First attempt at working out where we need to trim our bloated squad. For people to update periodically as transfers come in or out. Key is non-homegrown over 21, homegrown over 21, under 21. Corrections welcome as it's quite hard to keep track of everyone and their respective ages.

    Goalkeepers (4)

    Gomes
    Pantilimon
    Bachmann
    Dahlberg

    Full backs (8)

    Femenia
    Janmaat
    Foulquier
    Navarro
    Dja DjeDje
    Holebas
    Masina
    Zeegelaar

    Centre backs (8)

    Prodl
    Kabasele
    Kaboul
    Britos
    Cathcart
    Mariappa
    Hoban

    Wilmot

    Central midfielders (5)

    Doucoure
    Capoue
    Cleverley
    Chalobah
    Hughes

    Wide players (7)

    Deulofeu
    Pereyra
    Richarlison
    Amrabat
    Success
    Penaranda
    Lukebakio

    Strikers (6)

    Deeney
    Gray

    Okaka
    Oulare
    Sinclair
    Zarate

So... as it stands we have 38 players around the first team squad. 10 home grown, 5 under 21 and a whopping 23 over 21 non home grown.

Prediction for those that won't be named in the squad come August: Pantilimon, Gomes, Janmaat, Foulquier, Dja DjeDje, Zeegelaar, Prodl, Hoban, Lukebakio, Okaka, Sinclair, Zarate, Oulare.

That would give us four available spots for new signings... but I don't think we'll use them all. GK and a striker, and a midfielder if Doucoure leaves (which I don't think he will now).

Some articles have suggested Estupinan will be getting a chance so you might want to add him in also.

Looks like Gino has yet to master the sum colon brackets thing on Excel.

    Handy for addition.

Why Janmaat. I think he is a useful squad member when fit.

I think there will be a few surprises. I quite like Janmaat (even though he's a dreadful defender of one on ones) but Navarro is a direct competitor as he's over 21. Kiko is our best right back so I think Janmaat might be the one to miss out. We could probably recoup a bit of money for him too due to his Premier League experience.

Yes though Gracia has been playing Femenia as RW so might be room for all 3 ?

Good summary, but a bit unsure about Prodl. Unless we replace him I think he will stay, he's not one that changes clubs frequently. I would have thought Amrabat's future must be in doubt unless Pereyra or Success leave, especially if Femenia gets played further forward again and now we have Sema arriving. Amrabat could also command a fee. But coaches seem to highly rate him, so nothing's certain.

Prodl's just a guess. Javi didn't seem to fancy him that much, he's not at pre-season yet and I seem to remember he made some noises about it might be the time to move on in a recent interview.

Amrabat had his best ever season under Gracia at Malaga, that's the only reason I think he might stay.

HTF did a Scottish lad feature on the Pozzo radar?

    5 Colombians.

Not sure if Clive would see that as recognition of The People or indentured servitude.

    Possibly both.

Someone should spare a thought for the catering team at London Colney,

'Ere Mr Pozzo, Mr Gracia tells me to prepare lunch for 75 for pre-season. I ain't got the kitchen for that, so this Ben Foster you want to sign, he doesn't get any grub until someone clears off.

Interesting to see it all laid out.

It highlights the weakness in strikers and to a slightly lesser extent CDs. I think the guns of Navarro can also play in central defence.

Also shows how we have improved our traditionally weak English quota to the point where there are decisions to be made in keeping it to 8, especially if Foster hopefully returns.

It’s good that we have 4 spots. I think more could be freed up and would add Britos, Success, and possibly Gray to the list of departures.

Need to add Kenny Sema unless he’s sent out on the loan conveyor belt.

So Pantilimon and Zarate out, Foster and Ken Sema in leaves us in the same position overall but we've swapped a striker for another wide attacker, and gained one more HG player.

Still an awful lot of movement out required... we're eight over on senior players.

Zarate isn't really a striker, just plays more centrally than Ken Sema

Excellent thing to pick up on, cheers. I should've created a special category of second striker (in the hole) just for him.

Well when we are in dire need of strikers (which Zarate isn't), saying we have replaced a striker with a wide man is incorrect.

The 'keeper situation is interesting (on a slow Thursday evening with no World Cup games.)

Pantillimon has gone, as has Karnezis, and Gomez has indicated he won't be here next season.

In come Foster (homegrown) and Dahlberg (under 21.)

So in pure numbers compared to last season we're a goalie light. A loan signing to come?

  29. nornironhorn

Only need 3 and Bachmann is still here so strictly speaking we have all we need unless Dahlberg goes on loan again

Christ, you're right! What if Gino and Javi are reading this and don't appreciate how dire the situation is due to someone not labelling a player who didn't even play for us last season correctly on a forum???!!!! If you look at his time at Velez last season, he played more as a striker than an attacking midfielder. He's not a central midfielder, he's not a wide player - for the categories above, he fitted Striker best.

You'd better correct the fact that Femenia can play further forward too, and that Pereyra can also play centrally. Oh and Mariappa can play as a fullback. It's almost as though it's not a precise science.

I agree with three being the normal number with a young fella from the U-23's stepping up as first reserve for the substitute spot should a senior 'keeper get injured.

But last season we had four from January(?) onwards in Gomez, Karnezis, Pantillimon and Bachmann due to Gomez getting injured.

God, I wish the World Cup was on or we were still announcing signings to stop my little brain from overthinking things!

As our squad begins to take shape (albeit outgoings not yet known), I eagerly await Merson's or Nicholas's transfer window grade of C-, whilst enviously looking at the A+ awarded to the south coast plucksters for their (currently only) £1o.17m signing of £4m rated Sheff Utd midfielder David Brooks. How much was Hughes again? Or Chalobah, Deulofeu , Richarlison, etc etc......?

Will they fall into the abyss this year?

Presumably they will as soon as SEH departs.

Unfortunately, GS looks like he’ll get a couple of Euro qualifier matches on probation.

    Where else could Eddie go?
