Thanks. Someone else up at 02.20. There are cures for premature ejaculation you know ...

People seem to be mistaking 'parole' for 'probation' (or licence). In the old days a sentence over 2 years was divided into three equal periods. So in Evans' 5 year sentence 3 x 20 months. The end of the first 20 months was the PED - Parole Eligibility Date when each case was put before a parole board to determine if the convict was suitable for early release. The end of the second 20 months was the EDR - Earliest Date of Release. The title is a bit of a misnomer but it was the date automatic release was given (bar any further infringements on the inside). The remainder of the 5 year sentence was then on license (probation).

Today the EDR is after half the sentence not two thirds.

Parole IS dependant on admission of guilt, release on license is not (hence Deeney's release before half his sentence) Evans has served every day of his sentence and hasn't been released on parole. He out on license and will have to report to a probation officer until his 5 years are up.

Yep, all true - my mentioning of parole, however, was in relation to another question posed last night regarding life sentences. That would include the parole board. In Evans' case, he's now subject to probation (I referred to a PSO in a much earlier post - that's a probation services officer). Apologies if it was my posts that caused confusion.

Not when the material is of Rachel Riley it isn't.

Not your post, I know you know more about it than me - think it was Bwood's and Kelso's exchange.

Wouldn't say that! But I'll accept the compliment! :)

Yeah. But she's currently spoken for by this Pasha Kovalev geezer. My advice if you really want to make out with Rachel is to commence ballroom dancing lessons immediately, start writing in Cyrillic script and only drink vodka ...

Having read it through in its entirety now, if that is anything like a true record, which it claims to be, there is no way I'd convict as a juror, irrespective of a judge's direction as to the law ...

Neither would I. But if I heard this account being told by Evans and I didn't believe him, then I would. At the end of the day, none of us heard testimony/cross examination etc, so that website can write whatever it wants as it doesn't need to hold up in court.

Well it is a true record. The trouble is it's a true record of his opinion and interpretation of the facts.

Fair enough. Very true. And to UEA too.

I found the Twitter comments which might be related to the case particularly dubious:

I'm sure Ched will wait a while to sign a contract. After all, he'll never be in the media again to this extent after that storm dies down.

I wouldn't be surprised to see him turn up on that celeb ice skating show or maybe the diving one.

I have no sympathy for him, but the courts decided a punishment. To me the obvious solution would be to ban him until his full sentence time has passed. He only served half his 5 year sentence. T

Before somebody asks - it is not comparable to Deeney. Deeney admitted his crime but Evans is still denying.

I don't see why - we wouldn't ban someone from working in a normal job if they were released after half a sentence. The punishment is served. It's a decision for Sheff Utd now in terms of how much damage hiring him will do to their club image.

That would imply that every person who passes through the justice system is sentenced correctly?

    I don't see how/why he's still denying it.

How can he do the video he's done if he hasn't done it? "I've learnt a painful lesson" - What, the lesson that you get accused wrongly and serve time?

He's not just a rapist, he's a lying asshole too.

I don't see anything he says in that video as a confession of rape.

Just playing devils advocate, maybe he is referring to the fact that he was obviously playing away when he had a girlfriend and obviously put himself in a position where he was accused, etc.

It's indirect discrimination to not employ someone based on a criminal record unless the nature of the job either relates to the conviction (theft conviction vs fraud job) or the job involved contact with vulnerable people, children, young adults etc.

Him being a footballer does not strike me as him posing risk.

Plus, he'll be proven innocent soon anyway.

I don't understand the problem to be honest. People shouldn't be angry at the guy trying to find a job. They should be angry at the sentencing if they don't think he should be in society after 2.5 years. If he genuinely thinks he is innocent I don't see why he should show remorse while the appeal is ongoing just to appease people. Again if people have a problem with that they should be angry with the sentencing system, which has let him out after half a sentence even though he doesn't think he has anything to say sorry for.

Sheff Utd are scapegoats for people's frustration at the justice system. It should make no difference if he is a footballer or working in a supermarket.

  33. Shakespearo

    Shakespearo Reservist

And Ched Evans - having been convicted - is now a scapegoat for the frustration at all the rapes that go unpunished.

  34. PhilippineOrn

I guess most decent minded people find rape a particularly abhorrent crime. Even if he was to look for work in a supermarket, if everybody who shopped there knew he was a rapist there would be a similar backlash.
