So his issue is that we have a maximum squad size for over 21's? I completely missunderstood his post to mean he believed there was a maximum number within the 25.

Not sure how stopping top teams from stockpiling HG players and making everyone have the same size squad can kill the English game? It's fair imo

Understand where he's coming from regarding UK players being considered HG though

Burnley are signing Charlie Taylor it seems. Just give Hull the £8m for Robertson and get it done.

  4. I yhink it is more that its strange than that it isn't fair. From the professional point of view of where the investment came from to develop the player, it makes perfect sense: removed from nationality and social background and based on the culture under which they were nurtured.

Doesn't make it perfect but at least shows some logic in its application.

    This thread is confusing!

Just to clarify, there is NO LIMIT on homegrown players. We could name 25 in the squad if we wanted to. The only limit is on NON-HOMEGROWN players - you can't name more than 17 in the squad of 25.

Well there is a limit. 25. Think what some may be suggesting is that there shouldn't be any limit to hg at all. 50 if you want.

But then the big teams would buy all the hg and screw everyone else over.

  7. R4E

That's not a limit on homegrown players, that's a limit on senior players regardless of where they're from. Yes, technically it means you can't name more than 25 senior homegrown players in your squad but I don't think any premier league clubs would feel that is a problem. And as far as stockpiling young players (which someone else mentioned), the fact that clubs can use an unlimited number of under 21 players (homegrown or non-homegrown) means that there's nothing to stop the big clubs from doing so.

Starting his career at United is irrelevant. The fact that he enjoys a packet of pork scratchings down the pub, along with a few pints of London Pride means that his status as HG is all but cemented.

You forgot the golden rule. He is only Scottish when he has a bad game. He is British when he plays well.

We should hold a referendum to decide if he's HG or not

It is a shame if he is not classed as HG as I would be 100% behind bringing him in, but if he isn't I'm not so sure :(

I might get stick for this suggestion which is why I am only putting it as part of this thread but what about Telles from Porto instead of Robertson. He's 24, he is a first team left back and he speaks Portuguese.... It's as if he is a perfect match to Silva's philosophies.

Now if that website 'transfermarkt' is anything to go by, he is valued at £7.65 million. However, because of inflation, i'd expect the actual asking price would be for around £15 million. Although it may be double the price of Robertson and Friend, i'd argue that he has bags of experience from multiple different leagues at such a young age and that he has already gathered interest from big clubs such as Inter Milan in the past so there is definitely a prospect in him. Furthermore £15 million isn't too shabby for long term young players and that is exactly what we need to invest in now considering half our squad are ageing pensioners. I think the Pozzo's are already doing just that based upon the signing of Hughes. On top of that, I doubt his wages are anything more than 30k a week at Porto so an offer of 40k a week would be very enticing for him and his agent if we did want him and it wouldn't be anything outrageous compared to other wages in the squad (Deeney ya lucky bustard)

In regards to Robertson, I think he would have been the perfect signing had he been homegrown... However I have been searching vigorously around the market for HG Premier League Left Backs and the only ones of quality that are arguably better than Holebas are either at top 7 clubs already such as Davies, Shaw and Rose or are players that are just as old if not older that Holebas which would be a waste of time. The rest are mostly hot prospects that teams such as West Ham will plan on using in the future too so it would be a waste of time trying to scout them (i.e Cresswell). So I came to the conclusion that in terms of left back position it's probably best we forget the HG idea and look to purchase HG players in other positions such as Goalkeepers or strikers or maybe even wingers. So this giving up on a HG LB ultimately gave me the idea of searching for a foreign quality left back... And it was Telles that really stood out for me as he doesn't seem to be too unrealistic a target and he has a quite a few attributes as mentioned above

Oh, just realised Cresswell is 27... How time flies by... Still I stand by my point that any HG youngster in the Prem will be difficult to get a hold of cheaply and buying from the championship is always a risk; especially for wing backs who are expected to do a lot of counter attacking runs, crosses and retreats when opposition is on the attack.

Cresswell turns 28 this year, how does he qualify as a hot prospect?!

Telles has indeed garnered interest from Inter, to the point where he played for them, but he was not very successful. I know the metrics of 'good enough for Inter' and 'good enough for Watford' are not entirely overlapping, but at the same time, he's quite Holebas 2.0 is he not, in that he's very quick, very attacking, and awful at defending?

Chiming in again to note your second post that came in whilst I was typing about Cresswell.

I have only seen 1 live game with him playing at Inter so if I am honest, my answer may not account for all of his games but from what I have seen, he does play a Holebas-esque style of charging down the wing and holding it by the corner flag waiting for a winger to join him so he can either cross it or link play it into the box. His defending seemed suspect as he isn't exactly a tall player and the Serie A isn't exactly the most challenging of leagues so no awards should be won for average tackles; but that said, he does seem quite skilful which would be a breath of fresh air as long as he isn't too greedy

Take this with a pinch of salt though because I am basing some of his playstyle on highlights on youtube and the 1 live game I watched a while back which shouldn't be taken for granted

We really are his only realistic option now Burnley have signed Charlie Taylor. The only other club that he has been linked with is Liverpool but I can't see them going for him. For £8mil he would be worth bringing in. Having him and Holebas fight it out for a starting place will be healthy and it keeps Holebas in his toes.

If we get Hughes, Robertson and Markovic for £23mil that's great business. All 23 and under, with potential resale values that exceed what we paid for them, great business if this happens.

In all honesty, if we spend a lot of money on a LB, I can see us having to buy a second cheaper one as well as there is no way Holebas is going to be happy as back-up and would likely ask to leave.

We've been linked to a lot of left backs in this window. Gibbs, Tymon, Santon, Mendy, Aogo, Friend and Robertson. It makes me think that these are not all just back ups to Holebas.

With that many players being looked at, I think it's likely that Holebas will be off and two new left backs will be signed. One first choice and one squad player.

Both could be from Hull as well, Robertson and Tymon. If we sign 2, that's the most likely I think. Unless we sign Friend for way cheaper than £8mil, then I wouldn't mind Robertson and Friend.
