The Final Frontier: Becks in LA

I get drunk with most of the guys mentioned and pictured in this article.
Of course not the Chivas fans...they aren't actually people.

Ha ha! Good week for me footballing-wise.
Wish I could have seen Stewart score in person like I saw Beckham nail that one in.

I've been passively distant about him being on the Galaxy, but now I'm considering having his children.

EDIT: I'm still drunk on Guinness and victory. I gotta go to bed.

I can tell you it was absolutely electric to see in person the Beck's free kick come together:
    -the whistle
-the ref points to the spot
-you realize with excitement that Beckham will take it and not the well meaning but terrible free kick artist known as Donovan
-Becks jogs over and picks up the ball
    -DC United forms the wall
-the Galaxy fan out about the pitch
-I imagined in my mind what I think I should see: a bending kick around the wall into the upper V with the keeper totally fooled, but quickly shake it off because it usually just gets wrapped up by the keeper, bounces off the wall, goes high, goes wide, or something random...
    -Becks steps over the ball
-The Riot Squad roar in anticipation, and 25,000 more hand sitters stand up and roar as well
    -Becks kicks
-It's a bending kick around the wall into the upper V with the keeper totally fooled.
-Absolutely exactly as I'd imagined it!
    -Pandemonium reigns

    feel the love...
The Chivas/Galaxy game was a debacle with all the International travel and the poor team chemistry for the Galaxy. The G's lost 3:0, but the atmosphere was great. The Riot Squad hired a Mariachi band and doffed sombreros to celebrate the faux Mexican flavor of our opponents team.
Very enjoyable and I'm still recovering from the last of the free beer Landon Donovan bought for us.

    The other shoe has fallen...
Galaxy have lost 5 straight MLS games, 3 with David 'KinTama' Beckham on the field.

Except for the Superliga Final Wednesday night, the end is at hand for the Galaxy, even though there are two months left in the season. We don't have Promotion/Relegation, but instead the top 8 teams in the league are invited to a post season tournament, the MLS playoffs. Unless we win every game from here out and some other teams lose most all the games, the Galaxy will not make it to the playoffs.

    The Debacle

It is a pretty amazing story of idiotic planning, none of it Beck's fault.

    the superliga final? in america?!

  18. Fitz

    Fitz Squad Player

Yes we are bilingual here, hence the 'liga'... Anyway, I should have put it in air quotes...y'know, "Superliga".

We have little small dreams, don't we? Hey, not everyone can live in England.

In all seriousness, it's been a great tournament, pitting the top four Mexican Football teams against a seemingly random selection of MLS teams that people may actually have heard of. It has the air of the US/Mex matches.

I assume the 'super' doesn't mean 'above all others', but simply above the the two leagues.

Eventually, I hope it gets expanded and turns into a North American & Pacific Rim kind of Champions League-y thing.

Again, not everyone can be born English, and the rest of us have to start somewhere.

They seem to report on Galaxy matches on SSN every two days. YOu must have played about 9 or 10 games in the time we've played 4!

I don't fancy Watford-legend Frank Yallop to last much longer in his job.

  20. Fitz

    Fitz Squad Player

It's ridiculous, the way theu've back loaded the calendar so that we have 2-3 games a week since Beckham reported...so stupid.

It's a shame about Yallop, I think you are right.

On the other hand, if the Klinsy rumors are true, it will make a lot of folks happy. He was rumored to be in the running at the time Yallop was hired, as he'd been a technical advisor with the club for a while at that point. He was on his way to Germany then though.

    Interesting as it maybe...

But I don't think we will get anywhere this season unless he drops Mahon as captain!!

Looks like Coach Yallop is just about out the door. There was a team meeting today that kept a few players away from prior scheduled interviews, which is very unusual here. The word is Frank Yallop is out...

Looks like we are trading this cerebral emotionless intelligent Watford born former Ipswich defender...

The latest fashion accessory appears to be a Beckham 23 Galaxy home shirt. I saw three people on Monday wandering around with them on. And they're sold out basically everywhere on the net, unless you want XXXL size. Crazy!

I just had a birthday Monday (41 years, ONLY 9 MORE UNTIL I'M 50!!!!) and my wife gave me a white Galaxy shirt, no player name/number. I'll probably get Abel Xavier's name on it. Maybe Cobi Jones. I admit, Beckham has been fantastic for us, but I just can't get a shirt with his name on it.

Galaxy take the CONCACAF club champions Pachuca to penalties, lose.
Beckham does his knee in around the 33' mark, done for the season apparently. He needs to learn how Mexican's play the game, because he looked like a fool going into that tackle, to be honest.

Most surprising thing of all is Donovan, renowned for his penalty taking consistency, BLEW A GAME WINNING PK. Un-fricking-believable.

Pachica is a very entertaining side, and play an attractive style, and have classy players. I rarely say that about Mexican football in any way, but I don't mind in this case because it is true.

    Link to game report.

There was a $1,000,000 prize pot to be won here, and many of the Galaxy players make less than $50,000 annually, a few starters less than $20,000, so you better believe they wanted to win last night and possibly double their earnings.

Also check out Frank Yallop's post game presser. (Warning: our 'unemotional' Watford-born coach let's the f-bombs fly...)

OK, I know many of you couldn't care less about the odyssey of David Beckham out to the Galaxy. Feel free to not read any further.

Since I last posted here on the topic, Beckham has been hurt in two ways, which I'm sure you are aware of, but is on the verge of returning to the Galaxy now.

In the meantime, the Galaxy have suffered through a rash of injuries to other key players, the ramifications of trades not well suited to a team without Beckham's playmaking skill, miserable team chemistry, national team callups and a schedule having the G's play twice a week for several months (designed to play as many games as possible AFTER Beckham started with the team) all resulting in the Galaxy seeing their status tumble from 'hopeful' to 'bottom of the ladder'.

Finally, after the trades were done, and the coach had the opportunity to gel with the players, team chemistry has returned and the G's have managed to put together a 5 game win streak, and 6 game unbeaten streak.

What this means is the Galaxy have the opportunity to go to the 'playoffs' if they win all the rest of their games, despite being apparently out of it for nearly two months. As you may know the MLS does not have Promotion/Relegation, but instead we play a post-season tournament for the MLS Cup. The top 8 teams are invited to play, and the rest are done until next season. Not making the MLS playoffs is akin to relegation in other leagues.

Anyway, New York is up on Thursday, and if we win, the final game of the season will be a do or die for both teams as LA goes to Chicago to play them for the final Playoff spot. If LA wins both games, they are in the playoffs, and if LA loses either game, most likely Chicago will take the last spot of the playoffs. So next weekend looks to the capper on a very important week for the Galaxy, and David Beckham returning can only help.

Surely it woulld be better to finish bottom than on place beneath playoffs? For SuperDraft purposes. This surely provides a team with reason to stop trying whilst out of it?
