The biggest issue is that if we were going to loan someone in, surely we'd want to bring someone in who is likely to make an impact in the starting 11 to help avoid relegation. Not a back-up for the back-up CH.

Not really an upgrade just another body in the squad in case of injuries, and suspensions in Kabasele's case.

Is this guy going to be the new Danny Cullip?

Yes. A loaned "upgrade" rather than a "body" would have been good......

Let's all hammer the guy before he has actually kicked a ball for us. He was highly rated for a reason. Pearson was a very decent centreback so he clearly has known the qualities he has and thinks he can bring him back to what he was. He might not be match fit or sharp but it won't be he's been sitting on the couch without physical preparation.

Sometimes things do not work out for a player at a club for whatever reason. Dyche brought him to Burnley with the intention of him being a first choice but settled upon his current set up which has been fairly unchanged and he has been unable to break in. He is not happy and Burnley are looking apparently at Dael Fry so need to free up wages and money to fund a transfer considering they also do not spend prolifically in the market. It's logical for them to allow him to go and Dyche has probably spoken to Gibson and told him what a great club we are as despite his sacking he still talks fondly about the club.

All needless negativity once again. If we can get rid of Prodl soon that would be a bonus another drain on resources without contributing anything over the last two seasons.

It seems that he is being written off before he even joins. I get that he hasn't played much and when he has Burnley haven't done well but I assume that Burnley fielded 11 players and the defeats were not solely down to Gibson. By the same analysis if Quina went to another club his record of appearing mainly in cup defeats mean he is a bad player?

I would also say that Pearson has already improved a few defenders at the club (in particular Kiko) so I welcome this new signing if it happens and hope that he can be a leader at the back.

I suspect we won’t get Gibson if Dyche wants Dael Fry as his replacement.

Given that Boro’ already want Gibson on loan, I doubt they’d sell Fry and watch Gibson go elsewhere.

If Burnley want Dael Fry, there’s surely a swap deal in there for them.

I think people are just stating the facts ? He’s barely played and been subbed when he has. He was a great prospect 2 years ago and may turn out to be a great signing longer term but I doubt he will be seen as an immediate first team player for the next 3 months.

  11. The undeniable truth

The undeniable truth First Team Captain

No, but i guess not all 11 were substituted ?
No but the fact he wasn't trusted in the prem and if he was subbed in the games he played in the cup might call into question whether he would be worthy of a starting place in the prem ?

If we are all for signing former Championship level great prospects, we should also consider their striker Matej Vydra. Did a great job for Derby a few years back.

Not sure if we've discussed him at all on here at all.

Stop hammering him before he's even kicked a ball for us. He was a great prospect for a reason.

You may be proved right but lets see what happens as and when he appears. I think that Cathcart was met with similar antipathy when he signed from Blackpool but I don't think there are many now who wouldn't call his signing a success.

Yes he was albeit for very different reasons. He'd been playing regularly and well at the level we bought him to play at. The apathy was based on his performances years before.
I'm just disapppointed that the window is about to close with no additions to the starting XI given we are 2nd bottom in the prem. I don't think Gibson, great signing he may eventually turn out to be, is a player to come straight into the first team and improve team performance in the way a quality RB, CD or striker on loan would have done. We are strengthening less than those around us in the table.

He looked like he was going to become a very good player and was called up by Southgate not too long ago before going to Burnley.

I don't disagree that we need strengthening in other areas as well but January is such a tough window to get the necessary quality. It may appear that teams around us are improving their squads but I am not sure they are or that throwing large sums at this stage of the season is the correct move despite our precarious position. The current first team squad were on a good run before the Villa result but I don't think a knee jerk reaction to one poor result means we need to bring in several new players at a hefty cost.

We know that we have some decent players but injuries to key players will hurt us. I don't think "throwing the kitchen sink" at staying up is the correct approach either as it may cause friction in what currently appears a relatively harmonious squad.

I think its partly because Burnley have experienced and trusted central defenders, Tarkowski is decent and Ben Mee is their captain. Both good centre backs in my opinion.

Agreed but we've not even thrown in a couple of tea towels let alone a sink.

When Gibson and then Maguire were sold first time to Leicester and Burnley I thought that Gibson had the better potential and was surprised he didn't go to a more favourable team (perceived) and that has been borne out by history so far.

Lastly, the club are not panicking and are continuing to bring in value for money buys that will grow with the team and that suddenly isn't going to change. If this deal comes about then it will be with an option to buy which means that if we did go down we would not have to keep him. Such a deal works for all parties.

Let’s hold fire a bit on praising the club for bringing in ‘value for money’ buys. While I agree with the broader points in your post, the club have shown time and time again that a lot of our signings are more ‘hit and hope’ than value for money.

Apparently we're still looking into this, but Burnley aren't happy with the loan with option to buy arrangement. Good competition for Teddy Perkins imo

Few Burnley folk on Twitter saying Burnley have slashed the asking price to £8m. Want to get his wages off the wage-bill and recoup the money they spent on Brownhill yesterday.

This is more inline with the figure I expect Watford would be interested in. For whatever reason, (and that is a concern why that is), it didn't work out for Gibson at Burnley. It was a strange signing for them at the time as they had Tarkowski, Mee and Long. Why would they spend a club record fee on Gibson, a position they hardly needed to spend big on. But I suppose they did that also when they signed Joe Hart. They already had Heaton and Pope at the club, so it was strange they signed Hart as well. It seemed like overkill to me at the time, and I think that's panned out to be the case. They didn't need Gibson, even when they signed him.

For this to work for Watford, we take him on loan, pay all this wages which is fair enough, then have an 'option' to sign for £8m, not an 'obligation'. This seems sensible. We may get a player who can recover his Middlesbrough form and it's a good deal for us, or we find out first hand why Burnley wanted rid, then of course we do not follow up our interest.

This saga for a player from Burnley is depressing...it's not like we're trying to sign Sergio Aguero or Mo Salah...which I could understand...it's fecking Ben Gibson...a fringe player who I'm not convinced is worth the pursuit.

This is the 'highlight' of this transfer window...even more depressing.

Thing is, from what journalists on Twitter are saying, a loan deal doesn’t fly for Burnley as it stands. They want to sell. They will only loan him if they get a replacement in.

Ah well. Bad luck Giraldi and Gino, they did their best. Pushed and pushed to strengthen but if the other team doesn't want to sell their best player there's not much more you can do. Never mind.

  34. hornetgags

Not having a go at you, but that doesn't make any sense. If they sell him to us, unlikely they'll get a replacement by the time the window slams shut, so loaning is no different.

I can see the sales pitch now: "As you know Ben Gibson has left and we want you as a replacement. We want you to join Burnley, as a squad player. You'll likely sit on the bench or not be included in the matchday squad. Interested?"

In an idea world, yes, get a replacement in, but I don't see that has any real merit in stopping this deal. They've not relied on Gibson in all his time at the club. He didn't even get into the side as soon as he signed, which is really unusual, although he did get an injury after about a month of joining.

So, in reality, seeing as they've never relied on him as a player for them, do they really need a replacement urgently?
