Looked at doing this but I've got 2 weeks at Euro 2016 just before so not the best preparation for a half marathon!

My bro had to pull out of London this year so his entry gets moved to next year. He's aiming for 4 hours. It'll be his first.

I'm no runner, but a soccer and basketball player, so that being said...

If I've got a little cold or don't feel well (fondly remembering my misspent youth of Friday night drinking and Saturday ballgames...) and if I feel I CAN play, I will play. The only other thing I'm concerned with is whether or not I'm contagious, which shouldn't be as much of an issue for you lone wolf runners.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that if the problem's "above the neck" then you should be ok to exercise but if it's below (eg. chest infection, etc) you shouldn't; the exception being if it's your sinuses, when you shouldn't run either. Don't know if that's just an old maid's tale or medically based, though.

It shouldn't make the cold any worse but if I have a bad cold often my joints hurt and I find moving painful. I can't imagine it would be doing my muscles much good either. Might be just me though.

i did a quick google and like you guys said, the main points seemed to surround how you feel in in side yourself, with consideration to chest and joint pains. but my main problem is lethargy. i just find myself getting really tired when i have a cold, and i'm not sure if going on a run would give me a sudden injection of energy or just make me even more immobile.

edit: i did the run. i hope the unseasonably cold and dry weather coupled visible lingering pollution clouds gave my respiratory and immune system the jolts they needed to put me back in good binge drinking health

does anyone use a gps/hr watch to track themselves? i dont like taking my phone with me and would prefer to just hit the forest or the beach with as little as possible on my person (while still quantifying the experience, of course). does anyone have any recommendations?

I've really got the parkrun bug at the moment doing one in 5 out of the last 6 weeks. Did a new course this morning in Stevenage. Just love starting the weekend off with a slightly smug healthy fit feeling before it then descends. My times are hovering around the 23 minute mark on flatish courses. Any regular parkrunners on here? Which parkruns?

You know mine, Tring. :) Haven't been so much in the past few weeks as I want to go slightly further on a Saturday morning. Managed a PB a couple of weeks ago of 22:29. I've also done the Aylesbury one which is completely flat so a fast time is achievable there. Was it Stevenage you did this morning?

yeah it was the first event at Stevenage Fairlands Valley Park. There is also a new parkrun in Hatfield which started last week. Tring is the only parkrun where I actually get slower every time I do it.

After 5 weeks of no training due to some random thing called a Piriformis muscle & after accupuncture on Thursday I completed the London 2 Brighton 100k on Saturday in 15 hours. It was a fantastic event with great break points & clearly marked. If anyone is looking to venture into the Ultra scene I recommend it. Me i'll stick to marathons from now on.

Congratulations, but you must be totally mad!

I suffered from piriformis syndrome last year. A right pain in the arse.

First step is to ensure you don't sit on a big fat wallet when sitting or driving. Either spend all your money, or move it to a front pocket.

Congratulations! I've been looking at the Thames Path Challenge 100k next year (looks like the same company as London to Brighton). Please to see it's run well.

Good to see the acupuncture worked for you! Hadn't seen any sessions on Strava recently so wondered if you were cured or not.

No been pretty much doing nothing which is a killer when you doing 50+ miles to nothing. The event was really well ran & would recommend it. The food stops were unreal & the first aid, course info was second to none. Couldn't have picked a better organisation for my one & only Ultra.

A wet St Albans half marathon done yesterday in 1 hour 51 minutes. Nowhere near a PB but one of those races where just getting round in a semi respectable time was the goal.

That's a good time - it's a nice course but not the easiest.

Cheers yeah is a nice course was my first time doing it. Was going well until that long hill at around mile 8 couldn't push on after that.

Ran the Thame 10k this morning in 45:13. Wanted under 45 mins but suffering with a cold so not too bad considering.

    Good time though, :sign15:

Did one a couple of weeks ago, only managed just over 49 minutes. Was disappointed as was expecting 47.30. But I'm getting old.

Sorry if this has been covered already, but I've only scanned this thread. I've recently started running but have noticed on days with high pollen levels I'm struggling, are there any hayfever suffering runners on here who can give me tips?

Beconase spray for nostrils, running sunglasses as they act as a barrier against pollen and petroleum jelly or vic vapour-rub smeared on inside of nostrils as it catches pollen particles going up your nose. Or...

Running around a flooded lake earlier that suit might've come in handy!

I didn't suffer from any pollen allergies until mid 40's. If your Dr can prescribe you a cortico steroid nasal spray, that'll be 10x more effective than Beconase and you'll be like Chris Froome and all the other cyclists and athletes taking a performance enhancing drug (as it is) which will also make you faster and effective.

As will Viagra. Which aids blood flow to all muscles. I expect pro ballers and most Olympic runners are on that or an equivalent - its not banned and gives to 5-10% in endurance events.

GP prescribed pills or sprays are much more effective than whats available in Boots or supermarkets.

I'd get allergy tested at the GP to see what it is your allergic to. Mine is Birch Pollen (hits the end of March/Early April) and grass pollen (gets going strongest now til late August).

The spray I take is Fluticasone Propionate.

    The antihistamine tablets, Fexofenadine.

Doesn't it get painful running with a massive (in my case anyway) boner?

Thanks, I'll defintely have a look into this. Perhaps not the viagra part just yet...

It sounds like you get a rough deal though, 5 or 6 months of it!

I suffer from hayfever which in turn brings on asthma. A bit of a hinderance when trying to run. Last year was bad, I was wiped out for nearly 2 months. I think I'll visit the doctor this year to see if I can get something stronger than the usual over the counter allergy tablets. It doesn't just affect running, it stops me sleeping, working etc.

No Not at all - I did when I relied on supermarket antihistamines, but with the Dr prescribed, more powerful meds, nothing. Not even red eyes.

No but it makes you an even finer pole vaulter.

I did the Bassingbourn half yesterday despite spending the 24 hours or so in the build up to it with some sort of virus which left me feeling utterly exhausted before I'd started. It was stupid to do it but I'd rather not finish it than not even try. I managed to finish it in 2h16m which is a poor time but given how rough I felt and it was a hot day I'll take that. I've since spent the afternoon and night trying to rehydrate - gallons of water going in but not much coming out yet.

Did the Great Newham 10k today. What a fantastic event & finishing in the Olympic stadium on the track was an experience not to be forgotten. The fact the kids had a go in the afternoon was even better. Felt injury free today & really enjoyed the course. Well recommended especially if you have kids.

I'm looking for a marathon to do next year that doesn't clash with the football season. Edinburgh is looking favourite at the moment, just need to grow a pair and book it now.
