Terrible scenes in Finsbury Park, one dead, several injured.

Why anyone wants to kill innocent people as "revenge" or because they have different beliefs, is beyond my understanding. It is just sickening. Totally sick, with not one ounce validity, anywhere.

Sadly there will always be such morons now who will "seek revenge" - its very depressing to have all this so close to home.

Absolutely disgusting, how can someone do that I will never know. The man supposedly drove from South Wales to do this.

That's now four terrorist attacks in a year.

This is awful to hear . Only 1/2 mile from my house .

Sounds like some brave actions from worshippers to jump and capture the culprit.

We must remain united against these truly evil people so they don't undermine our open and accepting society .

Does seem extraordinary the actions of the Iman. Whilst we might not care so much about the perpetrator he prevented the crowd acting in anger, which individually they may have regretted later.

As much as I'm not religion's biggest fan this is a quality that many religious people from all faiths have shown over the centuries.

I'm glad the UK authorities and media are reporting is as a terrorist attack. The string of "mass shootings" in the US that American politicians/media have refused to label as terrorist attacks has made me somewhat cynical about it.

I suppose it would be pretty hard to argue it's not a terrorist attack when it's an absolute copycat, though.

Well, the law makes clear it all depends what the intention is in his mind rather that the action itself. In this case it seems clear cut given what witnesses are reporting he was shouting but it won't always be.

He quite clearly matches the dictionary definition of terrorist. Whether or not the legal system is able to recognises that is another matter, but that's ultimately not relevant in the context of what politicians and media can label things as.

Ah yes, I expect nothing less than the Mail. I had the displeasure of viewing Hopkins, Farage and JK Rowling going at it on Twitter, they should all be disappointed in themselves.

From what I've seen on BBC and Sky it looks to have been reported in a similar fashion to other recent attacks though.

I think it's very relevant. If the law says he's a suspected terrorist (apparently the Met identified him/the incident as such inside 8 minutes in this case) it makes it difficult for politicians and the media to do anything but that. Are US law enforcement more circumspect or is the legal definition different there?

The FB have no qualms about recording it as what it is in their official statistics and the like.

Unless the perpetrator is black, brown or Muslim, however, the Big T word is barely ever brought out. The likes of Dylann Roof somehow avoid being labeled as terrorists by the media and politicians. It's "mass shooter" or "white supremacist" or "troubled kid with Confederate leanings". Same deal with "militia" groups like the Oathkeepers and the like.

Meanwhile, San Bernadino sparked a competition to see who could say "terrorist" the most times on most news channels and during politician interviews. It's pretty sad.

    Dreadful tragedy.

You have to wonder how many people are secretly thinking "Ha, how does it feel?" and pretty guaranteed some Trump supporters will claim that man is a patriot.

We now have to worry about escalation,

Not so sure. The sort of lunatic that would consider a terrorist act after something like this is the sort of lunatic that would have considered it before.

To be honest I'm surprised we haven't had more revenge strikes whipped up by the press.
We really need to report what has happened in terrorism cases and then that's it.
Keep names, families everything else out of it. Who reported who, whetehr they werre on a watch list. We as the general public don't need to know that crap and in actual fact, broadcasting it may be a security risk. Any publicity is good publicity for a cause that would consider any sort of action like this it needs to be dealt with and we move one.

What I meant by escalation is, the radicals will undoubtedly try and use this as a recruiting tool. To quote the Untouchables "He pulls a knife, you pull a gun. He puts one of your guys in the hospital, you send one to the morgue"

Obsession. They think on it endlessly fantasising doing it until it happens.

This is why the internet is so important to hate spreading bastards. It allows them to bombard vulnerable, deranged, unhappy individuals a proportion of whom may act upon it. We know that IS has honed this disgusting approach to a fine art persuading people to murder or youngsters to join them. You also see hundreds upon thousands of 'fake' right wing accounts spewing out anti Muslim, anti liberal garbage daily, consumed by people like Tommy Mair who murdered Jo Cox. Up to the big internet companies to act on it.

Named as Darren Osbourne from Cardiff. Father of four.

Aside from all the misery they cause, I cannot get my head around these men, like the Westminster attacker, who do these things and have children. What a legacy are they leaving for their kids.

I've had these discussion with people at work today. He is a terrorist. Being white British doesn't change that.

I fear that this has given the IS extremists a reason now, as if they needed one.

More lives tragically lost, so sad.

There was a member of the press saying yesterday that, as the perp is still alive, they would leave themselves open to being sued if they call him a terrorist. When the PM and the police used the term "act of terror" then they felt able to use the same term.

But if the perp is dead, there is no such concern.

    Horrible

But is this a terror attack?
Follows the modus of similar terror events but isn't it just revenge.
Or have we created Daily Mail Extremists now?

We will have to wait and see what his motives were.
Was he aiming to do this, driving up and down outside a mosque until a target presented itself, what is his background, why he been radicalised to hate muslims so much and if so by who?

I'm not sure that obsessing over the label used to describe him is the most helpful way forward . The way to defeat these people is unity and representation of the core values that our society aspires to.

If I'm being honest the word terrorist is to good for any of these people .They are cold blooded murderers. Surely a far worse label than terrorist , which at least implies some kind of political motivation.

It was a very powerful positive gesture from the Iman and sends a very strong message to all communities , to be united in peace.

It was a similar gesture , albeit on a different scale , made by Nelson Mandela that averted massive civil unrest when apartheid was overthrown .

He doesn't need to be part of a terrorist organisation to be a terrorist. His attack was religiously motivated and designed to spread chaos in a populace.

I believe that , describing a mans facial hair is part of police procedure for describing suspects along with build, hair colour etcetc.

Although I've not read The Mail on this ,I wouldn't disagree with your sentiment that it's reporting is poor and inflammatory , as it so often is .

I agree with this but of course terrorism doesn't always cause death. For example, it seems that in this instance there is some doubt whether the fatality was caused by the van attack.
