Didn't we win 11 of our last 12 games to reach the Play Offs and get promoted?

Port Vale away stands out for me for some reason, and the bundled in goal at Barnsley in the sunshine

Mooney's diving header that missed his head but went in off his back! I remember it all so clearly..

I've only been to Vale once. Ace striker Trevor Senior scored. You don't forget a one-off like that.

Have just been digging around and came up with these from that season.
    Some interesting reads.

Oh and in answering my own question, yes that was the game.

and getting to Wembley with the most epic penalty shoot-out I've ever seen at St. Andrews.

Was talking about this the other day. Port Vale away is my favourite ever away game. Everywhere from Stoke station to the ground was full of Watford and pubs were spilling out onto the streets.

In the ground was like a european ultras experience. We didn't stop singing even when we went 1-0 down and you just knew we were going to win.

Launched myself about 4 rows forward when we scored the winner.

Didnt Mooney score something like 7 in 10 on that run?

    One of my favourite's too!

The atmosphere that night was superb and the late winner made it even better.

On the downside, my car got broken into on my drive back in Warrington about 5 minutes after I got home!!!

Gutted that I don't have that seasons review, have a lot of sh1t seasons but not that one!!
  13. I thought that season had died on it's backside after the appalling displays against Oxford and Bury. From Tranmere on we were incredible. The display against Bolton in the league where we won 2-0 could have been 5 or 6.

That's like the average for the play-offs.

From what I remember it was a pretty tough run-in too with wins at Birmingham plus beating Bolton twice.

Had 4 points more at this point than we do now... don't think it's going to happen to be honest.

Possibly my fav Watford game of all time. That and the 2-2 draw against Port Vale when Gudmundsson scored 2 and I got soaked walking back to the car.

P.s as a footnote to this, I'd say the 1998/99 season was my favourite so far as a Watford supporter. My first season I remember was 1989/90 so this is why I exclude the first Taylor spell.

That season had some stand out away days, winning 4-1 at Bristol C and Swindon, the 2-1 win at Brum was superb,Port Vale and of course Barnsley.
Those were the days when i'd go to every home game and about 75% of away games. The only way I could do that now is if them numbers come in tomorrow night.

Ha same here! I used to do most away days, but I also remember paying £4 to stand on a terrace at Stockport compared to paying £29 to get into Derby now.

    There is quite a poignant sign on the side of the Rous Stand quoting Sir Stanley Rous that says something along the lines of;

'I do hope when I look back that football has become nothing more than a sport'.

Unfortunately that hasn't happened and it is now a business/cash cow which is why I fear the better days in football have gone.
  23. Richard Johnson's first goal against Bristol City is still one of the best hit shots I've ever seen. Ridiculous

Yeah same for me I would have been in my mid 20s back then then still living at home and most of my wages were spent on booze and footy. Great days.
