I think they were just 4 down ..

I'm going to try this from memory. I remember we lost 5-0 at Sunderland in the early eighties. Wimbledon beat us 5-0 in 1999, Fulham beat us 5-0 in 2000 but the last one eludes me. I do remember we lost 7-3 at Forest. That is only 4 goals of course, but the only time I remember Watford conceding 7 goals.

We lost 5-0 to coventry in that cup replay in the 80s under GT (after 2-2 draw at home) but i guess are just talking league games here ?

I'm suggesting why the club won't give a refund as per this thread. The fans love their football and seeing us get beaten so no need for one.

We lost 6-1 or 6-2 away to norwich before the other FA cup final ....

Yes...that's correct. It was 6-1. John Deehan scored four that day.

I remember that now. It was debuts for Steve Terry and Steve Sherwood. GT dropped Eric Steele because he was at fault for the goals in the 2-2 draw.

Terry made his debut the season before in the same game as Jackett at sunderland. Co-incidentally another of those 5-0 defeats !
Debut for steve sherwood ??? Don't think so - did you mean Jackett, if so see above.....

Maybe I got that wrong. I did say it's from memory. Sherwood and Terry were called up for the game though, and at the time they weren't regular first teamers. I attributed the heavy defeat to that, so that's what probably stayed in my memory and was confused with the Sunderland defeat.

No. It’s been highlighted in the past 24hrs why he collects them, we know.

It’s the fact that he had ample opportunity to do it away from the cameras that fans are (rightfully IMO) pee’ed off about. Regardless of the good nature of the request, it looks awful when you’ve just been beaten 8-0.

As for the ‘w*nking’ part of my original post, I thought it obvious that was a joke.

    A lot do though.
City won 11 games last season by 5 goals or more.. in 62 games (Goal difference +130) So every 5/6 matches they gave someone a tonking. Oh and their heaviest defeat in those 62 games.. 0-2 vs Chelsea.

In other news, we’ve sold out our 3000 allocation for Spurs Away in less than a day. So the fans are having the players backs...

Now seems like a decent chance for the club to say something...

How many conceded 5 on the first 18 minutes? How many ended 8-0?

Brighton played them at the Etihad a few weeks ago and lost 4-0 after also being 1-0 after 60 seconds. That seems about par for the course in the circumstances. In a season where Goal Difference might just become important to us, Saturday was an abomination in more ways than one.

Why should it matter that he didn't do his charitable work away from the camera?

And I said "fanbase", not you. If someone is aware in advance of what he does with the shirts then I struggle to think of a reason why they'd bat an eyelid at it. If they're not aware, then ultimately whose fault is that?

I don't think "**** the charity work, Ben, we just lost 8-0 so stop thinking about those leukemia sufferers and go about your business later" is a good look. People have been complaining over the last few days about the club not being as involved in the community, yet here we have a player doing his best to try and raise money for a great cause and no only do many of our fans know nothing about it, they continue to criticise him after finding out what his motivation was.

If someone didn't know Foster's MO and reacted to it because they made a bad assumption, fair enough. It happens. But anyone doing that should own that mistake and admit they got it wrong. Doubling down on criticising a guy who's just trying to raise money for a good cause is nothing short of ridiculous though.

Ironically, Foster collecting the shirts on camera has probably done more to raise awareness of what he's doing, but for the wrong reasons.

I respectfully disagree. Because for the period of time he is on the pitch, he is there to show respect to the shirt he’s wearing and the fans paying to watch him. He’s not there to collect charity donations. I have no doubts at all that he does some great stuff for the charity in question. Excellent cause. But he has plenty of channels to get traction for it.

He’s a decent guy. Shown that on a number of occasions and I’m not going to hang him out to dry for this one mis-step at all. But it was ill-judged.

Well Burton lost 9-0.. but i was answering the comment that most teams dont get "flayed by them" and pointing out a lot do.

Then I'd suggest your priorities are in the wrong place.

As someone who has watched someone in their thirties been taken by leukaemia and suffer a horrifically painful death that medication couldn't take the pain away from, I appreciate his efforts on a personal level.

Ultimately, football is a game. Leukaemia isn't.

Depends on what the OP meant by their understanding of the term in question really. Most teams outside the top few suffer a 5 or even 6-0 defeat once a season - or over a couple of seasons anyway.

I tend to see an 8-0 loss as a rather extraordinary loss that should never really be considered a possibility.

It's worth remembering that City do hand out these kind of beatings (OK, not 8) regularly. Last season they put 6 past Southampton and Chelsea and were 4-0 up at half time in both games. Am I clutching at straws?

Christ almighty, there is no need to be personal or question my priorities just because they don’t fit in with your version of the moral high ground. I’ve had family losses due to diseases so you can back up on that one. I have a young family so I’m happy with my priorities and would welcome you taking that suggestion back.

Of course football is only a game. But no fan goes to a game wondering what wonderful charitable cause will be highlighted today. I understand you feel personally affected by the cause in question. I don’t wish to make that worse with my comments. But likewise, I just don’t see the relevance in his charity work to what happened on Saturday.

Of course what he does for charity is great. But knowing how it could be perceived, I found his actions ill-judged. And his jovial post-game interview compounded that IMO.

I have no problem with your opinion. But I just think it’s unfair of you to suggest that everyone who doesn’t see it your way is wrong and should apologise.

It's not easy to work the exact numerical meaning of the word flayed no but i figured losing by 5 or more goals would be about right. They beat Schalke 7-0 in the CL so only one less than they beat us by.
Overall though yes of course losing by 8 clear goals is exceptional and needs to be addressed.

I think you're being a little unfair when you describe Foster's post-match demeanour as 'jovial'. He laughed nervously once or twice. Given what he and the team had just been through, I thought he conducted himself well.

Perhaps. But saying ‘you have to smile, what else can you do?’ - fair enough, I take it as well meaning but I would like to see some genuine anger and fury over what just happened. As I say, I’m sure he was hurting. But I wasn’t impressed with the interview that’s all.

Show the fans you care. I don’t question that they do. But I want them to show it, not just say it.

Agreed. It was just a really **** 90 minutes. We expected a heavy defeat. We got crushed. The most important thing is that the players put the game behind them rather than feeling remorseful which won't help in the long run. Likewise any official message from the club. QSF apologised after the game. Really nothing more is needed now other than QSF finding a way to get this shambolic shower to find a way of keeping the ball out of the back of the net. That was a big enough issue before the Citeh game and the damage that will have done to confidence. Picking up points in the next few games is all that matters now.

To be honest this could be a silver lining of this weekend's result.

We lost 8-1 to Palace in Division 4 on 23rd Sep 1959. We also 7-1 to them 5 years earlier - at home. A certain Jimmy Linton was in goal in 1959. You can imagine the trolling after that game over a pint of pale ale.

Interestingly we managed to finish 4th that season, and indeed got promoted. Apparently that was the first time we ever got promoted!

For avoidance of doubt no, I do not consider 5 goals to be 'flayed'. Crazily, I was mostly using it to describe losing 8-0, being beated by the second worst score in the history of the league whilst setting a record in how quickly those goals were conceded. Apart from anything else, as others have highlighted on here, and in their respective match reports, we were pretty lucky to escape with just the eight, in reality. What a wonderful sentence!
