Was he though? Or was he like a poor man's Ismaila Sarr in that he came up with moments of magic that people outside of the club will remember, mixed in with a lot of anonymity?

He absolutely wasn't. He scored a couple of goals from outside the area that certainly look good but that was it - he wasn't a regular goal threat, he wasn't dangerous on the ball, didn't create anything and was so amazing that he couldn't even play 30% of the available minutes for a team that was battling relegation.

    Good luck to the lad.

He looked promising in the early cameos but was certainly not in the appearances last season, that said it wasn't lack of effort, didn't seem shy of a shift just couldn't influence. Attitude seems good.

Seems to have the Quina affect, couple of worldies but not much else. I wish him the best, decent player, seems a decent lad as well, keep putting the work in and will earn a good living out of it.

Scored one or two good goals but in reality not sure he actually played that much as a starter ?

Judging by their fan forums and socials the majority of their fans wanted to sign him permanently this summer.

I would tend to favour their judgement over anyone else's with all due respect.

On the other hand he was rubbish for us even getting taken off as a sub v Hull which is why our fans will form a less positive view of him.

They probably liked him as he got a few goals (and good ones at that ) but don’t think Hungbo was a regular starter.

I mean Forest fans loved Davis and look how poor he was here.

Maybe it’s us that are the problem.

Probably as they know they're broke and can't be spending huge amounts, so a player that scored a couple of important goals for them for a small fee looks like a good deal. That's far from him "being amazing" for them! The reality is that he underperformed the league average stats for a Championship winger in most metrics. He'd be fine for League 1 team, but he's not Championship material.

Random question. Do you get credit in these stats for smashing in wordies or is it all based off expected outcomes? If the latter isn’t that a big unfair as it punishes players good at long shots?

If it's someone like Beckham or Ward-Prowse who you know are very good from long-range, I'm sure you can rely on them to exceed their xG, but for most players, they will revert to the mean (Hungbo has scored a few crackers for Ross County and Huddersfield, but it's still a small sample size)

You're right in that it does indeed punishes players who are good at long-shots! If someones consistently good at it then they'll way overperform their xG which will get noticed (for instance Hungbo scored 3 goals from 0.71 xG last season!) but it will have to be consistent over a long time period to really show up.

But the general consensus is that long shots are bad - even a player like Ruben Neves who's consistently labelled as a "long shot expert" scores very very goals from range - over the past 5 seasons he's taken 274 shots from outside the area that resulted in 9 goals (and 3 of those were direct free kicks) from 7.41 xG - so a slight overperformance but contributing 0.32 goals per season extra isn't really an amazing over-performance. Obviously purely hypothetical but how many xG/goals would they have created if he'd kept the ball and created better chances? Would that have created more than smashing it from range? Personally I think so but impossible to measure!

There's an interesting article I read (that I now can't find) showing the effect xG has had on the pitch and the average shooting distance in all the top 5 leagues has fallen quite drastically over the past 5 seasons as coaches/players get educated about xG

Nice one for quoting 'amazing for them' when I said quality.

My definition of quality is being able to change games with a moment of brilliance. He did that for them. Their fans liked him and wanted him to join them this summer.

Again, not sure how many times I have to say this, but I am going off of the general feel of Huddersfield fans reaction to his time there.

Bit of a strange definition in my view. Nordin Wooter had sparks of genius but would not have been “quality” as most games he did nothing.

About the same as Hungbo? Ran at Chelsea for Smart winner and had a stormer against Norwich the year after.

Unless I’ve forgotten all the games Hungbo won single handedly not sure about your odd response.

Hudders fans were so desperate to sign a player as 'quality' as him that since the news of him signing for Nuremberg broke yesterday, there's been one post on their forum player thread about him saying simply 'Signed for Nuremburg today on permanent deal' and no-one's bothered to reply.

It's entirely possible you were the one that posted it but read an article a couple of years ago about how Liverpool central defenders have been actively told not to rush out and close players down from 25 yards and to give the keeper a clear view of the ball. They showed some examples of Van Dijk taking some really unconventional positions that encouraged low probability shots that Allisson had a clear view of from long way out. Thinking being, better to allow a 1% chance shot than rush out and allow a ball to be slipped into the space behind you or the attacker to burst pass.

Weighing up the correct time to impart this information to the guy that often sits behind me in the Rookery and nearly bursts a blood vessel screaming '******* close them daaaaahn' every time someone's 35 yards from our goal.

Well I suppose if you don’t close someone down 35 yards out, they have all the time in the world to deliver a killer pass into the box, ….they won’t necessarily shoot.
Ps it’s not me in the Rookery !
