I know there is the off button and I have actually used it on a few occasions recently because of the thing I have mentioned , which is such a shame as normally like watching these programs, but this misguided "Woke Agenda" is all to often spoiling them for me at present.

Well, if you think it's 'woke' (silly expression that says more about the person using it than the person it's aimed at) how is it you want the subject matter dealt with, or would you prefer it was not dealt with at all?

This is key. I think I know where TVOR is coming from on this. I have absolutely no problem with dramas incorporating political messages into their content if it feels natural and believable and this comes down to the writing. I don’t watch Station 19 but I do watch its stablemate, Grey’s Anatomy. The writing on this used to be excellent and it managed to incorporate issues such as abortion and racism into its storylines which felt believable and made you think - an example I remember was when a black boy came into the hospital after being shot by a (white) policeman as he was climbing into the window of his own house after forgetting his key. The episode ended with one of the main characters sitting her son down and talking him through how to behave if ever stopped by the police. It was way cleverer than I’ve made it sound and I remember it actually made me cry and do a lot of soul searching as a parent of privileged white kids. Unfortunately, the show’s creator is no longer involved in the writing and the standard has deteriorated enormously. So, in the latest series for example, characters - literally out of nowhere and apropo of nothing - suddenly launch into a 3 minute political monologue. There are no nuances and the viewer is no longer treated as being intelligent enough to work out what the message is - it is spelt out to them as if they were a child. One example was a character claiming that the world wasn’t taking covid seriously because it affected BAME minorities, which isn’t even true (the former part, not the latter). The political messages feel clunky and unnatural and, as a result, the viewer can feel they are being preached to. I am sticking with Grey’s but mostly out of habit and past loyalty - and because this season has had a number of cameos by characters from early seasons when the programme was still good. If Station 19 has gone the same way as Grey’s, then I sympathise TVOR.

Off topic but has to be said
There is an article on the BBC website about Sony writing off artists debts
Then went on to say that black artists are particularly affected (by poor royalty rates)
    Which is woke ********
    That is woke .
Divide and rule nonsense from the affluent in order to maintain the status quo
Not lazy . Just my two bob observations
Because have you ever met a poor woke w***er?

He’s at liberty to say so if that’s what he meant. All we have at the moment is that he doesn’t like it.

This is the ‘Things you hate’ thread after all.

I get what you mean to the extent that this will probably be an issue that affects working class artists across the board, white, black and any other.

But there have been many notorious cases of black artists being royally ripped off over the years. The song Why do fools fall in love is a classic example. It took a thirty year battle for the writers of that song (one of the most played ever on radio Worldwide) to get paid. The fact that they were black in an industry completely owned and contracted by white people was almost certainly a factor. They were guys churning out tunes for white companies to often provide to white artists.

You don’t have to be a ‘woke warrior’ to acknowledge that white artists have been getting rich on black music for the entire era of pop, from the Stones to Eminem. Better to share the wealth out a bit.

Commentators with bizarre reactions to known world class players.

Denmark v Belgium. De Bruyne and Hazard are subbed on. Commentator starts verbally sweating.

“big boys are on now!”. Yes we all know they are two of the best players in the world. Even rugby bloke who only watches final tournaments.

    “different tempo now!” Yes obviously

At this point both players do a largely irrelevant showboat in centre of pitch. Commentator climaxes.

“OH STOP IT! BOTH OF YOU”

    FFS.

This guy knowingly did something ridiculously life-threateningly dangerous after his second kid was just born, dies, and then a GoFundMe gets set up for the family and raises over 40k in no time at all.

There are so many people who face hardship through no fault of their own and get no aid whatsoever, but some yahoo does an utterly stupid and irresponsible thing, dies for it, and people throw money at his family.

    I find it profoundly irritating.

Have to say I don’t agree. By that reasoning no motor racing driver or professional cyclist would ever breed.

Julian Alaphilippe, World Champion, due to become a father last week was descending at 100km per hour down a Swiss mountain at the weekend clad only in Lycra with two thin strips of rubber between him and the tarmac.

Some people’s work is very risky.

People who have no interest in football using last night’s borefest as a reason to patronise those who do. For example, I got this text from a female friend at the final whistle “I am no footie fan and watching a game like that reminds me why”. Oh **** off - as if watching England games = watching “footie”.

Agreed Moose however Michael Jackson never got screwed over by royalty rates as far as I can tell
Prince did, however, although he was rich enough to make his point
The Undertones were ripped off by Seymour Stein and to my certain knowledge they are not black
Bay City Rollers " where did the money go ?" documentary . A good watch.
Black white pink or purple . Have all been done over by the music industry
" Don't be a divisive ****" is a great documentary that is yet to be made

I’m always going to prefer saying something to pretending there is no difference, whatever exceptions there are.

Seems to me this call to not be divisive is a call to be meek. Let’s not mention black poverty, because others may be poor. It’s the narrative of the bosses.

Black people making demands is not a threat to the working class. It’s a reason to find what we have in common and demand change for all. I’ve never heard a black campaigner demand no one else gets a slice.

Is your point that Davy shouldn’t have written his first post or it should go unchallenged?

I liked the story of when the Undertones had to do Top of the Pops for the first time with Teenage Kicks. They had rarely been out of Derry in their lives, let alone on a plane, let alone in a hotel.

This caused consternation in their families about what to get the boys, who were mostly 18, 19. Apparently their aunties all popped round with new pyjamas for them.

If you look at that performance on YouTube the difference between them and the heavily marketed artists of today couldn’t be more marked. Saw them a few times. Always a great night. :)
