Perhaps we should have an elephant on the club badge.

We don't often score goals from within the 6 yard box. I would expect this to be unusual. I think we're creating enough chances, but our strikers are just not in the position to take advantage or they miss them.

We have players that can carry the ball deep into the penalty area, with Pererya and Deulofeu scoring goals from close range because of their own ability to take the ball into dangerous areas.

But if we cross it in to the danger area, it's unusual for Watford to finish. The two goals against Spurs, maybe the two at Everton, the third goal against Huddersfield and City spring to mind, but I can't think of too many others that are like this.

We've scored a lot of goals that are long range. Sure, this is great to see, but these are exceptional goals.

We are scoring goals, but the vast majority have been very high quality, hence MotD2 picking up on it last night. It's an unusual occurrence, that a mid-table side are consistently scoring goals of this type.

What we lack is an ability to score simple goals. The chances are there, but we just don't make the most of them. Watching Southampton yesterday, and they have these players. Austin, Ings and Long are all typical poachers. Most Premier League clubs mid-table and above have at least one player who is like this.

Our recognised strikers have scored just 6 of our 23 goals this season. It's remarkably low.

If we had one or two who were reliable in front of goal, we'd be flying. Easily would be in 7th place.

Yes. Our midfielders move the ball around very well and this requires constant, well organized movement off the ball. This does not seem to happen up front, where it is all relatively static. The nearest we have to a player who moves like a poacher is Gray.......... Well........

I agree. It's a shame Gray is so appalling in front of goal. Okaka, Deeney and Success are different. They are all about strength and physicality. These players are traditionally steady but not prolific scorers. Gray has to be a poacher and sharp in the 6 yard box, or else what's the point?

He does work hard and actually gets into good positions quite often, but he's got no composure and is unlikely to improve at his age. I think Gray was seen along the same lines as Wilson, King, Long, Ings, Austin, Defoe etc. A player like that. They're are plenty of these in the Premier League, unfortunately, he's not at their level.

I think you are right but it's also partly due to the fact that our playing style is different. We are not focused on getting to the line and crossing balls into the box. Partly because there'd be little point !

You are probably right but do we have any stats that show how much less (fewer?) efficient he is in front of goal ? It's tempting to watch the MoTD highlights and assume these other guys convert most of the chances they get. It may be that the "Grayesque" misses don't make the final cut ?

Deeney is playing in a different way this year, he is being used much more now in link-up play and how the set up for this match was, he was used many times to lay short passes off and he was involved in some longer crossfield passes such as for the 2nd goal.
When he does get into position to get onto a cross it has not come to him such as when GD shot rather than crossed but we really don't commit enough players into the box at those moments.

I think there is rightly a greater emphasis on GD and RP to score themselves rather than create for others.

On Ref Watch Dermot Gallagher confirmed that if the ball came off Doucoure (which it clearly did) then it was onside. So the Cardiff second goal was valid according to him.

Looks like Warnock is going to be charge by the FA.

What I don't understand why he's making such a big deal over a yellow card offence. Sure, I get it if he's saying it should be a red, but just a yellow!! That's hardly a match changing incident. It's very strange.

If anyone has a right to being aggrieved over a rookie referee appointment it's Watford. In Madley's entire career he's only officiated twice in the Premier League.....both times at Vicarage Road. We also had rookie Simon Hooper at Southampton. So Watford, more than any other club, are being used as Guinea pigs.

Given the quality of the established refs, I'd be happy with a rookie every time.

My best guess is there's history between Warnock and Madley from the Championship and this was his way of sticking the knife in, in a very public way. Otherwise as you say why risk the fine to argue the toss about a yellow card?

  15. I thought Madley ref'd well and let the game flow.

As to the incident, some refs might have given a yellow but Colin is on cloud cuckoo if he thinks that had a major influence on the game. They lost because they have a dinosaur manager playing dinosaur football with a team of championship cloggers.

Worst team I've seen at the Vic in the prem.

Our football at the moment is just a delight to watch. I've never known us be able to break teams down as well as we are. Not sure why people are suggesting we wasted our possession and weren't creative enough. Look at the goals and the chances. The link play and movement is exceptional. It's the type of football Man City and Liverpool play. A poacher on the end of some of the chances and we could be a very good side. But even without that I'm loving watching us, even the frustrating defeats and draws are still miles more entertaining than most of the football I've seen since I've supported the team (very late 80's just after the glory years)

He's got two different motives. He's deflecting from a poor performance. Whilst also changing the script of what happened.

As someone on this thread already mentioned, the Sunday papers dedicated lots of their column space to Warnock and his 'misfortune'. They therefore presumably ran out of space to describe Cardiff's abysmal attempt at so-called 'football'.

Warnock, like a number of managers, constantly criticises the refs to pressure them and get favourable decisions further down the line. In Comms work, you are taught that you need to repeat a constant line of consistent messaging to break through into people's consciousness. Refs may now also have this in their subconscious when they make their next decision for/ against Cardiff.

So you can see the logic. Our manager refuses to comment about linesman/ ref decisions, and we get the same incorrect decisions week-in week-out.

Just hope they can find enough to stay up and fill one of the slots next season. Hudders and Burnley the same. Moneybags Fulham, Soton and Newcastle/CP would have been nice but other than Fulham, very unlikely.

Cardiff were by far the the poorest team we have played this season, too many Championship standard players. I was really impressed with our patience, we knocked the ball around and tried to find space and we kept the ball for long periods. I am shocked to see people saying we were wasteful I thought we were excellent and if it had been Man City or Arsenal playing some of that football people would have been sucking them off.

Colin says that Cardiff are too nice. I can't say whether that's true of the players as I wasn't able to go to the match, but it's certainly not true of Colin himself

Mind you, I've no problem with the patient approach...except if we're chasing the game in the last 5 minutes.

Yes, but it was against Mark Hughes, so it was the correct decision.

The patient approach was excellent football on Saturday when we controlled the game and went to a 3-0 lead. When we were at Leicester 2-0 down, watching us be happy to retain the ball and not cross the half way line it was very frustrating.
