Been very impressed with Penaranda so far in the U20s WC, as Steve Leo Beleck said, he's had a bunch of assists so far. Just got taken off against Japan (game currently in ET) and he looked eager, skilful with fantastic technique. A few downsides - his eagerness often leads to him giving away careless fouls for shirt pulls etc and as often is the case with someone young and with flair - he often tries to do too much and ends up losing the ball.

Venezuela scored late to go through to the quarter finals. 4th clean sheet out of 4 for their defence with Williams Velasquez playing at the heart of it. New Zealand or USA up next. Good to see Penaranda last 97 minutes after his fitness issues this season. Still doesn't look 100% to me which makes his performances all the more impressive.

    Do we own Velasquez too?

Yup - going to Italy to get a dodgy work permit - will then be frustrated by post brexit immigration rules and never see Watford Junction

Unlike Jim Ford who sang on 'Working My Way To L.A.'

"...but my hopes are high and so am I - you'd better look out California..."

I'm not particularly hopeful we'll see either Penaranda or Velasquez in the yellow of WFC.

So I'll follow Jim's advice and head on to Houston, Texas, with "...a roll of baloney & a hunk of cheese and a box of Saltine crackers..." to fill their void.

Another goal for Peñaranda! He has scored for Venezuela U20s in extra time in the quarter finals against USA. Venezuela currently 1-0 up therefore, with less than 20 mins to play.

Made up for his miss in normal time. He did play well though.

    Venezuela fully deserved the win

Penaranda's Venezuela into the u20 World Cup final after beating Uruguay on pens. He scored the first one. Could be set for a showdown with England later if they can get past Italy.

There's a lot of praise on social media for Penaranda from people that watched the game. Maybe if he gets in the team of the tournament or wins an individual award, it might help with the "Exceptional Talent" marker for a work permit? Not 100% sure of the rules on Spanish nationality but think it has to be 2 years continuous residence so his ill-fated loan in Udinese may have delayed the EU passport route.

I watched the game. Wasn't his best performance of the tournament, seemed a little nervous (like most of the team) at first, but most threats and good moments came through him. Uruguay are a very solid, defensive team and doubled up on him most of the time.

He's still a little raw but is a class above at this level. Very confident penalty up first as well.

    Penaranda vs. England later.

How do England consistently do well at youth teams and then fail?

    Agree with you mate

Personally it's the big clubs that snatch them up if they are not already at one. Then never play them but send them out on loan to some tinpot league while spending hundreds of millions during their crucial development years on other players for instance success. Then the youngsters who have all the potential in world remain stifled before eventually being sold. However the youngsters are now picky because they were on the books of a big club so only willing to join teams in the Prem or other top leagues for a stupid amount of money for their wages. Once at the new club they act like Billy Big Time and the new club soon realises that he is in fact lazy and will never meet his potential. Welcome Jerome Sinclair is basically what I'm saying.

Good question. Markoa$ beat me to it, but definitely the wages aspect factors heavily as well as over inflated transfer fees just because they're English which gives them the mistaken belief that they're a £20m player. Isn't Chalobah earning mental money at the moment? Hardly set the world alight at Chelsea.

    Hmm yeah makes sense.

It's amazing to think about Marcus Rashford for example. Imagine if he wasn't accidentally needed? How many other youngsters could've been that good and then failed?

Slightly off topic, but Man Utd fans slate Van Gaal for being rubbish yet I'm convinced that had Mourinho been manager at that time, Rashford wouldn't have gotten anywhere near the first team and as such would still be an unknown right now.

England don't help themselves with the under 21's setup. Lots of other nations still allow big talent to participate in u21 tournaments after they've played for the senior team - but it was announced today that Rashford won't be involved anymore, much to the annoyance of Boothroyd.

Rashford is an average striker who is a very fast runner. Which is all that matters these days to play for England.

I know its been said Chelsea were disappointed he didn't give youth much of a chance despite the success they had but as Marko says the big clubs and agents get greedy preying on the youngsters (and their families)

Liverpool got a transfer ban for poaching a goalie from Stoke at the age of 12!

These lads are never allowed to develop and grow.

You can bet if somebody like Mason or Dion Pereira had a good 6 months with us the money men would soon be after them.

    I think that's unfair.

England have not done as well at this level for a long, long time. They've consistently failed at U21 level at the past few tournaments, with the only recent success being at U17/16 level (and that was probably because of the England players developing physically earlier than their opponents, so faster, stronger etc.)

At U20 level, it's more leveled out. Make no mistake, getting to the U20 WC final is a great achievement, and there's nothing to suggest they can't kick on from here. The biggest barrier they will have to overcome though will be finding first team football. I hope that they win the WC, and that other clubs try to follow Spurs' model of promoting and playing homegrown talent.

Penaranda looks to have bags of potential, but not much use if you're not going to pass, run into danger or fluff your shot over the bar.

Interesting that he hasn't been sent out on loan yet. If he gets sent to Spain quick time then he could have a work permit by January be back for the second half of the season. Wouldn't even take up a slot in the squad due to his age.

    Maybe we've appealed?
