Thats a good tip , cheers LBH......

I live in the planets area , i tend to head up round van**** pitch way , work my way to heath road , cut through to plantation up by the star , then back down , heading into riverbank and round to the rec and homewards , its 5.1miles apparently , or if i`m feeling frisky , my way up through pages head to tiddenfoot pit , round there a couple of times , then canal way back to past vimy road and wind way back to planets , which is about 6 miles....

some of my mates do 7-8 miles by starting in heath and reach and then some massive winding circuit round stockgrove , i fancy joining them but wnat decent footwear first

Best advice, don't run on tarmac or concrete, but deffo get a pro to test your feet. As above, there's quite a few running shops about that will do it. OK you'll pay through the nose for your first pair but after that you'll know what to buy.

I speak from experience having had shin splints, it's worth the initial outlay.

the clay pipe has had some `issues` over the last few years , to put it mildly , it used to be had by a watford fella , it doesnt have the finest ale in the world...

I think it's run by Giles now, used to run the Junction in Bulbourne by Tring, though this is 18 months ago I recall he had it, and I saw him in there the other week, could be wrong though. He was a biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiig man.

That for me is one of the greatest ever comments on here.

Some issues ? its been down to the doldrens and back again and kicked while it was coming back up. Cracking place, some real proper people in there, but how often has it been taken over by the travelling community ?

Every time it gets back on its feet the dros come back

I'm not a regular, its just most local. I tend to use it as the odd meeting place and when i go somewhere to watch the footie.

It's quite a decent little pub, good beer, decent atmosphere and near home

The White Horse is a decent boozer, cracking beer but a bit out of the way for me. The Golden Bell always has a decent couple of ales on, nice food, good atmosphere and a strict 'no dikcheads or pikeys' policy which is most agreeable.

Well , registered for my first half marathon today , 13 and a bit miles , looking forward to it , but its a bit of a step up distance wise , did 9 miles last Sunday as a taster , through Stockgrove , Rushmere and Great Brickhill back to Heath & Reach

I'm looking in to doing some serious running this year. The Sunday football is coming to and end for me (too many injuries) so I'm looking to keep fit another way. I've always fancied the idea of running long distances but a quick test run a couple of weeks ago tells me I've got a lot of work to do. 3 miles felt like it was going to kill me!

It'll take time but you;ll get there. I used to do long distances and did the London Marathon last year, however, haven't been running reguarly (barely at all) since January. I went a few weeks ago for 3 miles and as you say- it hurts. I know that after a few runs it will be comfortable and a case of building up the distance again.

No mate , people get inudated with charity requests all the time so i feel that its a bit pushy , if i go OK on this one i may consider something longer for myself next year that i can really put a sponsorship on and say "look at this , this IS going to be damn hard , please sponsor me" .......also , when i next do a charity thing , i think i`m going to just walk into Willen Hospice (my favourite charity) and ask for a sponsor form , i dont like all this justgiving these days , its too easy.....if you know what i mean

Nas - join with me and a few others for the one `im doing (on my facebook) youll be raring to go by November mate....!

JustGiving does make it very easy, but I think raising money for local charities is one walk of life where too easy is a good thing :)

Great stuff Layts keep it going.

I'm doing the Stevenage half on 4 November 2012. For your first half just make sure you get round, the time almost doesn't matter at all nobody really cares.

    And then get bladdered afterwards.

    I'm keen to get fit again but I can't go running just for the sake of it. A mate of mine recognised this and has set me a challenge knowing I can't say no! He has set a date in early September for me to run from the Globe in LB to a pub in Cheddington. It's straight up the canal and a little over eight miles. Not a lot but at the moment two miles is a push for me. I've been for a few runs and am learning all the time what works for me and what doesn't. I've been out and done just over two miles in 18 minutes this morning and it was facking warm. What I have found that has helped has been;

Keeping my feet low as mentioned earlier in this thread.
Not checking how far I have gone all the time
Thinking about work/women/football etc. and really distracting myself
Strangely, I find I can run further by just keeping going as opposed to stopping for a breather. If I stop then I struggle to get going again.
A free app I have on my I phone called runkeeper is bloody brilliant - well worth downloading.
