It starts off with a wrong assumption. I haven’t heard anyone say it’s restricted to sneezes or coughs. It’s why people are so freaked by joggers exhaling near them as they waddle past.

So it doesn’t change anything and doesn’t support an argument to change the strategy at this point. In fact, if anything, it’s the opposite. If we relax it will clearly spread very quickly and risks an overwhelming epidemic.

    virus day 12
So a lot happened in the last 24 hrs. Midday yesterday I started to get breathing difficulties. Constantly out of breath, over breathing to compensate and getting really light headed and needing to lie down. Continued overnight so this morning we called 111 and 3 calls with nurse and GP later got an ambulance issued. They were excellent, checked everything from blood, heart, BP, chest etc and told me everything was perfect. The assumption is that I was “panic breathing”, breathing too quickly and too shallow. A bit embarrassing but the best news possible and better safe than sorry. I had a bag packed ready to go into hospital so I’m very happy to unpack it. I was seriously worried. Mrs TuT thinks she might feel a bit better which is very good news, not least because she’s about a day ahead of me. I’ll believe it when I see it though.
    As you were....

The only way to almost certainly guarantee you won't get it or spread it,assuming you haven't had it/got it, remains to be indoors 24/7.

Based on what you say, I would be interested to hear your own thoughts & views in terms of how some normality can ever be restored? I hope you don't reply saying wait to test 60m people!

It’s a reasonable question. If we continue social distancing then we should find that new infections will drop off a cliff within a cycle of a few weeks. So maybe by the end of May, start of June we can begin to relax restrictions, sector by sector.

However, they need to be backed up by,

Testing and quarantine for any new cases and all their contacts.
    Mass general testing.
Widespread use of temperature taking to access mass transport, mass events, for all migration and many workplaces.
Possible widespread use of masks in certain situations.
Risk assessment for all public establishments, how to make use as safe as possible.
Support for vulnerable people to maintain voluntary measures.
    Treatments as they are developed.

But that’s off the top of my head and I’m sure there are more thought out strategies out there.

Signs are that Singapore is now starting to lose its grip on the virus and so it's ramping up its countermeasures to include a lockdown similar to the one we're currently under.

Blimey, you've had bad luck, but glad that the checks show everything OK. I actually went out for a gentle run (well, jog) at 5.30 this morning.

Continued best wishes to you both.

Four European countries (Austria, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Czech Republic and Slovakia) have introduced compulsory wearing of face masks in public. For example, supermarkets in Austria hand out protective gloves and face masks to all their customers. In addition. the number of people allowed in the supermarket are limited (as in the U.K.), cashiers are protected by plastic windows and the use of paper money (which can carry the virus for several days) is not allowed. Studies in the U.S.A. and Hong Kong have suggested that using face masks reduces the risk of spreading the virus, but may also provide a degree of protection form the virus. As a result, the World Health Organization are reassessing their advice.

Hopefully you have turned the corner too if the Mrs is really getting better.

It does sound like you have had it bad. Others, like Hancock, have had something a lot milder.

Are there two strains or is it simply some people have reacted differently to the virus than others? It's certainly not just a matter of age or underlying health issues though obviously people's general health when they contract the virus will have a part to play.

I hope you're having a better day today anyway!

I would’ve thought the personal protection from wearing one of those basic surgical masks would be minimal, but the protection they would provide to everybody else from somebody who was contagious wearing one would be absolutely huge, as long as everyone wore one that is. It would definitely be a sensible approach for places like the tube to have to wear one.

I don’t think there is any solid evidence there are two strains. It’s simply that it’s a new virus that no immune system has encountered before, some will take it in their stride and others will struggle. I’ve read that even though the flu mutates, it’s a bit like a few pieces of a puzzle being moved around. Some people’s immune systems can still recognise it and deal with it slightly better than they otherwise might. Not something that can happen with corona virus.

Yes there was a report on the news here that the Gardai were going to call all those who have reported domestic abuse in the past to speak with them and check on their welfare.
They must be very concerned if they announced it on the national news.
Stands to reason someone who has done it would be volatile with lockdown

Uh oh. Queenie has been pulled in to address the nation on Sunday. 8pm. Don't get too drunk while socialising with your mates in the park in the sunshine Britain or she'll be very very cross with you.

Mhai husband and I understand fully the sacrifices being made by the British people to defeat this disease, confined as we are to a 1000 room Castle set in a mere 13 acres.

It’s likely the same strain. I’d provide data but ducking exhausted this week.

People on ar5ebook reporting that lots of people out and about locally today. Whilst this is still happening it's going to make this nightmare go on for longer. How long until much stricter restrictions are applied?

Probably all local ar5ebook groups moaning the same thing, but seems like Matt Hancock thinks the same way as he made it clear that stay home this weekend was an ‘instruction’.

There’s definitely been an uptick in people wandering and driving around the last 2-3 days. The novelty has worn off. Sunday will be a massive test of public cooperation levels.

Also, isn’t how big a “viral load” you were exposed to a factor in how badly you are affected? Which explains why young medics, with no underlying health issues, have succumbed to it?

Think the improving weather is also a factor. Forecast to be a lovely weekend which obviously won’t help keep people away from parks and beaches en mass.

My sister-in-law who I have mentioned on here as not being my favourite person, I recently accused of unnecessarily stockpiling food for her and her hubby about a month ago.

She told me just now on the phone that her kitchen cupboards have just, literally, fallen off the wall, smashing a marble worktop underneath, and causing a right mess of cornflakes lential and rice and dented tins.

She couldn't understand why I wasn't particularly sympathetic, and just laughed.

I mentioned before about conversations needing to be had about hospitalisation and death. Appears without any fanfare or announcement in a government press conference such things are starting to take place:

xpect this sort of thing to run and run and, if we don’t get a grip, to spread much wider.

Me too, although I’m still old school so my Kindle remains unused and I shall be reading a book. And I shall probably substitute the red wine with a gin since it’s sunny.
