of possibles (eg Dawson, Kiko, Sema), he could have said "Dawson is the one I'd be less unhappy to lose".
I doubt Ivic actually wants any more players to leave or he won't end up with his "big squad"....which, again, leads me to believe the financial situation is still not all that good.

  14. Jumbolina

Fair enough. This could have been needed now circumstances have changed with Capoue.

  15. Burnsy

But if we are financially desperate enough to get his wages off the books, that doesn't explain some of the incoming deals we have done. Or sticking to our guns over the Capoue/Valencia deal.

I suspect it's just Dawson saying he doesn't really want to be here unless he's reassured he'll get plenty of minutes. He didn't get that reassurance so has sought an exit. I just think the club have 'blinked' too early in taking the terms of this deal.

But whilst our squad from last season was evidently not good enough, I don't think it was awful enough that we should have minimal takers for any of our players. Seems quite convenient that every player we have sold has had the excuse that 'there was likely only one club interested' afforded to them.

I think Murray was meant to be a direct & very much cheaper replacement for TD. I don't think anyone really thought no-one would have made a serious offer for him by now, but they haven't. I think we clearly need SOME reduction in wages etc now, hence the Dawson deal. The club have decided we cannot afford to run the risk of not getting someone off the books, so they've jumped at the chance of off-loading Dawson. Not ideal, but seemingly less damaging than having everyone still here after Friday.
Trying to "play the window" with someone who has attracted only limited interest as an obvious back-up player & who the coach may have intimated is only 5th choice is maybe not the cutest decision. Playing it with Sarr is obviously a completely different issue. And I think we DID play it (& well) with Capoue.

Whilst I see that as the result of the transfer market being pretty well 5crewed.

In fairness the only other club reportedly interested in him were Burnley, who have spent 2.5m all summer and are not expecting to spend any more.

Wish we could have played more hardball with West Ham, but if we wanted him off our books, maybe this was the best offer.

And Fulham who are still rumoured to be after another CB. And any number of other clubs who may want a backup CB in the last hours of the window. I just don't think it's the best deal to have made. Whether it's the only one that could have been made, we will likely never know.

There are obviously more positives to him leaving than negatives.

I'm sure they had explored all avenues to move him on before agreeing the WHU deal. If Fulham (or anyone else) were a serious consideration we'd have waited but I guess WHU would have moved onto another target if we'd allowed it to get too close to the wire.

But all avenues aren’t explored or closed until the window closes, that’s my point. I don’t disagree in the main with what you are saying - but why is there a continual avoidance of labelling a deal as a bad deal on here? More or less every sale we’ve made has been given the same excuses.

    ‘Only club interested...’
    ‘Sure we explored all avenues...’
‘Have to take what we can get...’
‘The player is crap so any deal is good...’
    ‘Loan fee’s...’

Yes there are factors, internal and external, that make elements of the above true. But there are also factors which make the criticism of our outgoing deals valid too. We can’t accept one and deny the other as that’s just blinkered.

Do you seriously think they won't have had extensive discussions with any potential interested parties before committing with WHU ?
Do you really think they should be sitting by the phone until Friday evening hoping that someone rings up and says "Don't suppose you've got a Craig Dawson for sale?" Do you think that's how it's done ?
I don't think anyone is saying it's a great deal. I think posters are just relieved that he's at least off the payroll.

Urgh this forum is becoming so bloody boring at the moment! I might have to take a break because the constant bickering is becoming ridiculous.

It might be a great deal, it might be a ****ing atrocious deal.

Fact is we will never know and to be honest it doesn’t bloody matter either way.

Seem to be several users at the moment determined to have the last word on absolutely everything.

Does it always have to be so black and white on here? It's not a great deal or a crap deal. It would have been great if we sold him for £4m, and it's a shame nobody wanted him permanently (who can blame them?). But it's clear either he didn't want to be here, or Ivic doesn't rate him. In either case, it's decent news we've got him out the door for this season, because there's no point having him here under either of those circumstances.

May have been worth the risk of holding out for a club that inexplicably wanted this clown on a permanent basis, but I can see why it's a risk we haven't taken in this market. If West Ham moved on to other back-up options (wouldn't be hard to find someone of Dawson's standard) and no-one else came in, we'd be stuck with a player Ivic doesn't seem to want, and who wouldn't be happy being 5th choice in the Championship. We'd also have to shell out whatever his wages are. Some West Brom fans reckon he was £40k+ but who knows. If we end up switching to a back 4 he'd be even less likely to make any impact.

If only we had any recent evidence to show that this isn't the case. Utter liability. Like Kabasele, he always has a mistake in him, but at least Kaba has other attributes like his pace to make up for it. Dawson has nothing, apart from a decent knack for popping up with a goal, which I will give him credit for.

No I don’t think that’s how it’s done. But I also don’t think the way we have at times behaved in this window is how it’s done either.

Let’s leave it at that as some people on here seem to take offence at healthy debate (not yourself) and think it’s an argument.
