Since it seems that apologising for past atrocities is currently a la mode, when will messers Taylor and Boothroyd be apologising to all football lovers for the damage their brand of 'football' has done to the English game?

 

What damage have they done?

Apart from playing the watford way which is attacking direct football?

Isn't the idea of football to score more goals than the opposing team?
Whats wrong with getting the ball down to the oppenents end as quick as you can and scoring?
Would you rather see goals and goal mouth action or a bunch of pretty boys passing it to each other in the middle of the park going backwards more than they go forward.

 

Explain this damage please.

Indeed, now as I was saying;

It can be no coincidence that Watford has failed to provide any players to the England teams during the Taylor or Boothroyd eras now can it?

Granted, John Barnes made it into the England team, but his constant failures to live up to his supposed talent are surely down to the fact that all natural footballing ability was strangled out of him and replaced by the requirement to simply chase lost causes and run around like a wild dog for 90 minutes. The knowledge that any ability to control or pass a ball would be redundant in the Taylor era meant that these skills remained dormant throughout his subsequent England career.

Happily, Liverpool managed to draw some of it out and he had a fine career as one of English football's most exciting and watchable players. All the greater sadness that Watford's style of blunderbuss football meant that a glass ceiling was put on his rise to greatness.

To suggest that Boothroyd employs this style becase it makes Watford successful might have some creedence if Watford ever won, but they don't. A few dodgy draws and 6 defeats hardly justifies the appaling sight of professional footballers who control a ball as far as they can pass it. On top of this we can add the deliberate timewasting tactics that they now see fit to employ in order to frustrate superior opposition teams and crowds (to little ultimate effect, as evidenced in the deserved defeat at Portsmouth) and the only logical and reasoned conclusion that one can draw is that the Premier League and English football in general, will be well shot of Watford come the end of the season.

 

To be honest given the current sham of an England setup I'm glad Mclaren isn't picking any Watford players. But we've got one to watch in the U21's at the moment so you never know. Not sure about John Barnes, maybe some of the 'less young' guys on here should smash that one to bits.

To say that Boothroyd hasn't been sucessful though is just plain stupid. He employs a tactic which has seen a team go from relegation candidates in the Championship to a Premiership place in 16 months. How can you argue with that? At the moment we play a brand of football that suits our players - granted they're on the whole not the most skillful bunch in the world but that's to be expected given our quick rise. Reading are the only team to play silky football and get out of the Championship in the last few seasons, the rest have had to slog their way out. Have you seen Sheff Utd play? They're exactly the same. The fact is given half a chance I'd love to see us play slightly more attractive football, but if we tried it at the moment we'd get slaughtered so what's the point?

I don't have a clue what you're on about when you mention time wasting. We do it no more than any other team. If you're referring to the Pompey game, two substitutions due to injuries suggests we were definitely not wasting time.

John Barnes chasing hopless balls? Did you ever watch any Watford games in the Eighties?

John Barnes was a winger we would pass the ball to him, for him to go down the wing and put in a deadly cross for our strikers. He was known for his skills hence why Liverpool came in for him. Also he was noted to have the fastest left foot in the game at the time for the amount of crosses he got in when the ball looked like it would run out of play.

Currently we've got the Future England Goalkeeper, Ashley Young who plays for England U21's, so the futures bright at the moment.

Well what's the point of that?

Obviously they'll all vote to ban me, since they can't hold a grown up conversation and just resort to playground insults.

I asked a provocative question and stated my case. One or two have tried to answer it, others have resorted to childishness. Perhaps you should consider whether you want a lively and vibrant board where people are challenged to debate in an erudite and informed way, or whether you just want a board with dozens of posts about how many tickets Watford have sold for the next away game on a daily basis (the answer always being not many of course).

I don't think he should be banned. I do think though that he shouldn't run trolls (the work excuse is weak) and should actually come out and admit his side of things - ie who he supports. I like a good debate as much as anyone, but not knowing where he's coming from just makes it seem like a rather poor typical attack on Watford, which we could all do without.

 

There is plenty of lively debate on here but what you are trying to do in my opinion is to infuriate people in the view of starting a thread aimed at degrading the board as a whole.
This is not what I want to see at all, thats precisely the reason that so many arguments and insulting threads were started on the official boards and we are trying to rise above that.

Whether you believe me or not is irrelevent. The fact is each time I surf away from the site and then come back to it, it has logged me out and then logs me back in as Boothy (who is indeed a troll, as I've already mentioned, albeit a weak one compared to me).

Irrespective of this, the question remains. The only reason there is friction is that some of you are not able to react to a post without acting like small children. It's ironic that the youngest respondents are the ones who are able to cope and the two most vocal about banning are man in their 30's and 40's, who should be able to rise above such things and provide a witty, pithy or even factually accurate comeback.

 

To be honest I found it quite funny, he is right, he was starting a discussion, he stated his case, with out swearing. It is up to us to prove him wrong with facts and figures, not by name calling.


These boards are a forum for discussion and all views are welcome (unless they're are racist, sexist etc), it is unlikely that we will all agree and in fact it would be boring if we did. Therefore I say don't ban him unless he starts to become offensive.

 

The flaw in that is that the cookies would automatically log you back in if you set it to remember you and if it was set to remember him then when you log out of his name and itno yours the cookies would be reset therefore it wouldnt remember him.

 

I agree don't ban him, we shouldn't raise to the name calling but Proudlad is also guilty of that too.

We should be able to put together a decent discussion stong enough to dispell proudlads comments.

 

I've not a clue who you are. I dunno how often you were about on the main boards, the name rings a bell but I was offline for all of September due to moving to France so missed quite a few bits and pieces. I've also been on quite a lot less than in the past in recent weeks, though since the Fans Forum I've been sucked back in. So no, I don't have a clue.

And the only reason there is friction is obviously because of your past rep. You openly attack Watford on a Watford message board with the same old clap trap the media are spewing out, you've not replied to any of the real replies you've had so far (except to belittle Luther Blisset's England record) and you expect people to be nice to you. Ho hum.
