BEFORE the season started, there was a great deal of debate amongst Hornets fans about what would be the most anticipated fixture.

    Emirates Stadium
    The Emirates Stadium

The early clash at home to Manchester United perhaps or Liverpool away with its memories of Tommy Mooney's heroics of seven years ago.

Perhaps Newcastle away for the majestic St James' Park but it's probably true to say that next week's first ever trip to Arsenal's new Emirates Stadium is the one that's most caught the imagination.

The speed with which our allocation of 3000 tickets sold out on Tuesday is evidence of the Hornets' faithful's excitement for Saturday's clash - because we'll hardly have an easier match this season!

Looking through the record books, Watford have a better league record against Arsenal than any other team they will face this season with eight wins in 14 league encounters.

Indeed, the Gunners are one of only four clubs who Watford have beaten more often than lost to, as this table shows:

Watford's record v current Premier League Clubs

    Opponents Total
    P W D L Pts PPG
    Arsenal 14 8 1 5 25 1.79
    Aston Villa 15 5 5 5 20 1.33
    Blackburn 24 8 8 8 32 1.33
    Bolton 19 9 4 6 31 1.63
    Charlton 52 14 18 20 60 1.15
    Chelsea 18 8 3 7 27 1.5
    Everton 15 2 1 12 7 0.47
    Fulham 17 5 4 8 19 1.12
    Liverpool 14 3 1 10 10 0.71
    Man City 10 5 1 4 16 1.6
    Man United 15 2 4 9 10 0.67
    Middlesbrough 20 7 4 9 25 1.25
    Newcastle 24 6 9 9 27 1.13
    Portsmouth 42 14 11 17 53 1.26
    Reading 86 34 16 36 118 1.37
    Sheff Utd 24 7 8 9 29 1.21
    Tottenham 14 5 2 7 17 1.21
    West Ham 29 4 5 20 17 0.59
    Wigan 7 1 4 2 7 1

As you can see, our top four opponents on a points-per-game basis are:

    1. Arsenal
    2. Bolton
    3. Manchester City
    4. Chelsea

On the contrary, our worst four are:

    16. Liverpool
    17. Manchester United
    18. West Ham
    19. Everton

That's amazing. Got to be worth a bet next Saturday just in case. Wonder what the odds on a 1-0 to the hornets will be?
