Much rather we keep Hughes and Capoue, and therefore we don’t need any new additions

I’m sure Gino would be delighted with this.

As long as you are willing to pay the difference in wages, transfer fees and would dedicate yourself to ensuring Hughes and Capoue give 100% despite playing in an inferior league they’ve effectively been trapped in...

While I know it’s not realistic, if I were in charge, I’d be tempted to say A.) You were part of the team that took us down, so now play your part in taking us back. And/Or B.) If you planned to jump ship, you should have negotiated a relegation clause.

If we sign him, I’ll predict now he’ll actually look really good for about 5 games, before the shine wears off and he gradually reverts back to being the crap midfielder we expect him to be. Like most of our signings.

I get the instinct, but we need to be confident that turning down bids from larger clubs and keeping unhappy players, (who could barely be bothered to play for us in the EPL), is a likely recipe for promotion.

I think our rejection of Everton’s Doucoure bid was a key component in our relegation. Everton offered a decent fee and Doucoure was clearly ready to move on. However we rejected it for the wrong reasons (that we were annoyed that they unsettled Silva). In the end we had an expensive passenger, with no one to replace him with.

My preference is to bring players in that have something to fight for, and let weak-minded players who would rather be elsewhere to **** off. The fact that it would save millions off our wage bill would help too.

Keeping players for the wrong reasons (to punish them for our demise) isn’t going to create the team atmosphere/ mentality required for promotion.

We'd done the Richarlison deal with them after the Silva thing though. I can't imagine that was a real issue with us declining their bid for Doucoure.

I don’t disagree with most of that, but some of it is just conjecture too. As UEA says, we had already done business with them for Richarlison - I really doubt we turned down good money from them on a principle we had already broken. I’d say it’s far more likely that Everton didn’t offer enough money. Or we had just been to a Cup Final and flirted with 7th and the club kept Doucoure as they felt he was huge in building on that.

I suspect it’s two things - the money offerred wasn’t enough, and that Doucoure’s deal with the club was he could leave for CL/Europa football. Everton didn’t offer that.

But we digress - we broadly agree on the point raised!

I could imagine the Will Hughes would still play his socks off, it's the kind of player he is, Capoue not so sure about, but should he stay, I'd like to believe we would be a top of the table team, and winning is fun, so he might just get on board the happy train with the rest of the team.

Or are they being very cunning. Keep the expensive passengers, show them and other teams we are okay playing hard ball, at least for half a season. Maybe its the decision they have made, you get higher prices in the winter sales period as teams are more desperate. Then during that period only play them if they try, don't try when rotated in and you don't get to play, we use a different more hungry player more suited to the championship. Doesn't do much for the players reputation being fully fit but not good enough for a championship team or squad does it, particularly the less young ones. They also have the albatross of relegation around their neck, and share part of that responsibility. Sure you've had a few good seasons, a nice clips reel from 2 years ago but that smell of relegation and failure still hangs on you as do the questions about your poor attitude. May motivate them to actually fight for the cause.
Sure some might get very pissed off with it and they can push for their move in January but again you look less appealing as a barely played disruptive influence.

They took us down they can damn well stay here with us. hit them where it hurts their future earnings.
They go from premiership regular starters to championship part timers who aren't even playing regularly. The salaries they can command at future clubs decreases with each passing month. That big break at a top 6 club becomes more elusive as bigger clubs start to lose quite as much interest and they become more of a gamble.

Agree with this, if they want a move the best way to put themselves in the shop window, is to be showing great attitude and playing like a footballing God.

In the back of my head, I thought the club admitted that we were hesistant to deal with Everton over Richarlison, but gave in because the offer was too good to refuse. I thought we were charging a bit of an Everton premium as there was a hesitancy to sell to them. But maybe I'm reinventing the situation in my mind.

It doesn't really matter anyway. As Burnsy states, my point was that keeping an unhappy player in the squad (either due to stubbornness or for the sake of a few million) is generally detrimental to success.

That Davies thing is nonsense. The Twitter site it's quoting has less than 75k followers. Nothing in it

He has been playing excellently for Everton and completely bossed the Liverpool midfield yesterday.

Not good enough for us though.

If the general feeling on this board is against the signing of an established Premier League player under 30 we should definitely sign him.

Would be a good afddition, but think he's a bit "lightweight" and probably needs some toughening up alongside Zinc before he can play for the 'orns against the likes of Wycombe!

Tom Davies is very good at protecting the ball with his strength.

Even as a joke, it’s a terrible comparison.
