This one is for our more mature supporters...but 30 years ago today, Steve Sherwood scored a goal at Coventry. I am happy to say I was actually there to see the landmark event, and it was exactly as the WO described. A long clearance up the field, bounced once and Cally went up to head the ball on the rise with the keeper coming out to challenge, but the wind ensured the ball bounced higher than it should and it sailed over Avramovic and into the net. I remember Shirley was a bit embarrassed. It wasn't until the announcer called his name out as the goalscorer that he awkwardly put up both arms and down again very quickly, clearly not knowing how to celebrate. Great memories. http://www.watfordobserver.co.uk/sport/10932945.On_this_date_in_Watford_FC_s_history/?ref=var_0
Quiz question for you..who was the other keeper who played for Watford who has also scored a senior goal from a goal kick, though this time not for us?
Paul Robinson scored one against us playing for spurs at white hart lane 2009, as the previous poster said Pat Jennings in the days of black and white TV
I was at the Spurs game with my Spurs supporting mate in their posh seats. Spent the whole game telling everyone around me how much better Foster was than Robinson, and that he should definitely play for England one day. One of the worst games of my life.
Not from a goal kick.. but Mart Poom was another one time Watford goalkeeper who got on the scoresheet..
Haha, so was I! I had been bigging him up big time, sat with 2 Spurs friends, and he went and done that. Though I still blame ****tu for just leaving it. As soon as the goal went in, I didn't say a word, just got up and went for a beer. I did see David James score a goal for Watford's Youth team many moon's ago, must have been about 88.
I was there too also with a spurs mate. Not a great day for hornets fans, but I made a fantastic weekend of it, nevertheless. Ireland beat Pakistan in the cricket world cup on St Patrick's day! Some minor consolation.
I was at Cov that day - great on the pitch, awful off it. The supporters special train did not stop at Hemel. About 30 of us ended up on a coach that dropped us off outside the Cov home end at 2.55pm. In the ensuing carnage my mate copped the biggest right-hander I've ever seen.
