Wow! You think I'd be happy that one of Deeney's family died of the virus?

I think I'll leave that right there.

I think it is your post that demonstrates how some people only see life as black and white. And typically, you make outrageous accusations, then run away.

But you think he and the rest of our team should take the risk because they are paid vast sums of money.

I’m in the “void season” camp but why are people being weird and formally resigning from the forum because someone has a different opinion? It’s completely bizarre behaviour.

It’s a virus. It kills people. We have to adapt to live with it when there is acceptable risk. When that risk is acceptable is open to debate and I agree football is rushing things here. However I’m not going to say “that’s it! I’m leaving the forum because the rest of you want people to die!”

    Stop being hysterical.

No point in trying to have an adult conversation with you.

Spot on. I was halfway through writing something similar about risk but you've nailed it before I could post.

This thread has taken a very odd turn in the last few hours off the back of nothing out of the ordinary happening.

Troy has been honest and open.

Better to be that than go to training but looking over his shoulder all time having doubts and worries on his mind.

There might be many players feeling the same but too afraid to speak their mind?

Their clubs maybe wouldn't be so accepting and understanding.

I'm also in the void season camp for several reasons. But on the basis of it going ahead then I think the team should turn up and the players should take whatever precautions necessary to keep their family safe.

What risk if they socially distance and to be extra safe he relocated for the next few weeks ??????

  11. The undeniable truth

The undeniable truth First Team Captain

Of course it isn't ! Who said it was ? Why is it so binary for you that you either play football and risk dying or are 100% safe ? The testing should ensure football training and playing is safe but if Troy or others really still feel they risk bringing home the virus and have high risk family members, they can always stay away from home for a few weeks.
Or do you feel football should stop until we all have a vaccine which may be a year away from mass production and full availability ?

Please don't try to belittle me and feign anguish because you are unable to defend your earlier position. I don't have any problem with players not turning up if football returns. The lives of loved ones are far more important than football.

Well done on changing your position seamlessly in your last post so you can appear reasonable once again. You say you want the season voided but if football does go ahead the team should play taking necessary precautions. I am not sure how you play competitive football and in turn keep your family safe as you suggest. This is Troy's argument which you don't appear to like. Its not difficult to understand but the mad rush to finish the season seems to be engulfing you that Troy is some sort of prima donna and if Watford are relegated because he is absent then it is somehow his fault.

I suspect it is your clear dislike of Troy that stops you from thinking what he says is a totally reasonable argument.

Why should he even be asked to take the risk? In a competitive game how do you socially distance? I don't understand the madness that we must end the season before August. Personally I don't want football to return until fans can go to the games. The matches from Germany last week seemed like soulless warm up games. Would you like to see our season decided in that manner? I hope that once the risk is minimised for players and fans alike we can finish the season properly.

I think that you saying that I would be happy for one of Deeney's family to be killed by the virus is all the belittling that this forum needs at this time.

And your belief that I keep changing my position on this issue is further proof that you just cannot read English.

Just looking at the statistics and around 300 children die or receive serious injury as crashed car occupants every year, which compares with 3 by this virus. In very rough terms being a car occupant is about 100 times more dangerous than the virus.

I bet all footballers with kids have got car seats for their children, and fully understand that every time they take their kids out in the car, they are risking their lives. But they still do it.

So if fans can't safely go to games for a year, just cancel football and let all the clubs not owned by multimillionaires go to the wall ? All because you prefer atmosphere at the games ? Anyone who goes to work or even food shops now takes a risk and doesn't have the luxury of knowing everyone they come into contact with has been tested, and re-tested, and re-tested, for the virus.

I don't think this argument stands, though. We have long since internalised the risks from driving. The virus is new, and its modes of transmission and cause are poorly understood. The human brain simply treats this type of novel, unprecedented risk in a different way. It's not rational.

  19. zztop

    zztop Eurovision Winner 2015

I'm aware of that, we have normalised driving to the extent it is easily an acceptable risk, even though it is probably far higher.

I understand the concern players will have. Everything I do these days has me (in the back of my mind) calculating the risks of actions I take. But I do think that after careful consideration the risk for players and their family is relatively small, and there is always the option of a player to not live with his family for a matter of weeks.

Perhaps. I would hazard that the majority do not consider it rationally at present, though. When the virus is a more familiar part of life, that balance may well change.

Keep going as I think you are nearly there.

Do you think footballers have a moral duty to play matches because they are being paid to do so and the FA wants to complete the season? If you think yes then you are surely asking players to risk the lives of their family because so little is still known about the virus. I don't want to suggest that you would like to see someone in Troy's family die but it is a potential and unnecessary consequence of a return to football at this point in time.

Simple. You don't. Instead, you take other measures to mitigate the risk. The same principle applies to any workplace and in fact applies beyond coronavirus into all manner of health and safety risks.

Unfortunately the virus has meant that so many viable businesses are likely to struggle but health has to take priority over the economy

Agreed. But if in this instance a player is not satisfied that the workplace is a safe environment to return to, should he be brought to task for failing to help the team in fighting a relegation battle?

I think the heat in this discussion is because people are seeing it as a logical and rational choice where it is more of an emotional and perhaps, therefore, less rational decision.

We can all say confidentiality what we would do in the same position but we don't have to make that choice.

Troy, and perhaps others, have interpreted the information and risk and come to a conclusion as to what it means to them and their family.

The club should provide, and I am sure they are, as much information and reassurances as they can to the players. And are backing that up with robust h&s procedures and guidelines.

But, at the end of the day, it is the players choice and I am happy to support them.

Obviously it might have a devastating impact on our chances of survival but, if the players are genuinely unhappy then I can't see what else the club can do, whether we regard the player's fears as rational or not.

It's not binary is it? The nation's health and the economy are entwined. The healthier the economy the better our healthcare. It's a balancing act.

Additionally the more you panic, scaremonger and increase lockdown measures then more people with other diseases are likely to have unfavorable outcomes. You need to get a grip a bit (and I say this as someone who thinks football should be voiding and looking to restart in some form in August).

  29. Keighley

    Keighley Squad Player

More than that, poverty tends to lead to poor health. And lockdown doesn't just mean pushing those with other diseases to the back of the queue, it also risks generating new or exacerbating existing problems, especially ill mental health and domestic violence.

It is, as you rightly say, a balance.

If it's that binary we should all be in full-on lockdown until we have either had the virus or been innoculated then ?

You typed that I would be happy if one of Troy's family was to die from the virus. No one forced you to type that, you chose to.

What a strange logic you have. You think that anyone who looks to us getting back to normality over the next year, will be happy if someone dies as a result. Weird.

During this crisis I have fallen very much out of love with football and been sickened by actions of the powers that be that have just been driven by money and greed. No thought at all for the players or the fans.
For Deeney I fully support him wanting to look after his family first but surely once everybody tested and training grounds etc sanitised if football is pushed to get back up and running surely Deeney could organise accommodation nearer the ground and self isolate from his family and not effectively go on strike. It's not as if sports people in other situations don't spend long periods away from family even in normal times, rugby tours and cricket tours for instance players spend months away from family. Troy as a person is sending out a strong moral message but as a sportsmen what example is he sending to his team mates, he is basically saying it's ok to down tools and he is not up for the relegation dog fight to come.
