That's the weekly amount Manchester City are about to offer Zlatan Ibrahimovic according to the papers! Surely time for the authorities to step in and introduce a wage cap?

He is not worth half a mill a week. Probably one of the most over rated players around at the moment

Is anyone? It's a ludicrous amount to be banded about for a player wage. And the trouble is every time a player like this comes to the Premier League the rest of the 'stars' will want the same and before long it'll filter down to Watford and below. Before we know it half the Football League clubs will go bust. It's a joke.

That's the pertinent question, and the answer, in my opinion, is 'no'.

145 goals in 295 games since he left Malmo is an impressive goal to game ratio, and he has proved himself in every league he has played in. He may not do as much running round as tevez etc. but he is a guaranteed source of goals. Alot of people seem to dislike Ibrahemovic for no apparent reason.

Of course he is not worth that crazy amount of money a week, though!

Saw this in the papers today. No way it will happen and nobody is worth anywhere near that amount. Especially sh1tty Ibrahimovic.

Man City thinks he is worth that amount, if we go down the wage cap idea it is illegal under European law.

How does professional rugby get it to work then Doug? There must be a way.

Even if we put a wage cap, they'll put in massive game bonuses or something to get round it.

Must be something to do with the rules that they set up when their league was formed.

With a wage cap he would just be on £150k/week with a £350k appearance bonus.

I just hope for City's sake the owners are in the club for the long term...

This is the point though. Until several clubs go bust, we won't see any sort of realism penetrate into football.

Unfortunately, there is no motivation for the authorities to put a wage cap in place. Massive salaraies mean big headlines, means more hype, means more cash coming into the game (even though it's all wasted) means more money for the people who leach off of the game, whether as players or politicians.

Sure they are. All the owners have been Man City fans for life. Even when they were crap.

I'm pretty sure many of the rules in football (transfer fees, iron clad contracts) would be illegal under European law. It would just take someone to test it.

The EU can do that and in fact does do that. If they were illegal they'd have been challenged years back. In fact most of the modern football regulations have been drafted in consultation with the authorities.

Clubs will just release more percentage of the image rights which will act as a tax-free portion to their salary, and isn't included in the cap.

Isn't that how MLS clubs get round things if need be?
