You might have actually hit on the natural evolution of this thread. Every now and again someone puts some sort of made up request or dilemma on one of these sites and then posts a selection of the gormless replies.

Sure! I live just outside Belfast but venture up North a fair bit! Derry is somewhere I've actually only stayed in twice, both trips last July. The first time I went up with my cousin to watch the Irish Open so we were actually only in Derry during the evening/night. The best place in terms of night life was Waterloo St, a series of different types of bars and a club or two. The bars are mostly very traditional Irish bars with plenty of live music but also some modern bars too. I'd recommend Peadar O'Donnell's as a good starting place. Tracey's next door should be avoided, it's an old man bar with a strong Irish Republican feel inside. My cousin and I left after one pint. On my second trip, with my girlfriend, we went back to Peadar O'Donnell's. We ate in Mama Masala, a reasonably priced Italian/Indian restaurant which was very good.

In terms of things to do, I'd suggest venturing round the coast to the likes of Portrush. Portrush is a lovely seaside town and it will host The Open this summer too. I was actually up on Monday visiting but unfortunately this time of the year it's very quiet. If you get good weather, then a visit to the Giants Causeway is always high up on visitors' wish-lists. Went for the first time in a while last Summer and got a tour and it was decent. Carrick-a-rede rope bridge not too far away either.

If the weather isn't great, and you have access to a car, I'd recommend going to Bushmills and getting a tour of the distillery. Fairly cheap tour and you get a couple of free whiskeys after it. Neither my girlfriend nor I enjoy whiskey but both loved the tour.

If you don't have access to a car and are staying in the city for the duration of your trip then I'm afraid I can't be of much help! It's a very historical city so plenty of museums/tours to do and of course you can visit the famous Derry walls. The bars and night life should make up for what it lacks during the day.

One final note on Waterloo St, I found it to be very anti-British/Northern Irish so just something to be aware of. I was there over the world cup and some of the bars had taken the England flag out of their world cup bunting. In addition, a lot of their songs and posters, etc. are very anti-British. I certainly wouldn't let it put you off visiting, but just be aware of it and try not to be too noticeably English, as mad as that sounds! In fairness, my visits were in July while there were riots going on so that may have influenced me and I am likely a lot more tuned into that sort of thing than you would be anyway having lived in NI all my life!

Hope you have a good trip and let me know how you get on!

The local harvester installed a claw machine next to the restaurant some time ago but it's only just kicking off with the Mums Mafia over here:

    Jennifer opens with:
Is this really necessary! In a restaurant-pub .. Harvester .....
Just watched as mums trying to win a toy for there children, time and time again.. and no wins
Just very disappointed and upset children Obviously rigged so no one can win
(she also posted a picture of the claw machine)

    Marie agrees:
Not only that, but the "prizes" are terrible. Awful soft toys that are unsuitable for little ones and bits of plastic that will be discarded 2 days later. What a waste on all levels.
I suspect it also normalize using innocuous looking machines that may give some a taste for gambling...

Natalie paints a target on her back:
Ah this bloody machine!! My son was desperate for this toy in there so we tried and tried.... Absolutely distraught lad because we had no luck.... Another parent said she had been trying for ages and spent over £30
It's such a shame ruins a nice meal

    Elaine fires a shot:
I'm sorry ... but why has this other mother spent £30 !!!!!! I'm in shock !!!
Give child £1 coin explain that's his 1 go when the money runs out it's done !! I made sure this is how my son was taught as soon as he started spotting the machines !!

    Claire hits a home run:
Maybe just say no to your kids!

    Nicola with a petition idea:
On another note maybe start a petition to harvester and get people who eat their to sign saying remove and until you do we boycott the restaurant. I think this is how supermarkets' ended up removing sweets from tills people boycotting the worst chains , mums saying we will go else where they don't have sweets at the checkouts. Then the government stepped in and banned them which sorted the last few.

Donna obviously went to school in Harrow:
These machines should be band! It’s a gambling machine for kids! And we all know gambling ruins lives!

    Sofia nearly gets it:
If your child is allergic stay clear they are just dust repositories. But they are a good life lesson for children "you cannot always win and you will probably lose most of the time and you should be ok with that" Unless you are breeding a very spoiled one you shouldn't be upset with a a child being upset himself - It's life!

Once again I need a troll FB account to point out that going in to a Harvester is much worse than giving your child money to play on these things.

Somehow I got a furry minion toy out of one of these once in Great Yarmouth and on first go. After seeing numerous failed attempts by the masses my infant son was looking at me in awe as if I was some kind of Superhero. Literally one of the top 5 moments of my lifetime. If ever he gets annoyed with me these days I still remind him of this moment a decade ago.

“There are two great days in a man’s life. The day we are born. And they day we discover why”

I had to leave the Hemel group because people were insane about dogs. One woman told me the sun achievements of my life were not on a level with a particular staff which plays in the fountain and makes her smile.

This was over a debate about dogs shitting in a sandpit for children "dogs have as much right to poo in the sand pit as children" was the consensus.

I once asked if anyone knew a recommended dog portrait painter (I don't have a dog and if I did, a photo would more than suffice). I got recommendations as far afield as the Lake District.

I'm having a really **** week. Wife in RNOH in Stanmore and still in intensive care after her op. Having to stay at my 80 year old mum's in Garston and she is driving me mad with her inane drivel. Having to juggle Mrs T as first priority, my mum and my two kids as well as its half term. Had to log on to respond to some urgent work needs (I'm not even working this week obviously) and needed a distraction so dropped into the forum for a minute or two*

So huge thanks to Diamond and the other contributors for this thread - 2o minutes later and it really has given me smile for the first time in days. Keep up the good work. Best thread in years.

(*the irony that this paragraph may sound like a facebook post is not lost on me - no need to point it out.)

After the "hold the front page" post about the frog activity on a local pond last week, someone clearly felt they needed to go one better with this post, which is in enormous lettering and enclosed in an equally generous coloured box, to make sure it's not missed. Also with the ubiquitous Facebook-friendly punctuation (although marks off for the correct non-use of an apostrophe in its):

"5.20pm and only just putting the lights on , Spring is on its way ."
