He got rid of the catastrophic Ivic. We should all be on our knees fellating him in gratitude.

He gets away with it because our recruitment has never come close to buying a replacement. Our striker position has not evolved for 10 years which is crazy. Yes a few of those seasons, Deeney was in his prime and earned his place. It’s been since Mazzari that Deeney has been a hindrance to our progress as a club and unfortunately the hierarchy seem to be in Camp Deeney. I don’t hate the guy I just hate what he has become under the Pozzos, which is a polished turd

The sacking comment was probably a reflection on his lack of managerial experience and qualifications
A standard deeney "off the cuff" comment
It could be that he has agreed to a reduction in salary to allow for his radio/media duties.

That's a very generous interpretation. I think it's hard to read it as anything other than a comment on Gino's trigger-happy reputation.

I don’t get this idea of “the fans letting him get away with it”. Yes we all care about Watford FC but most people have families, work commitments and other things that are more important than waging war with a player/owner/chairman. What did you want us fans to do? Boo at every game? Send a strongly worded email to the club? Tweet Troy and tell him we don’t like him? Hold up banners at games like children? I’m not happy with the current situation but I remember it a lot worse and just want to watch my club.

Even if he was the best player at the club, I think the influence he has over the backroom would be greater than I would be comfortable with a player having.

One of the most disappointing parts about summer was the inability to move him on and begin a new era at the club

Instead of relentlessly bleating about it on an anonymous Internet forum why don't all those who think the club is being so badly run organise a proper protest group like West Ham fans have had for years and campaign to get Pozzo, Duxbury, Deeney, insert name of current manager here, etc etc out of the club? Of course, such a group wouldn't actually achieve anything, but you might at least win some respect and, you never know, even be taken semi-seriously

I think the tipping point was the infamous "cojones" comment after we beat arsenal a couple of years ago. Since then, his playing career has been on a downward trajectory and that was the comment that gave him a seat at the table of opinionated B list football pundits.

There’s more than a grain of truth in this. It’s not 10 years of course but does date back to Ighalo losing form in 2016. I don’t get the vitriol against Deeney, but it is crazy that he’s still our best centre forward.

I think it's called seeing what's blatantly clear and not living in a dream world and deluding yourself into seeing something that's so plain and obvious in a different, imaginary way, through a big old set of rainbow and butterfly framed, rose tinted glasses.

The evidence with Deeney is clear as day right in front of everyone's faces. It's completely insane that some will still try to make excuses/ignore it/desperately try to spin things in a nonsensical positive light, but also completely and utterly unsurprising.

Good thread, and some decent discussion.

Just one quick observation from me - I thought Deeney was absolutely spot on with his ‘cajones’ line about Arsenal; they’ve lacked any sort of bottle for years.

I'd say it's rather ambiguous. You could interpret it either way, due to a lack of any context clues. The audio recording might lend a different light to things, of course (or other things he said that didn't make it into the article).

The problem is he has a lot of good will from all the seasons he has spent here. He has done well for the club and himself. But there comes a time when every player great or small reaches that inevitable point when their career goes on the wane.

For reasons other than football which of course is a mistake Gino has in his limited wisdom decided to pin his colours to Deeney's mast. I think he must be of a mindset that Deeney is somehow in the minds of supporters the talismanic figure that is mentioned and regurgitated in media reports. That somehow if he is let go an army of fans will descend on the Vic and burn it to the ground.

He forgets that we support Watford FC not Deeney FC. Unfortunately the latitude that has been given by the owner to Troy has meant his ego has grown out of all proportion to his actual footballing ability. He's not Messi. It has come to the point where he has been pivotal in having a manager removed who may have been threatening his spot as leader of the gang. Things that happen behind closed doors should remain behind closed doors according to GT. But as Nath has reminded us he has come out unable to control is tongue and in a way that portays Ivic in a bad light.

If Ivic and his staff think he is unfit to play and maybe fatigued then like it or not he should acquiesce with grace and prove in training he is up for the next game. He had a face like thunder ? We have seen his efforts of the last season or so and they are not really good enough for someone who is supposed to lead the line. The unbelievable statement released by the club shows that the hierarchy have no understanding of this but that somehow his mere presence will bring promotion.

The squad has been ageing in key areas season by season particularly upfront but nothing has been done to address this over recent seasons. Instead the idiots in charge want to hand out retirement contracts when people like Deeney should have been moved on and a new young model like Toney brought in. But it takes cojones to do that and Gino does not have any of those let alone any brain cells.

I liked Deeney. I thought he will go down as a club legend. He turned his career and life around but as with many others I suspect that legacy has been severely tarnished because he is now more of a millstone than asset to the club. No way would I put him in the bracket of Luther or Cliff Holton for instance.

Amazingly, they had the bottle, "cojones" and without a doubt the motivation to beat us in all but one (draw) of the following five fixtures after those comments...

    Good work, Troy!

Do you have any thing to back up your asumption ? Or are you just using it to reaffirm your Deeney bias?

Sorry, I'm referencing the actual clip, not the article. He's specifically talking about the Watford job. He's referencing a job known for being a short-term post, with a trigger-happy owner. He starts the offending comment with "if I'm being totally honest" which is a pretty good indication that we're about to be treated to a Troyism "Jimenez is a loser", "Bellerin's hair was in his eyes".

I'd love to give him the benefit of the doubt but even dusting off my 2015-era Deeney-tinted specs, I can't see the comment as anything other than an ill-advised, but truthful mocking of the running of the club.

    Here's the clip, if interested.

He gets away with it because , as others have already said, he has no competition.
That is why he loves 'Dre . No competition.
Had we signed Toney then Troys shortcomings would be there for all to see.
However he is still the pick of an average bunch .

Are you sure he doesn’t pick himself? Not totally convinced there isn’t something in his deal personally.

And I really don’t understand how you can think him saying ‘why would I want the Watford job if I’m just going to get sacked in 5 months?’ is not out of order? That goes WAY beyond attempting to not be bland. He’s openly painting the club and his bosses in a terrible light - on a national radio station. What he said may well be true - but let those outside the club fuel that fire. Deeney decided to tip a Jerry can of his own fuel over the top. Why? For a cheap laugh from Ally fuc*ing McCoist and that Rushden tw*t who wasn’t fired from Soccer bloody AM.

As for the other stuff he said? I don’t like it but we have to accept he was going to be asked about it. I blame the club for firstly letting have a regular slot on the radio, and secondly not pulling him this week after the weekends incidents.

I genuinely think he’s smartly (for him) woven his way into every bit of the fabric of the club so he knows the impact when his place is threatened. I genuinely think the owner is worried it would all fall apart. The subtle things like naming the canteen ladies etc on his radio show the other day...it’s him suggesting he sets the standards, he knows everyone etc and without him, the house of cards falls down. Gino clearly thinks so too.

So let me summarise the points made, please let me know if I mussed anything.

Troy has controlled the team selection of all of the managers we have had.
Even though they have all picked him he has led revolts against them and got them sacked.
Troy has controlled the owners and board to ensure only strikers worse than him were bought so he continues to be the best striker we have.
Troy has controlled all (most) of the players that have come and gone so he has full control of the squad and can force the manager out when he wants.
Troy has forced the owners and board to allow him to say what he wants and get media work, where he has said things that should not be said.
Troy controls all of the media and pundits to say good things about him and what he adds to WFC.
Troy is an evil thug and should never been given a 2nd chance. None of the supporters of WFC have ever done anything wrong in their lives or lost control due to drink.

Either Troy is a mastermind / the devil, or all of the other people involved in the club, owners, board, managers, players, over his time with us are just puppets?

I am sure I missed some things but have most of the key points.
