"Clarke Carlisle is undergoing medicatation and rehabilitation after suffering from myostitis ossificans - the ossification of muscle in his thigh. It is hoped that he will be back in training before Christmas."

What an earth is "myostitis ossificans"???

Basically it means when the bone forms within the muscle, very common in the mid thigh area and is a deep tissue bleeding! Nasty injury and very common in footballers!

    What is Myositis Ossificans?

If you have a bad muscle strain or contusion (dead leg!) and it is neglected then you could be unlucky enough to get Myositis Ossificans. It is usually as a result of impact which causes damage to the sheath that surrounds a bone (periostium) as well as to the muscle. Bone will grow within the muscle (called calcification) which is painful. The bone will grow 2 to 4 weeks after the injury and be mature bone within 3 to 6 months.

    What causes myositis ossificans?

Not applying R.I.C.E. (rest, ice, compression and elevation) immediately after the injury.
Having intensive physiotherapy or massage too soon after the injury. Use someone who is properly qualified and insured.
Returning too soon to training after exercise.

There was a pretty long report from the physio explaining it on the main site in the last week. Should explain everything you wanna know.

My fiancee is a nurse and has explained it too me that it can be a very serious condition and if not caught early enough can develope in a bad way whereby any muscle damage will result in the healing muscle turning to bone.
So long as this has been found and treated quickly, which it appears to have been, then it should be ok for his long term future, if not it could mean he would have to sooner rather than later end his career.
There are some good drugs out there that can help this condition and if treatment was fast then there should be no problem in the future.
All we can do is hope and wish him luck.
From what was said on the club site from the physio it appears that this has been found very early and treatment has commenced so the prognosis is very good

EDIT: Myositis ossificans circumscripta can develop either in response to soft tissue injury (eg, blunt trauma, stab wound, fracture/dislocation, surgical incision) or can occur without known injury. Proposed mechanisms for atraumatic myositis ossificans include nondocumented trauma, repeated small mechanical injuries, and nonmechanical injuries caused by ischemia or inflammation.

Thanks people, just what we needed.

For everyone reading this, the above quote by Jobr wasn't the only potentially libelous one, (others were edited out by my mods last night). These are exactly what could cause this forum to go the way of the officials. None of us can afford to be sued, or is willing to take the risk. I'd rather close down than lose the roof over my and my family's head. It states on the registration agreement that all opinions expressed are the individuals, but if I'm providing the platform for those views then I'm at risk too. You think we can't be sued or get into serious trouble? You're very wrong.

Whilst free speech and an internet forum go hand in hand, it's our responsibility to clean up our act after what happened to the main boards just 4 DAYS AGO. As I very clearly stated in the forum newsletter, we're being very tight at the beginning because we have to send a message to everyone, including the club who will no doubt have seen this. Rumours are one thing, re-enforcing comments made and viewed by everyone on the club boards that could be very damaging are another.

The above quote, (and others that were edited out), also put my new and in training moderators in a very bad position last night, (I actually got away from the screen for a few hours). It was not appreciated by me one iota.

Finally, and I've said it a hundred times since Wednesday, we are not the official boards. Our No.1 goal is the support of Watford FC and to build a strong community that can enjoy being here without the fear of attack and intimidation. If that means there will be pain to reach those goals then pain it will be. Remember, Admin will ALWAYS have the last word.
