What words used overly frequently in the game really grind your gears?

For me the worst has to be the phrase 'in this moment' a popular one among foreign managers it seems and I'm not totally sure why but something about it really annoys me.

Not keen on the use of 'the group'

Also 'getting a result'...... there is always a result

Transition what the f is this......... in my day it was getting the ball forward

‘I can’t speculate on the future of my position’ is one a lot of managers use. oddly, they end up being sacked a few weeks later.

‘Whipping Boys’ is the other one. Watford were known as them in the 99/00 season but we still raised a few brows.

“(Insert name of stadium) is a difficult place to come to”, especially when it patently isn’t as in “The Stadium of Light is a difficult place to come to”.

oh, and a pocket is a small pouch either on the inside or outside of various articles of clothing designed to carry small objects. You're welcome.

Well, he was entitled to go down there, so for me it’s a clear penalty.

    Or

He had to bring him down there. Took one for the team. Good play.

I tuned into the Holland vs England match last night for a couple of minutes. We were in or around our 18 yard box passing between defenders and the keeper before hoofing the ball 70 yards up the pitch at which point the commentator said something along the lines of ‘England really pass it around well to work it up the pitch’. I switched the TV off.

    From radio commentary:

"Such and such a team are playing from right to left".

What does that even mean, unless you happen to know where in the stadium the commentator is sitting?

  13. The use of the past perfect instead of the past participle. "He has gave the ball away too cheaply" "He has went to ground too easily".

Describing a players run as "scampering forward" he's not a bloody puppy.
Saying "he can hang in the air"...No he can't, he jumps, gravity takes over, he comes down at the same speed as every other human being.
Entitled to go down...No that's called diving.
This one is an absolute 6 pointer...No, 3 is still the maximum.
    Referees assistant...Bloody lino.

When any player does something good, ie. a raking 50 yard pass, a tap-in from 2 yards or a ball winning tackle, it makes me want to throw old people under a bus when we're told "That's what he does." We know! We just saw him do it!!

It doesn't really apply to football but in cricket, say, after a batsman has elegantly driven the ball for four the commentator will say "What a marvellous cricket shot." Why add the sports name? It was hardly a great basketball shot! The same happens in tennis, baseball and other bat/racquet based sports. Hrrrmph.

Using the expression 'grinds my gears'. It's not even a real expression, just something Peter Griffin used on one episode only.
