A question. To takeaway or not to takeaway?
World War 3 has broken out this evening between the teens and their dad when, after being told that, to give Mr HH a break from cooking (he is our head chef) tonight was a “picky” night for food, the teens asked me if they could have a Dominos. I said yes, as long as it was also ok with dad. Turns out it wasn’t, as he thinks getting food in that’s been prepared by someone else is exposing us to unnecessary risk.
I am stuck in the middle of this but, honestly, think he’s being a tad over zealous. So is he being OTT or am I being too relaxed? Answers on a postcard please...

Just left the house for first time in two weeks (except running) and drove to pick my son up from west London. There were people everywhere in London, strolling around, chatting. Massive difference to where I live. I was shocked.

Don’t see how it’s any different to picking something up off a supermarket shelf, personally. Especially something like loose fruit and veg.

I was pissed off when I heard about the pangolin because I’ve only just learned how to play it.

    Slight return.

What time will the first tweet or picture of a group of people at the beach appear..?

I mean if they are social distancing then no one will mind.

But feel they might be a bit of backlash against the advice due to the good weather.

Discussing this with my dad is unbearable. He is insistent that this is basically a full blown apocalypse and that "hundreds upon hundreds of millions are going to die" and that the world as we know it is basically permanently finished.

Apparently scientists are all clueless and don't have the slightest clue what they're doing or predicting at all, and we are completely screwed.

No idea. Stay home and live in paranoia waiting for the end of days by the sounds of it.

It's funny because he's a massive, ex bodybuiling, ex kickboxing, east-ender, but also happens to be possibly the biggest paranoid hypochondriac on the planet. I can be a bit of a hypochondriac too, but he is in another stratosphere with it.

He does have a heart condition which means that on a personal level he is very much one of those most at risk right now, but how he's come to the insistent conclusion that hundreds of millions are going to die as a direct result of this virus, when there's no scientific based evidence, data or predictions to support that, I'm not sure.

I went to the doctor and he told me that I had hypochondria.

I said ‘Oh ******* hell not that as well’

Doctors and Nurses dying because of a lack of PPE is a national disgrace, remember them when this is all over. Where is all the kit we would have needed if this was biological warfare? Just shows how ill prepared we would have been. Nurses in South Korea I think were wearing more or less hasmat suits while our nurses seem to be wearing glorified binbags. Anyone that gets put in the Nightingale warehouse is more or less screwed to by the look of it.

Not bashing the Tories this is a failure of succesive Governments who simply didnt think this would happen.

Looking around the world, we’re hardly alone in that. The ones you give examples of being prepared are coincidentally the ones that have actually gone through it in the last century.

  21. In the Cuomo (NY Governor) conferences it's been repeated over and over if people need ventilators the odds aren't great, and the longer people stay on ventilators the lower the odds become.

The Nightingale are taking patients on ventilators from London hospitals.

Let's be frank about it, it's a place to put people who don't have great odds. People likely to die. Ideas that it's some marvellous recovery centre are fantasy.

  23. If we let it run its course and 80% caught it and 2% die (which would not be an exaggeration as in no way would the NHS cope) that would be just over 1m dead in the UK alone.

In the absence of an exit strategy for the lockdown, advisors to Boris continue to point out it’s not just the economy being harmed. While people are being protected from the virus while in hiding, “there will also be actual harms in terms of mental health, in terms of domestic violence and child abuse, and in terms of food poverty.”

We may be swapping one undesirable public health outcome for a host of others.

We may, but frankly evidence is required or it's not happening.

And what is the counter to this? Tens of millions exercising more than they normally do, people's mental health being boosted by the help they receive or give others, parents spending more time with their children, millions missing a stressful daily commute, millions (including thousands of asthmatics) experiencing clean air where they live for the first time ever, thousands fewer accidents on the road and at work etc....

It can't continue, for sure, but for many it's a pleasant hiatus, for others a chance to reevaluate. And lets be clear, for many of those suffering poverty through this that's not a new experience. Hand to mouth is their business as usual, tolerated by the many.

There is a good argument for having an exit strategy, to use it at the very first opportunity and another good one to ensure the Government's safety net spreads widely and generously. But the lockdown is necessary and unevidenced arguments imagining other people's mental health, fantasised levels of abuse and poverty that will simply continue once the lockdown ends is a Trojan Horse for self-interest.

As per my earlier post, the army are running it and they are triaging based on whether people have a realistic chance of surviving.

They havn't even started taking patients yet at the Nightingale, not tuntil early next week, and listening to the clinical lead on the news yesterday, they are planning to take those that do not have any underlying conditions that could require further hospital treatment. I got the impression that it was those that weren't as serious that end up at Nightingale. I also didn't get the impression that it was the army triaging, but that one of the reasons there would only be 500 beds initially was because they needed to ensure they had enough NHS staff there.

    But, I may be wrong.
