Championship Players

I am starting to feel quite confident that we might win promotion, so I have been thinking about how we will go about rebuilding for the Premier league.

First of all I reckon that if we get promoted we will not have to lose any players that we don't want to, which should mean we will retain the services of the likes of Sarr, Pedro, Kiko, Hughes, Serrialta, Chalobah and anyone else we want to. Hopefully we should also be able to offload everyone we don't want too or at least pay some of them off, mentioning no names.

IMO as we have spent a season in The Championship we now have a better knowledge of the players from fellow Championship teams who could have what it takes to make the step up to the PL. Therefore this is where I would be looking to recruit the bulk of our new recruits from, along with the best of the players who end up getting relegated from the PL.

What players do you think we could possibly realistically hope to bring in from that player pool.

Was thinking this. It would never happen with pozzo as the championship clubs price their assets out of a move.

    To entertain the thought.

    Armstrong Blackburn

Excuse spellings also if Fulham drop and Chelsea were to let loftus cheeck go I’d like to see a move for him.

I was thinking that it might be to soon myself, but it would be interesting to see what players you lot might like to go for when we do it. I appreciate it could change depending on who goes up with us and on who comes down, but what the hell lets just speculate anyway.

We will get Czeknico from the Russian league; Porina from the Mexican league, McNotfermi from the Australian league; and anyone who can let go of their zimmer frame for more that 30 seconds. They will replace Sarr, Joao Pedro and Serrialta who will all be sold to middling EPL teams.

O’Hare and Mowatt I feel are players we could plausibly get if we don’t go up. Not crazy about Sibley, hasn’t pulled up too many trees this season after excelling last season but definitely got some talent.

If we do go up, I’d want to see us sign a LB, a CM (maybe two and maybe someone who can sit so Hughes could play further forward), a left winger and a striker.
LB: Rico Henry at Brentford is the best LB in the league. Good age too. 2y left on his contract. Callum Styles looks good, although more of a WB. Wouldn’t feel too comfortable throwing him in against Prem attackers

CM: Mowatt (0n a free); Olise and Ejaria at Reading; DaSilva at Brentford (though he’s almost certainly out of our price range even if we go up and they do not); Lerma and Billing at Bournemouth (both sh*thouses yes but pretty decent players). Dewsbury-Hall at L*ton (on loan from Leicester). Matt Grimes (supposedly of interest last summer, and only 1 year left on his contract).

Left winger: Jed Wallace at Millwall and Arnaut Danjuma at Bournemouth. Ilias Chair sometimes plays out wide and sometimes in the middle - would be a decent option but not of the same calibre as Wallace and Danjuma.

Striker: I don’t think there are any strikers in the league likely to be reasonably priced this summer and going to guarantee goals at Premier League level. Toney will go to a top half-side if Brentford don’t go up for £30-40m. Blackburn are supposedly looking for £25m which is preposterous as a) they look a better side without him b) he has one year left on his contract and c) I think he’s too small to have the hold up play necessary for a non-possession based side which were likely to be should gain promotion. Lucas Joao is maybe a more compelling option stylistically but his injury record isn’t great and he’ll be 28 in September so won’t have much resale value. I wouldn’t look to the Championship for the new striker we’ll need to sign if we do get promoted; there’ll be better options elsewhere.

It looks like we wouldn’t need a CB (or if so they’d need to be a substantial upgrade the likes of which aren’t around in the Championship) which in some is unfortunate as there are many good and affordable CBs in the league. Andersen and Helik at Barnsley, young Souttar and Collins at Stoke, Clarke at Brighton/Derby and big Jake Cooper at Millwall (those latter two are both left footed), and Dael Fry, who might be the best of the lot.

Dieng would also be an upgrade for us in goal.

Edit: Dike at Barnsley has hit the ground running. Would supposedly be pretty expensive to buy from Orlando City and the sample size is a bit small but still looks very decent

According to my Fulham supporting mate RLC earns £150k per week, so I’d say there are two hopes of that happening.

  11. If promoted...

I would offload Gray and Deeney
I would buy Toney and Rico Henry (if Brentford aren't promoted) they will probably want something like £30M for the pair and I think its worth paying
Then I would pay whatever necessary to get Deulofeu back (use some of the Gray Deeney wages)
Finally I would bring Coucho in
    That would do for me

  12. LeedsOrn

Toney and Henry together will definitely be more than £30m. Toney seems a much better all round player than Watkins who Brentford sold for over £30m to Villa last summer. Combined you’re probably looking at at least £50m.

Would love GD back but there was a lot of talk that he wanted to return and live in Italy or Spain for personal reasons; I don’t think it’s just a question of raising cash (and of course, internal transfers like that wouldn’t be too difficult).

  13. Then I’d pass on Toney and take Henry. And if he’s priced too high I’d go hunting elsewhere. A top full back can be had for >£10m.

Ref GD it depends if and who comes in for him.

Pretty certain all the talk was GD wanted to leave even if we weren't relegated, so I doubt he'd even consider coming back to us.

Best to talk about this in May if we have been promoted. There is still a long way to go. There are options in many nations, Benelux, Switzerland, Spain, Italy, Czechia and South America. Very decent players for not OTT prices although I would like to see us pick up some rough gems from the pyramid. But best not to discuss this when there is still a while to go before the finish line. We would not want to show hubris else mother Nemesis might be on the horizon.

Maybe we can talk about this in more superstition-friendly terms than those set out by TVOR: Who in the Championship do we think would be a good (and affordable) signing for a bottom half prem side?
Toney and Buendia are the best players in the league but probably beyond the budget of a bottom half side unless they choose to spend abnormally this summer. But I would say the many of the players I listed earlier would be a good fit for almost any bottom half premier league side. Olise and Dieng have very high ceilings in my view.

Wow. Wonder if Chelsea are still paying a good portion of that ? Watford could sell themselves to a player like that. Shop window, play regular, move on if and when a so called big club make the offer

Apparently they’re only paying a portion, due to his huge wages, as Chelsea normally insist the loaning club pay the lot but in his case no club would:

    https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www....ftus-cheek-chelsea-fc-wages-a4565276.html?amp

As an aside there are quite a few articles that confirm £150k but this one says £120k:

    https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/trib...oal-chelsea-double-the-salary-of-loftuscheek/

It says he’s in a five year deal so that’s £30m+ which is just mind blowing/depressing for such an extremely average player

Once again, I am NOT getting ahead of myself, but...if we go up, I think we can keep Hughes, and I'm sure we'd be able to keep JP (in fact he might be best off staying in the Championship). Sarr is the only one I don't know about, but at least if we do go up, we get a proper sum for him

I don't see teams going in for JP yet. He's had one decent season in the Championship. Our price tag will be prohibitively high. If we're promoted I think teams would rather see how he does in a top league before splashing the cash.

The Pedro situation might be very similar to that with Ashley Young back in 2006. He had a great first full season in the Championship when we were promoted, then had half a season in the PL for the bigger clubs to have a look at him before Villa came in with their offer. Whether we would take such an offer this time is debatable.

I assumed this thread (as usual no clue in the title) would be about which of our players we can flog, to whom and for how much at the end of the season to reduce our debt. For example could we convince Brentford to take Hughes, and would we be able to recoup the £5m we paid for him.
Instead I see we can pick up Toney & Henry for £30m combined. I think they would fit well with Son if we could pick him up for about £7m, all financed by selling Sarr to Liverpool or Utd for £80m.

Depends how much Brentford are hurting for cash post-Covid and how devastated transfer values continue to be, I suppose.

I expect this summers transfer dealings to be similarly muted to those of the last summer, possibly even more so (market in general, not us specifically). As with us and Suarez/Estupinan, if Brentford need to offload and we (or someone else) are the only suitor, they might not have an option.

I agree that in the aggregate the market will be muted. But Brentford are a very-well run club and don't sell on the cheap. They sold Watkins for over 30m last summer (amid similar Covid uncertainty and decline in transfer activity) and Benrahma's loan with an obligation to buy will net a similar amount (despite concerns about his medical). Toney has quite clearly outperformed both so should secure that 30m+, at a minimum, on his own. Henry, in my view, is the only outstanding LB in the league (unlike RB where there are four or five really good RBs) - so Premier League clubs wanting an EFL LB will have to fight for him should they want a premier league quality LB from the championship.

In all honesty it's difficult to know how we will approach the window if promoted. A few in my list that will be out of our price range I believe.

That was over a year ago, though - an additional year of lost gate receipts is going to add a lot of additional strain, and that strain is echoed in the vast majority other clubs. This will naturally depress transfer fees because no one can afford to pay them and everyone has to offload to meet the bills.

Brentford are a very well run club, but they've forked out for a new stadium so they need the money in player sales. Their stars will surely be off if they don't go up, but you'd think there'd be bigger clubs than us sniffing around whatever league we're in!

Can't wait for Brentford to lose the play-off final, sell Toney for £30m, buy an 18 year old lad from non-League Danish football who goes on to score 40 goals only to agonisingly miss out again
