Which is fine of course. And if you told me you'd taken your mum to Bournemouth beach yesterday I'd probably call you stupid given what we know about the virus. But that doesn't mean everyone else who did is stupid or wrong or completely dismissive of the risk.

Well certainly policy considerations other than purely what is necessary to eradicate the virus have to influence the government's thinking. While I'm sure that means some of the proposals made by SAGE experts are dismissed as unworkable or politically unpalatable, I've seen nothing to suggest they would represent something as a low risk activity unless it genuinely was.

I was near there yesterday.. a few groins east in Southbourne.. it was busy yes, but there was plenty of space around everyone and that camera shot definitely shortens the view angle. People were (who I saw) all being aware and kept distance.

There has been a lot of foul play by the papers using zoom lens photography to squash the depth of field and make people appear closer together than they really were. Looks better for the papers "shock horror" headlines....

Loads of examples of that, they’re all over Twitter and this is a good one:

All the media outlets have an agenda, even if it’s to wind people up so they post stuff in the comments, share the story etc.

Not really it's far more to do with closed/shuttered windows and the lack of extra ventilation. All that condensation makes a lovely rest area for airborne particles.

Just to note, I'm not personally enraged by the photo - I'm more wondering what the general level of hypocrisy about the rules might be amongst the population, and was also curious what people on here would make of it.

  8. Well I have to hold my hands up and say I’ve been exercising more than once a day since lockdown began, the dog gets walked am and pm

  9. UEA_Hornet

I'm afraid that's worse than Dominic Cummings. While you have not broken the regulations, you've gone against explicit government guidance asking you to only exercise once per day.

Please call all the major networks immediately to arrange a press conference in your garden. And yes, the dog will have to face the music too.

I believe he should be fine. He can claim the first walk was a safeguarding or welfare issue for his dog, with the second walk being to test one or both of their eyesight.

I needed to wear a contact lens in one eye when driving. It meant that one eye was better at long distances, and one was better for short distances and my brain would apparently work out which eye was prevalent at a particular time. He said that it would get better over time, and there were also different options when it came to coping with the glare of street lighting. Consequently, he said, I would be "experimenting" over 12 months driving, with regular visits to the opticians before I actually got things right.

Have we returned to the Middle-Ages as what is going on right now with Dominic Cummings is tantamount to actual Witch Hunts IMO. Even the clergy have joined in, and it was usually them that had the final say by condemning the unfortunate ladies who were accused of witchcraft to be burned at the stake.

I reckon the clergy have seen an opportunity in the DC Witch-Hunt, and are trying to revive their influence over the people that they used to have back in those dim and dark Medieval Times :D

Was DC Witch-Hunt the Durham Police officer who spoke to the Cummings?

Many politicians used to be journalists so don’t feel too sorry for them. BJ was sacked from 2 jobs as a journalist for lying. I agree that the whole Cummings thing has gone overboard - but if he had resigned then this story would start to go away. If this was some nobody they would have been sacked, but we all know Cummings is more than a ‘special advisor’. It’s interesting that the government is now not reviewing fines given up where the reason given is childcare - further supporting the view that different rules are applied to the elite.
The government and BJ specifically has lost credibility by many. But I am surprised by many that support BJ no matter what. I genuinely think BJ could walk up to the despatch box, drop his pants and waive his **** in the air and people (including some on this forum) will still look to excuse him

it is no longer about what he’s done, which is relatively minor. Its the attempted gaslighting of the public by suggesting it was us that misunderstood the rules despite having ‘stay home’ rammed down our throats, and being repeatedly told grandparents couldn’t look after children, the arrogance of his explanation and the sheer farce of his version of events.

Another batch of ONS figures released yesterday. Excess deaths continue to trend down, which isn't a surprise given the daily figures announced by the government:

    https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopula...nglandandwalesprovisional/weekending15may2020

And the BBC reported on ONS figures showing:

The government really needs to start promoting this message to under 45s now, to build confidence in them to return to work, the high street and send their kids to school in the coming months.

And finally tomorrow brings the next update for the testing sample to find out how much Covid there is in the community, which in turn feeds into the Argh rating.

I'm not sure who the "he" is in this story who was telling you all these things, but as an ex-officer, I'm sure you know that any problems with eyesight must be immediately notified to the DVLA, right? So that a doctor can examine you and determine whether you're safe to drive? And that failure to do so would invalidate your insurance?

Of course it's the same with the 'blackouts' that both the Cumquats said they were suffering from. Not supposed to drive until medically examined.

No doubt if you'd have pulled them over in your jam sandwich, you'd have had the cuffs on the pestilent pair before they could start bleating their excuses and a tow truck on the way to take the Land Rover to the crusher.

I can assure you that fine tuning the sharpness in a drivers eyesight does not necessarily mean they couldn't read a number plate from 20 metres. You are getting confused with the minimum requirements with eyesight. But thanks for your valuable contribution.

  29. Yeah, shut up Clive. Cummings was fine tuning his ocular perspicuity.

Obviously there are certain economic and social concerns to weigh against the spread of the virus, but I’m really starting to think most governments know something we don’t about what happens next. If you read this article is just general relaxation across the whole of Europe over the next month or so:

    https://www.theguardian.com/world/2...ope-states-take-small-steps-towards-normality

I’m starting to think we were all scared absolutely witless to comply (rightly so) with the lockdown, but now things will actually be ok. I don’t think there will be a second spike, not until the winter at least.

It's a difficult balancing act though. Scare people witless and they refuse to return to work, retreat into their bunkers and don't send their kids to school. Tell them that they will be barely touched by the virus and they will ignore all the advice and turn up en masse to shops, beaches, parks etc, sod any social distancing. It was mainly the under 45s in all the "packed beaches" shockers at the weekend.

I think in years to come once the final tallies on all fronts are known the concept of lockdown will be written off as a illegitimate and ineffective tactic, never to be repeated so bluntly.

The decline in community transmission began here before the lockdown measures properly kicked in. Social distancing and hand washing were working.

Well, we’re not allowed to mention Sweden because they have more deaths than their neighbours. But they didn’t lockdown and still have declining death and infection rates.

Every European country is looking at returning to what is a lot closer to normality than lockdown over the next month or so, which is odd if there is a remote chance of it blowing up in their faces.

Either way something doesn’t quite add up. Regardless, clearly hysteria over people on beaches is not necessary.

But were insufficient. All the graphs tell you so. Where would they have gone in the UK with no drastic action? Sorry to keep on keeping on, but the key worker deaths were intolerable. Our outcomes with a lockdown intolerable. They could only have been worse.

It will be interesting to fully enquire what worked well and why. So for Sweden, it has had a more effective response than the UK, probably because the action it took was early and because its population and industry will do things that are suggested to them without being ordered. They also had a Government not so keen on mixed messages. Even so, it was not as effective as its early and cautious neighbours.

If there is a second wave a full lockdown should not be required if we have track and trace in place with social distancing measures. The lockdown should be a one off, but sadly our circumstances and lazy approach meant we had little choice.

Once again this focuses far too much on death rates. Clearly, under 45s are very unlikely to die because they are younger but that doesn't mean they can't get sick and need treatment. And it certainly doesn't mean they can't be carriers and spreaders of the virus.
