Should they do away with Boxing Day fixtures.
I can see both sides of the argument.
When I lived at home with my parents in Oxhey, I used to love, after all the festivities, to get out of the house, and walk in the fresh air, through Oxhey park and on towards the ground to watch us play a home game.
If you had asked me then, then I would have said, no do not do away with the Boxing day match.
However, now that times have changed somewhat, in later life, I now find myself invited to Dinner, and drinks in the evening with close friends, and a couple of them coming from afar, that I do not see that often.
Now I have not missed a single home game since promotion to the Premier league, and for that matter, not for a good time before.
I will go, for the lunchtime meal, and I will take my season ticket with me,and will make up my mind whether to go to the match or not.
I will be in Milton Keynes, there are no trains, so I would have to drive, then of course this means that I would be the only one in the house, that could not have a drink.
Also bear in mind that all away fans have to travel by means other than rail.
I admit, that if I could change the Chelsea match to a normal day, I certainly would.

They are great, it's a perfect excuse to avoid all that nonsense you mention.

I love them but 745 kickoff is ridiculous.

******* love it, it's part of the festive break - even better that it's an evening kick off and on TV.

National rail journey planner says there's trains running from MK to Watford on boxing day?

Love Boxing Day matches but not at 730pm. 1pm was ideal

They lost their appeal when they became just any old fixture and not a local derby.

I hated that Boxing Day derby in ‘79 for years afterwards.

Not according to ticket purchase page on https://www.londonnorthwesternrailway.co.uk/.
Next available train from MK is 05.48 on the 27th.
I wish you where right though, as the hostess has an eye for a very fine bottle of port, and there will be plenty of beer too.

Thanks at least that we don't have a match on Christmas day as well.

I love the tradition of Boxing Day football, but then I’m someone who watches games at home on TV / MOTD etc. Only ever been to one game on Boxing Day, can’t remember the year but it was the ‘Boxing Day massacre at craven cottage’ Can still see Hayles now smirking at us during their goal celebrations

    12pm/3pm kick-offs - no problem, part of a tradition.

    5pm/7:45om kick-offs - ridiculous and not traditional.

Should be the one day of the season where every game is played on the same day at the same time IMO.

  13. Just the one day?
I'm a Saturday-3pm-for-every-game traditionalist myself, but would accept a small sprinkling of Tuesday night games throughout the season.

Evening games ok if you live locally, not so great if like me you don't

  15. Same as. Have to work the next day so driving back to Sheffield at 10pm on boxing Day is gonna be *****.

  16. Wow I remember that well. The chill coming off the Thames into our stand was one of the coldest feelings I've ever experienced away.

Mid day kick offs made more sense on that day.

Personally giving players an extra day with their family’s wouldn’t be a bad idea. However the downside is squeezing the fixture in elsewhere and keeping Deeney off the booze at the party.

Getting rid of just one of the international breaks could be the answer to that one.

Absolutely freezing! I think we had Carlton Palmer playing for us? Not sure if he's the one I remember for good or bad reasons!?

I love the boxing day fixture, it is the only time that I am able to watch the game with all my family members who are Watford fans but live all over the place. The boxing day game has become a bit of a Christmas tradition in my family.

As many games over Xmas as possible please. Anything to divert attention from the enforced boring family get-togethers where conversation runs dry after 45 mins and the rest of the day is spent in silence watching some rubbish on tv while various small children scream and climb all over you. I stopped enjoying Xmas at about 20 odd when the net profit i had historically made over the period became breakeven and then turned to loss.....

Having never lived in the Watford area getting to the boxing day fixture was always frustrating. Could never understand why there wasn't better public transport that day when BR must have known how many people wanted to travel to see games.. or why there was a full fixture list on a day they knew there was limited public transport.
Best Boxing Day match memory must be the 2-0 win at kenilworth Road when the away fan ban was in place in 86. Can't recall how i got there but i do recall i was on my own.. to keep as incognito as possible!

NB I guess many people will know this but up until the mid 60's Christmas Day was a regular fixture day. Normally a local derby where possible and often with the reverse fixture on Boxing Day.

I've just this second noticed it's a 7.30pm kickoff! Somehow that had slipped under my radar until now.

At least the desperate shoppers would have left town by then, but 7:30 is a ridiculous KO on Boxing Day.

  27. If I decide to go I'll be leaving about 9pm no matter what the score.

If anybody boos me then I may cry a little.

They appreciate us by agreeing to the kickoff being at 7:30pm and not allowing us the chance to get hammered with family we hate in the evening.

I'm not going for it anyway. I have no idea what this stuff is, anyway I don't own a Nintendo, so I certainly don't need a switch for it.

I seem to remember in the old days before decimalisation evening kick offs were always 730pm, then for some unknown reason they got moved back to 745pm! Anyone know why? Or was it just to give everyone 15 minutes longer to get there!
