Obviously. I don’t think the club runs for free. But I don’t think our starting XI would all be on £50k. And all the other costs you list are things other clubs have by and large - we aren’t unique in that.

But we are in the richest league in the world. And I like the way we do things differently by trying to uncover talented gems. I still don’t think the figures match up unless we operate at a massive loss each year and require a sale and TV money to bridge the gap - that’s what I suspect happens. But we need to find much better ways of making revenue.

Our revenues are massive, our running costs are massive. To risk £30m plus salary costs for a new player is still a massive sum to find when you are having to run the club as a proper business rather than operating with endless supply of funds as many of our peers are. It's market economics, as prem revenues go up, the market for the best resources to maintain that revenue stream go up in parallel. Except it's worse as the owners with an endless supply of wealth are happy to push those costs much much higher than the market revenues would otherwise dictate. We therefore only spend big when we believe we can re-sell for a similar fee or spend low (like Dawson) where the re-sale value is limited. I can't see us ever spending £25-30m on a quality 27 year old for example whereas other owners would be happy to write that off.

Financial Fair Play, while well intended, lies in wait for clubs like ours. It's worked out to help the top clubs - and those will billionaire owners who can arrange semi-bogus massive sponsorships. We actually have to turn a profit, so it's going to be a gradual step up the ladder. Getting European football and surviving a round or two would be huge for us both from a money standpoint and as a player recruitment tool.

Sponsoring the training ground is surely too far to be allowed. Hardly anyone outside the club sees a training ground (apart from Bielsa), and even then you don't come out of it thinking "I fancy a flight on Emirates".

FFP is pretty light-touch in the Premier League though. For clubs like ours who don't trouble UEFA competitions and who are above the EFL it's a pretty minor consideration I think.

To balance the Bristol City point. they have also signed Rene Gilmartin from Colchester.

Stuck some money on Bristol City to get top 6 this season, think they've strengthened well and sure there'll be more to come. Also don't see anyone stumping up £25m for Webster which will be great for them.

Therein lies the problem. £8m for a player who isn't any good! I think we paid something like that for Doucoure so the bargains are out there

Thats my point. I really don't think our average wage is £50k p/w. I'd say its much nearer £30k looking at the makeup of the squad.

Brighton have bid £20m plus add-ons according to SSN. A journalist for the local paper down there says there is firm interest but he’s not sure Brighton have bid that amount....

Dunk, Duffy and Matt Clarke - they already have 3 decent CB’s so it’s an odd move for that price unless one of the regular pair are leaving. I’d have any of the 4 though!

Dunk --> Leicester, Maguire --> Utd, probably.

I think Brighton are expecting Dunk to go to Leicester, once Maguire goes to United.

    Or, what lowerrous said.

  15. Leicester are supposedly looking at one of 'our' targets - Bastos.

I’m not entirely certain of that. Rodgers was interviewed after a recent friendly and intimated that the price for some of the rumoured names was far too big. I’m not sure they see value in £40m+ for Dunk (that’s the price Brighton have said bidding will start at...) when they have Caglar Soyuncu and Filip Benkovic already there. Rodgers definitely rates Benkovic as he had him at Celtic and has played him in pre-season.

Wouldn’t surprise me if they didn’t replace Maguire in this window.

Lee Johnson (Bristol City manager) was just interviewed on SSN - hardly put the ‘Not for Sale’ sign up! Pretty much said he will leave when the price is right and has had bids from numerous PL clubs.

I think the Sarr deal will rule us out of any more big deals but you never know!

Except that we won't sign Sarr so we will have the full €10m that Gino has offered to cover our £1.4m bid for this guy.

If Johnson said 19 PL clubs had bid for Webster, how confident would you be we were one of them?

Depends if he’s been watching SSN. According to HB1, they don’t even recognise we are in the PL...

I would be confident we bid. Probably about £500k offered in instalments.

That much? More like a 6 month supply of Lucozade and not a day more.
