Sterling display of moronic idiocy.

You don’t know me as a person so you simply cannot state I don’t have the capability to grasp anything about life.

As many have said, if you believe that Raheem Sterling having a fun tattooed on his leg will cause even one kid to pick up a gun and kill someone, it’s you that’s not grasping the issue.

Is it a weird image to honour his dad? Sure. But it’s no more than that.

I don't know you as a person, that's clear. I do know enough though now.

Quick straw poll...those defending Sterling are either male, single, no kids and/or Brexiters. Make your position known.

I’m staunchly remain, male, no kids, engaged. Relevant how? I don’t see how gender has anything to do with it. I don’t have my own kids but I have them in my extended family so of course I have empathy and as I have said many times on this thread, I have worked directly with people who this type of thing affects. I also don’t see how my view on the EU or my marital status is any of your business or relevant again, but for the sake of your argument, I’m happy to tell you.

Im married with kids and see no reason to criticise Sterling. In fact it might highlight to kids that shooting should only be on a football pitch, what he uses his leg for, but you'd argue a camera would be more appropriate.

I shoot a lot of wildlife with my big camera. Never killed anything though nearly myself a few times trying to get a better shot (like car diagonally across road to get falcon on kill with coach coming). I should get a tattoo.

I work in an industry which changes young people’s lives and at a company which is currently facing government pressure to filter the content it puts out as well as the government applying pressure to YouTube to delete said content. I come into contact with the kids most likely influenced on a daily basis and trust me when I say this recent epidemic is not Raheem Sterling’s fault.

This topic is way deeper than a few sentences but for starters, the 50 that have died so far in London the majority is knife crime not gun crime which I think is relevant.

I would also blame social media, the closing of youth clubs, the lack of strong parenting, the lack of good strong male teachers at school as well as many other things before I would even come close to blaming Sterling.

The guy is a Premier League winner who’s had a fantastic season but you’d never hear it. He went Greggs, front page. He went Primark, front page. He buys a Range Rover, front page. He goes for breakfast, front page. The witch hunt on Raheem is disgusting and one wonders why someone who journalists such as Henry Winter describe as a lovely, reserved guy is being brought down whilst Jamie Vardy is considered a national hero?

Couldn’t agree more - apart from the insinuation that Vardy should be the type they should focus on. Not aware of him doing anything wrong either. Guy comes from humble beginnings and made good. A national newspapers vendetta on gun crime and gang culture shouldn’t be focussed on footballers. Unless that isn’t what their vendetta is about...hmmm.

I don’t believe they should focus on anyone but a man who has been convicted of assault and been caught on camera being racist would be an easier target than constantly bringing down Sterling & Alli no? Even if the latter does come across as a bit arrogant.

Without taking this off on a tangent, Vardy’s assualt charge, which came when he was 20, was as a result of him defending his friend who is deaf. And any form of racism is abhorrent - but what I will say is the word Vardy has admitted using is a word that many won’t even class as racist, or at least won’t even realise the history of the word. I agree that doesn’t make it right however.

I’m not really sure the comparison with Vardy is needed. This isn’t a case of ‘well if they are insistent on going after someone needlessly, they should go for the one with the previous...’.

To me this is a story more about current journalistic standards being in the gutter due to a mixture of ‘Free Press’ and social media. Stories don’t need context or proof these days before they are written. They can be plastered over 4 pages with smears and flammatory headlines and then apologised for with a footnote on Page 38 two months later when they are found to be garbage.

Do I like The S*n? No. I think it should been put out of business years ago. But I would have far less issue with their story had they done the journalistic thing and approached Sterling for his side of the story first - and then referenced it in larger scale the day after. Rather than approaching victims parents first, bringing up bad memories for them, and making Sterling guilty before even being given a right of reply.

I’m a big defender of Free Press. But it has to be used responsibly, rather than a soundbite journalists can hide behind to print whatever they want about whoever they want.

I agree with you, maybe I’m not explaining my point properly.

The fact Sterling & Alli, two kids with Afro / Caribbean heritage are constantly heckled by red tops makes me wonder if it’s more than a coincidence..

Dele Alli got away with his behaviour for a long time before the press started deservedly calling him a cheat.

The press have had it in for Sterling ever since he committed the heinous crime of leaving Liverpool for a club of less or similar named stature. He claimed it was to win things (which he has achieved) but of course, in their eyes he is young and likes to show off, so it was for money and their readers are easy to convince of such a thing.

Personally, I think Dele Alli being filmed with prostitutes is light years worse than a guy having a tattoo of a gun under his sock.

I don't recall the level of outrage on here about that.

I am not sure why Sterling gets grief. He seems a good guy.

Being a pedant but Dele Alli heritage isn’t from the Caribbean as far as I know?

    Massive non story.

I’m not Sterling’s biggest fan by any stretch but can’t help feeling like he gets an awful lot of stink from our beloved friends in the media.

You know what would be daft - if he scored and did some sort of gun celebration (like Robbie Keane used to do) or show off his tattoo.

Now that really would get the haters goings...

Mind you we'd probably all be stunned to a standstill if Sterling did find the net!

    Why is it racist?

I don't think they are treating him well, but I wasn't aware of racist comments.

  23. Burnsy

There doesn’t need to be direct racist comments for there to be an undercurrent of racism about his treatment.

    I agree.

If the media is only targeting, for example, black players with general criticism, then that would be racist. That clearly isn't happening in this case. So there must be other reasons why Sterling's treatment is deemed to be racist.

  25. Burnsy

He is the only one who is targeted with false stories regularly by the same paper about his family and lifestyle. It’s fine that you don’t agree but many feel there is a darker undertone to it.

I'm not saying I dont agree, before this particular tattoo issue (and I defended Sterling on that issue), I had read the criticism of Sterling, but it hadn't occurred to me that it was racist, I am just asking for the racist element to be explained as I may have missed something.

Are you saying that when a newspaper criticises/targets someone who is black, then it is likely to be due to racism? Would those "many" feel that if the newspaper did the same to a white person, that would that also be racist?

    Just asking!

I put the word in brackets with a question mark because there's no clear reason why the gutter press have singled him out. It's more than just a black person being criticised, with Sterling it's a witch hunt, hence the accusation by some there might be a racist agenda behind it, however institutional/subconscious it might be - although I suspect they know exactly what they are doing!

It's not because the press are being racist it's because you don't do that to Liverpool and get away with it.

As we know, "some people" will jump at the chance to call anything racist, without any juatification.

Its not racism if the police search a black man. It is racist if they only do it because hes black, its not possible to tell in isolation. Are the police nearly all white? Are the police constantly searching the same man without justifcation, are there white men who are also routinely searched?

    Are the press mostly white?
Are they continually picking on Sterling?
Are they justified in any way about Sterling?
Are they doing the same to any white player?

You can take each gutter article in isolation and say it isnt explicitly racist, and if your ignorant, in the same breath have a pop at those who call it out.

Doesn't Wilshire get a hard time as well? At least he used to when he was at Sterling's point of high potential. I'd agree Sterling has done nothing wrong to attract adverse press criticism but I don't think he's the only one.

I don't disagree that others get a hard time but they don't seem to get the focus on their family or wealth half as much as Sterling IMO.
