A strange piece put up today (9/7/2018) by an official source in Ecuador, Futbol Ecuador, which I found via twitter.

It seems to suggest he's still in Ecuador but expects to attend pre-season with Watford FC.
The article also suggests he's 50% owned by WFC & 50% owned by Ecuadorian side L.D.U. Quito (Liga de Quito) who play in the country's top division, Serie A. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L.D.U._Quito)

    Screen Shot 2018-07-09 at 21.15.58.jpg

The wording on the picture translates as "I am learning many things."

Here's the link to the written article which also includes a video (1min 46sec long, not in English.)
    http://www.futbolecuador.com/site/noticia/estoy-aprendiendo-muchas-cosas-video/93084

    Translation of text via Google translate;

Pervis Estupiñán is in the country waiting for its future to be defined. Everything indicates that he will return to the team that owns his sports rights, but at the moment he focuses on his family.

Pervis Estupiñán valued the season he had with UD Almería in the Second Division of Spain, and confirmed that after spending a few days with his family, he will have to attend the preseason with Watford FC.

Everything points to Estupiñán, after a couple of years of adaptation to football in Europe, specifically in Spain, will finally receive the call of his coach to play in the Premier League in England.

However, the soccer player of Ecuadorian nationality, for whom Liga de Quito maintains fifty percent of his sports rights, assured that he has not yet received an official notification; except the date on which it must be presented again.

Our country’s future is certainly waiting to be defined.

Pervis seems a shrewd young man & I recommend we sign then loan straight out to the Cabinet.

Most open play passes and crosses completed into the box in La Liga this season:

    64 • Pervis Estupiñán (22)

    62 • Martin Ødegaard (21)

    60 • Lionel Messi

Estupiñán is an energetic, adventurous full-back with good crossing, tackling and ball-carrying. His crossing technique is distinctive - almost like a knuckle-ball. In Europe's top five leagues this season, no player has completed more crosses into the box than Estupiñán's 26. The Watford loanee has completed over twice as many dribbles and made the most tackles of any Osasuna player this season. Interestingly, his two-year loan deal has a recall option at the end of this season, something Watford may well exercise given their options at left-back.

It might depend on the size of any offered fee and the length of his contract with us. According to transfermarkt (which I'm not sure is always reliable on such things) it ends summer 2021, which unfortunately would probably force our hand to sell if we got relegated.

If he was under contract for any longer, and if he understandably refused to play in the Championship if we were relegated, then it could be preferable to have him spend one more year in La Liga in the hope that we could bring him back if we got promoted again.

Hasn't Todibo already rejected us twice?! If so then would he eventually agree to join us if Barca agreed to him being part of a deal?

As for Firpo, absolutely no chance he comes here, he rejected Man Utd to join Barca initially. He should still end up at another top European side somewhere.

Barca also paid EUR 18mil + 12mil add-ons for Firpo, so any fee for Pervis should be close to that. Not a chance we'll sell for 10mil.

Sounds perfect for us. Put some pressure from both sides, maybe trick him a little bit and he can be a disgruntled, problematic, talented but never shows it player in our stable of misfits.

Like Suarez bags of ability. Solid, aggressive, physical machine and not afraid to get forward if required. We would be underselling enormously at 10M. Again I would like to see him here although he would be fighting it out with Masina as Holebas is surely on the way out. Given that Messi has been throwing his influence around he would like to see Tagliafico at the Nou Camp and some of his other chums from the seleccion have been linked as well. Martinez and Foyth. There is no doubt he has been mightily impressive all season from the get go.

Currently out of all of La Liga defenders he currently has:

    Most take-ons completed
    Most ball recoveries
    Most tackles made
    Most duels won

Gonna try and catch some Osasuna games before the PL comes back!

That will probably depend on us staying up.

It'd be a shame if we go down just before it seems some of our many South American punts finally start to pay off, e.g. with him and Suarez.

I reckon he'd probably still join us even if we were in the Champ; it's hardly as if he's been pulling up any trees in La Liga.

I watched Pervis play for Osasuna in their 1-1 vs Real Sociedad yesterday. His performance was very erratic.

He was playing as the left-sided player in a 3-5-2/5-3-2.

He seems to only really be adept at playing on the front foot - he's rapid, direct, and is excellent at making interceptions and also running in to space off the ball.

However, his crossing when he got in to good positions was typically done quickly without looking, as if the ball was a hot potato, and usually ended up going absolutely nowhere. It was rather odd and disappointing as his more standard passing, and ball retention when under pressure, seemed pretty good and sharp.

The other big problem is he seems all over the place when having to try and defend on the back foot; it didn't seem too difficult for players to run passed him, and a couple of times he hot-headedly stuck out a leg without getting the ball, risking giving away a penalty.

I'm not sure where he'd fit in to our current system really - as a left-back in a back 4 I think he could be a defensive liability, I'd only play him there in a team set out to play on the front foot and with a very solid CB able to cover for him and that's not really us right now. He probably doesn't offer enough attacking threat to be the left-sided forward player in our 4-3-3 either. He'd really need to be played as either a wing-back or even the left-sided midfielder in a solid 4-4-2 to get the most out of him I reckon. At a stretch maybe the left-back in a solid 4-4-2, but he'd need someone like a Hughes in front of him willing to track back and also rotate with when to go forwards.

I can see why some bigger clubs might be interested in him, but he still has a lot to work on and the caveats about his playing style and lack of adaptability are noteworthy.

I watched one of his games earlier on in the season and wasn't too impressed but with all the praise he's received I think I must've watched an off-game, I started to watch last nights game but was watching pretty halfheartedly and sacked it in after 15 mins or so. Regarding his tackling style, it is a bit wayward but generally successful - most tackles made and most ball recoveries won out of the rest of the defenders in La Liga, only averages 1.1 fouls committed P90 as well which is better than Masina and Holebas
