Deeney wins a lot of admirers for his honest assessments and insights, and he's been on good media form today. But he's been describing himself as ugly, a battering ram, someone to rough 'em up etc. He's also been quick to say how he's not the most gifted player etc. But I'm sorry Troy, I don't see it this way. So much more to his game than some powerful target man with limited skill. He's an intelligent player with a decent first touch. He can look ungainly but he has guile and we all know he likes the ball played to his feet. He changed the game today not just because he's willing to outmuscle defenders and rough teams up. He read the game well, was willing to put himself about yes, and had their defenders scared but showed plenty of skill on the ground and in the air, on the ball and off it. In short, I think the normally arrogant **** needs to stop putting himself down.
He was superb today, on and off the field. He has created a media personality who is honest and 'fan friendly' but don't get too drawn in to what he says. Some things I feel he says is part of his brand but is also built on honesty. A true Watford legend and a breath of fresh air in the media. He's a very intelligent guy and knows exactly what he's saying. The fact is that he's always the last player to leave the field and brings the club and fans closer together.
It's a real balance, silky skills can be beat by quickness of mind which in turn can be beat by sheer guts.... I love Troy but he's one dimensional and when brute force isn't working (although he's never a passenger) he lacks the invention required for a top 6 team ..... However in mechanic's terms he can be a real nutcracker, exploiting weakness is his forte and it's where he should concentrate if he wants to enjoy these lofty heights ... I know it's a bench role but what a choice to have! Saying all that, Gray is not Aguero by a million miles, it's time he bucked up.
It's down to humility. He's confident but not arrogant and he knows he's not the most technically gifted or fastest player so he plays to his strengths. It's a sign of maturity.
Fat, ugly and old **** then. I can't think of any other fat, ugly old **** I'd rather have in my team though. It did feel a little like "Troy with Mojo" today. And when he's got that, he is priceless.
It's a sign of being a true leader ... and a realist, there are 265,000,000 footballers in this world and the PL is amongst if not the best ... we are 4th
Interestingly on BT Sport after the game and catching up on his appearance after getting home, he said he wanted to go into coaching, which surprised me as he's built up a bit of a personality media wise. Good on him, so happy he's here and still has performances like yesterday in his locker. He might not be the same guy or in the same role as 13/14, or 14/15 but we'll bloody miss him when he hangs up his boots or leaves. (Fully aware he's only 29)
Looks great media wise. Down to earth and honest. As for play, for those calling for him to start. We need to trust Silva. There is a reason he is being used as a sub. Playing with a false striker like Gray means the opposition have to defend a certain way against an attack from the whole of midfield. They get used to this then you add in Deeney as a threat and they spread to thin covering him as well
The standard of his team mates has probably made him believe he's no longer the biggest fish in the pond. If so, I think he's way wrong. A fit, energetic, nasty Deeney will always cause opponents huge problems, more than any other player we have - even if he doesn't start, what a player to be able to bring on to drag us over the line! He's just a fantastic team player and proves it time and again.
Been critical of TD of late but he was immense yesterday. Would be dissapointed if he didnt start next game.
Arsenal fans dismissing Deeney's comments as he has never represented his country. I take it they mean the country that got bullied out of the last Euros by f***ing Iceland. Bell ends.
Carl Jenkinson has represented his country. I'd take no notice of them. Troy is pretty savvy though - providing soundbites that offer a contrast to the media-trained, monotonous drawl that sends fans to sleep. He may genuinely just be an honest, straightforward individual, but he's not stupid either.
As so many have been saying for the past few months on this site, I think Deeney needs to be sold immediately. What has Deeney ever done for Watford? Granted he scores goals, creates chances for others, scares the opposition, leads the team on the pitch, looks after the young and international players off the pitch, acts as a go between for the fans and the club, turned down the chance to earn more money at another club to stay at Watford, set up a foundation to benefit young disabled children in the local community, was the goalscorer in one of Watford's most momentous moments in history, stands up for the players, is good with the media and helps promote Watford at every opportunity ....................................................but apart from that what has Deeney ever done for Watford. Get rid of him NOW.
It was probably his best 30 minutes in about 19 months. I've been one of his main critics on here, and I was one of the first to praise his efforts at the weekend. But he needs to do it more often than once in a blue moon to get back to anywhere near his best. After all the publicity his comments got, we are going to see him get a lot more physical attention from the opposition in future. That can go both ways, but hopefully it spurs him on, gets the crowd going and wins a few more free-kicks and penalties.
Troy has much more to his game than physicality - I think the point he was making on Saturday is that most Arsenal players are technically superior to him, so his has to even things out with his presence. Either way it was great to hear some genuine insight from our main man. As for the Troy v Gray argument, I trust Silva's judgement game-by-game and I'm happy to see him rotate them. For Gray to be effective, it's imperative that him and the likes of Pereyra develop an understanding, as he thrives off precise through balls. I'd definitely start with Troy against Chelsea, maybe Gray against Stoke.
My thoughts exactly. We are not set up to make him play on the shoulders of the back 3 or 4 at home. We have pace elsewhere in the team whether at home or away so we play to the strengths of both. At least this season we have options
Yeap, he will get the physical attention. I think that is part of his plan. Deflects from others, draws fouls.
I realise that it is difficult for you to get to every game but I can assure you this was not a "once in a blue moon" performance. In the five minutes he was afforded against Swansea he won the ball to set up Richarlison's winner, against WBA he was involved in the build up for Dacoure's goal and I would suggest his 30 mins against Arsenal was was pivotal in us turning around the scoreline. By my reckoning he has helped add an extra 6 points. You cannot expect him to be the match winner every week but I think he has done enough already to justify the decision not to let him go during the summer as so many on this site wanted. These are just three of the most recent examples of what Deeney has offered. I believe (and please correct me if I am wrong) that you were only able to watch the games I have mentioned on TV or a computer streaming of the game which as I have said on another thread seems to give a different perspective. Having attended the games I can assure you that Deeney is doing a lot more than perhaps you are able to see from a TV or from a live feed.
I love Troy, really my only criticism of him is he obviously likes the reputation of being the ‘big man’ he likes to be seen as a big brute, a battering ram, it’s how he wants everyone to perceive him. That’s all well and good, but I think if he was his more slender self from his earlier days then he’d have a decent combination of size, pace and manoeuvrability.
