I don't disagree, but the data in there wasn't necessarily specific to cruise ships. They're basically saying there's a possibility it might still be able to survive on surfaces up to 17 days later.

I don't blame him, the longer this goes on the harsher it will be for nearly the whole population due to a destoyed economy . Obviously eyes are on Italy and Spain.

Anyone else getting bombarded with emails from all sorts of obscure companies offering their pearls of wisdom about coronavirus? It’s a worse than the great GDPR avalanche of 2019.

Which is why I’d never go on a cruise ship. Not denying there are other places it’ll linger.

Excellent, after 4 years of telling us your world is gonna end and me telling you that it won't, you have finally seen sense and decided to look at the positives.

    You know it makes sense.

You're probably right. When sending out email mass messages, they are often done in batches because most infrastructure can't handle sending tens of thousands/millions of messages simultaneously. Mail applications often automate it behind the scenes, but it basically amounts to a staggered message send so the systems don't get overwhelmed.

I don't know how closely this maps to SMS (I'm not familiar with the underlying infrastructure used), but I would guess it might have similar limitations. Cellular data networks can be fairly heavily taxed even at the best of times.

    Yes. Lots.

All the marketeers know the whole population is a sitting duck atm & might be compelled to read junk/sales type emails a little more in depth than usual.

Therefore I have adopted a policy that any company that emails/rings or generally tries to 'sell' me their toot at this present moment, I immediately know the ethos of said company & will not deal with them in future.

I saw that idiot on the 6 O'Clock News. He was banging on about why the politicians get a free bar so he has the right to walk around exposing himself to the virus. The interviewer could have told him the MPs' bar was closed at the beginning of last week.

I noticed the FT are also running this story. I’m honestly not clutching at straws but does this not make absolute sense? The virus was spreading in China in December if not before (possibly as early as October) they only admitted human to human contact was possible on 21st January, and I’m pretty sure we didn’t ban flights from China until well into February?

So is it plausible to suggest that in this globalised world not one single infected Chinese person came to the U.K. between December and February?

If we’ve been building up such a level of infection why the consistent negative majority in testing? From the Government’s website,

As of 9am on 24 March 2020, a total of 90,436 people have been tested, of which 82,359 were confirmed negative and 8,077 were confirmed positive. 422 patients in the UK who tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19) have died.

You only test positive if you still have the virus active in your system. This is why we need the antibody test, which will look for the antibodies in your blood which show you’ve already had it.

I've received two texts from government. One saying that I should work at home if I can, the other saying I should stay at home.

I'm working at home anyway, and a keyworker, and it is perfectly clear to me what I need to do, and my 30 min run this morning at 5.45 is only time I'll be going out today. But it is really poor that there are such mixed messages.

Again, I can see how the social distancing whilst protecting the vulnerable and elderly could work as well as a complete shutdown when considering the medium term. But mixed messages are not good as people just exploit them, and choose what suits them personally. Sort out the comms, Boris.

Interesting thing for that article is this statement as well:

The research presents a very different view of the epidemic to the modelling at Imperial College London, which has strongly influenced government policy. “I am surprised that there has been such unqualified acceptance of the Imperial model,” said Prof Gupta.

Is that not the number that are infected at the time of the test i.e. the number that actually have the virus.

There was talk of s test for the covid-19 antibodies to determine the number that have had it but I don't think it has been developed yet.

I may be wrong but it is possible that many of the 82,359 had the virus but have recovered.

Edit: UEA beat me to it.

UAE beat me to it. I’d also add we’re only testing people that show up to hospital with possible symptoms. If people are following the advice the only people turning up to hospital at all should be the ones that have quite serious symptoms at that, so by my reasoning the ones that tested negative must have had normal flu or something else but perhaps have been in the at risk group. If these people had got actual corona earlier you would assume they would’ve got symptoms as well.

Long and the short of it is we need the antibody test ASAP. All you need to then do is test random samples of the population and we’ll have our answer. Worst case scenario we’re no worse off than we thought. Best case scenario and a lot of people have already had it and it’s nowhere near as deadly as we think. If we look at Germany and how many tests they’ve done we can already see the mortality rate is actually around 0.3-0.4% at worst.
