A good post proudlad and some good points have been made but I am curious to know why in your opinion has our style of play "damaged" football?

As UEA said, its how we play and if we changed it we would get slaughtered every week. Sure if we had Fabregas in the middle of the park then maybe we could change it, but we have Gavin Mahon and he isn't exactly the most technically gifted footballer in the world.

Just a couple of facts for your attention:

1) Watford squad put together for around 5 million quid
2) Chelsea squad assembled for around 180 million squid

After watching the 'Big Clash' of the premier season so far, yesterday, I can see no difference in the style of play that Chelsea have adopted to ours...

Yes I know each and everyone of those players could be lifted out of the Chelsea team and dropped into any team in Europe and then play whatever formation or style that was required from them by their manager, because individually they are very skilful and have great technical ability....

But under Jose, they play the way Jose wants them to play, and that is direct long balls to the battering ram that is Drogba!!

 

Oh we're back on that then are we? Okay, back in to character...

Well, how come then that Reading, Norwich, West Ham, Crystal Palace and even Barnsley have all played proper football in the Premiership, despite having similar set-ups to Watford? Granted Reading have a team that has spent longer together than Watford, but they endured several years of missing out on the play-offs and promotion, yet they never resorted to kick and rush as a tactic to bring about short-term success at the expense of entertainment.

You may talk about Gavin Mahon, but I've read numerous posts saying that he has been your best player, so presumably you are quite happy for him to stay in the team even if his style prevents proper football being played. Nobody is saying you should be able to match Arsenal for footballing skill and quality, but the examples above show that there is still room for a modicum of ability allied to endeavour and sweat.

 

Isn't it the winning that counts? I'd prefer to play 'long-ball' and end up with promotion and fantastic days out like cardiff, rather than go to looscum way, play supposedly 'attractive' football and lose 6 on the bounce.

Tough choice i guess!

But to call our style of football damaging is pretty short-sighted in my opinion, as mentioned before, we're playing to our strengths, which happen to be a quick and direct approach due to the players we have. If we tried to play sexy football we'd be beaten before we started, just look at the Vialli era!

3 of those teams were relegated at the first time of asking. It hardly helps your point that a majority have been relegated.

 

Perhaps not, but Watford will also be relegated. The point is that no one will miss them, whereas those other teams were respected and would be welcomed back.

Bolton play, and have always played, the same style at Watford do now. Don't forget they clawed their way into the Premiership and have slowly but surely fought their way up the table. I see no difference between their style and Watford's. You may also have not noticed but erm...we don't care if people are going to 'miss' us or not! That's not why WFC are here and that's not why I support them. We're far from relegated anyway.

 

Do you think we care if we are missed? It doesn't bother me in the slightest if the other teams in the Premiership dislike us or how we play. At then end of the day, if we stay up then great and we if we go down then we go down with a healthy bank balance and a promising future to look forward to

 

LBH, I have no response other than to say you're absolutely right.

However, since Chelsea hardly have any English players in their team it's by the by how they see fit to play. Chelsea will not provide young players to England, but Watford just might. However, since Watford choose to play the way they do, the point is how poorly developed are those players going to be to play internatrional football if their game is based solely around kicking the ball the length of the pitch and running after it?

You have missed the point... we were not talking about international football, we were talking about the premier league, and from what i saw yesterday from old trafford, Chelsea are playing (albeit with higher pedigree players) LONG DIRECT BALLS INTO DROGBA!! End of... and they are 2nd in League!!

Portsmouth, Reading, Sheffield United, Man City, Blackburn, Fulham = All current Premiership clubs of a similar size to Watford in respect to recent history (ie all have been in lower divisons in the last decade). How many England players do they provide?

The referee was poor and helped you, you have no reason to complain about timewasting, as you won.
