Udinese Calcio - Season 2017/18

  1. Bad miss by Bologna's Verdi - the guy we were linked with a while ago, hopefully ending that rumour.

1-0 Full time for last match of a disappointing season.
The good thing is that next year we'll have our 24th consecutive season in serie A, which is an amazing record for the team of a small city.
Also, with the two final wins we've climbed a few positions and end as 13th in table with 40 points.

Yet it's the fifth consecutive season where we end in the right side of the table (and with some relegation risks too) and such a long spell in mediocrity never happened before under the Pozzo's reign.
We really hope for something better than that.

Ah yes, there was also the arrival at Mount Zoncolan which is rightly famous (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monte_Zoncolan) with 1200m to climb in 10 km before the finish line.

Well done! Pleased that turned out for Udin ok, even the though maths was always in your favour today.

Seems like similar repeated patterns emerging/also feelings with both the respective Watford & Udinese fans in terms of how they're run (& I believe applies to Granada under their stewardship before selling to the Chinese). None of this is coincidence.

Both clubs largely run in a similar & sensible template type fashion, that give or take should be sufficient enough to sustain their investments in the highest leagues, with no grand statements of intent or promises to the fans about ambition once settled in the top tier. Like any model has both its plusses & minuses. On balance I have to support it.

Being realistic, I can't see how smaller provincial type -20K gate clubs (we are penultimate in the league one above Bournemouth in terms of 2018 attendances) like ourselves can aspire to be that much more, even though I fully understand the notion & the need for fans to dream. It all comes down to the fanbase/marketability/numbers at the end of the day. It could be really so much worse, try getting out of the Championship each year which is our most likely other scenario, that is one dog mess of a league which I for one have no interest in anymore.

Thought of the day; Just be happy with what you've got!

Didn’t Duxbury give Europa League as a target?

I reckon the cups now become a big deal.

WFC are getting used to the Prem. Simply being on the same pitch as @rsenal is no longer a thrill.

    ‘Survive’ isn’t a rallying cry.

    Where’s the sizzle?

GT noted that fan support dwindled around years 4-5 of Div One.

    What’s the Pozzo vision?

    A beast.

Yates looks like he’s riding this Giro in a motorbike.

Any Pozzo apercus for us for next season?

Have a look at the final standings in Serie A..can someone explain if they see anything wrong with 13 & 14th place? Don't understand how Chievo are above on what looks like an inferior goal difference?

Serie A doesn't take goal difference into account when teams are level on points. It goes down to the head-to-head record between the teams in question.

Same reason why Lazio were pipped to 4th by Inter due to the latter's win last night at the Stadio Olimpico.

Hey, do not misunderstand me. I am certainly NOT one of those fans (in abundance lately, unfortunately) who complain about almost everything about the Pozzo's.
I fully understand that, for a team of our size, just to stay in top tier for 24 consecutive years is the equivalent of several trophies for a larger club.

I always become angry when I read somefools writing "If we had kept Sanchez after our third place we could have aimed to win serie A" ... yes of course ... it is really easy to "keep" your best player when the best team in the world wants him and offers 5x the wages he has at Udine, that without saying that Udinese has to mantain on par its budget and is NOT managed by a happy-money-thrower sheik or tycoon but by sensible managers.

That said, it is a fact that the last 5 years were the most depressing in Pozzo's reign at Udine.
Watch the history on https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Udinese_Calcio#Cronistoria (understandable even if in Italian, I think).
In last 20+ years, never we saw 5 consecutive years always in the right side of table, without even a decent run in national cup.
Not asking too much, not pretending to be next year's Italy's Leicester.
I would just like Udinese to be again the Queen of the midgets!

Do you, or other Udinese fans think that the fall of your club has anything to do with your owners' involvement in the English league?

Perhaps their priorities have moved or perhaps they don't have the concetration/resources for both.

    An inspiring rallying cry!

Or mission statement (for the business types).

Good shout but I hope inspiring rallying cries escaped the 101 treatment.
