A very good goalkeeper but we shouldn't pay that sort of money on a goalkeeper, I think Baachman is improving every game. Although 10 Million plus Foster anf Deeney wouldn't be bad business.

I agree but the more I read about Johnston the more I like the idea. £10m and a player or two would be good business. In all honesty he could be Englands number very soon.

Can’t wait to splurge £50m on Johnstone and Chris Wood.

Bachmann is good enough, we shouldn't be spending so much of our limited budget on such a deal.

I'd be happy with us signing Wood though.

Never going to happen, but still.

Let's see how Bachmann gets on at the Euros first. He'll have more to do than behind Watford's world-class* back line.

Copying this from my post in Bachmann's Team Bus Thread as it's relevant:

They both have put up very similar numbers shot stopping wise, with Foster claiming 1-2 more crosses a game but also has been out of position more either on or off the ball. His positioning has been slightly more aggressive. Bachmann's distribution has been more risky but also lead to either a FK, Corner or Shot within 20 seconds of him distributing the ball which indicates a tactically aware goalkeeper who can read the pitch well.

Courtesy of @reids this is Bachmann's GK stats v Johnstone's stats.

This is an interesting one. Both goalkeepers have claimed a similar number of crosses, whilst Johnstone has been found out of position regularly leading to dangerous situations. Johnstone's positioning is deeper than Bachmann's. Also, Bachmann's shot stopping has been found to been of a better quality and as discussed earlier his passing is more risky but provides better end product.

I was surprised at how well Bachmann has scored with his cross claiming but his passing pretty much tallies in with what we've seen. His shot stopping seems about right too when using the eye test. His passing has been very good but it's also worth noting that this is against lower quality opposition who will naturally give away more space to smart runners such as Sarr to then create more Positive Outcomes. Based on what we have and who we're linked with, I would say Bachmann is currently our best option while Dahlberg can certainly grow more with his distribution. If he does, that will give Bachmann serious food for thought.

Is it worth comparing Johnstone to Bachmann though when the former was facing far better attackers and playing in a team that sat in the bottom 3 places all season? Bachmann was playing behind the best defence in the Championship. Those kinds of things would skew the data surely?

It's almost as if Bachmann's 'inability' to claim crosses has been blown out of proportion.

Reids just came up with the goods, and you're completely correct:

    Bach v John 19.20.png

Bachmann still has posted good stats and Johnstone is still guilty of poor positioning, but Johnstone took a higher line, claimed a very large number of crosses and saved a higher percentage of shots / positive outcomes. I wasn't expecting such a dominant display but there it is. He also had less dangerous passes.

I'd still be more than comfortable with Bachmann in goal and on a sentimental level he's more than earned it, but if we could get Johnstone on a good price then it does show a clear improvement. I think Bachmann's cross claiming wouldn't be as big an issue in the Prem as it is in the Championship except for outliers such as Burnley and I am concerned by how frequently Johnstone is out of position but you can't deny what else he brings.

The jury is out on Bachmann for me - I do agree he's earned his spot and is worthy of PL opportunity. But we must remember he's not played for long and the strikers he faces week in-week-out next season will be better than anything he's faced before by-and-large. I don't think we have seen enough to know if he's good enough or not.

Doubt he will get a game -he is their 3rd choice keeper I think (certainly not 1st choice - Schlager ?)

The thing for me is we know Foster was just about good enough for the PL and Bachmann did just as well as him, if not slightly better, after coming in this season - and the stats seem to back that up. This suggests to me that Bachmann will similar to Foster be at least just about good enough for the PL next season as well. He also still has plenty of time to improve further as a goalkeeper.

I just think Bachmann falls down on a lack of big game time. That's another of those classic metrics that there's no stat for really. Otherwise I agree Foster is pretty much his equal...but 2015 Gomes was a class above both.

Bachmann’s ‘passes in to danger’ stat is better (% goes down as you move out), but similarly that means that Johnstone has done well for not being caught out of position.

Absolutely any deal that is 'plus Deeney' would be cracking business.

I'm not sure that's the case. Apparently their regular no. 1 has been dodgy recently, hence Bachmann playing the other day.

Bachmann is pretty good and I like his attitude.

He's not a proven Prem keeper though, so is a risk.

Foster is still decent but not as good as 2+ years ago.

I'd be happy to get a new option but not if it meant no new striker / LW.

I guess the thing to take on board here is that Sam Johnstone wasn’t a proven PL GK until this season.

    Sure.

But that doesn't guarantee Bachmann will make it at Prem level. It's a gamble based on what we've seen so far of him.

Does nothing that Bachmann can't do. Hard pass especially for the money being mentioned.

How much would Johnston realistically be? Ideally I wouldn't want to pay too much for him (Bachmann may be untested, but he's not exactly some random geezer off the streets, and Johnstone hasn't exactly been putting Alisson type performances for yonks now) when we've got far more pressing issues. If our big signings up front are Elliott on loan and Santos Borre on a free, then go ahead, splurge a bit (although it'd probably be a moot point as I'm sure a bigger club will come in and gazump us)
