    Watford 1 Brighton 1 After Brighton took the lead, VAR awarded Watford a penalty for a handball against Murray, from a Pereyra free kick.

    Everton 1 Watford 2. Watford came back from a goal down to snatch all three points. Deulofeu was awarded a penalty after being fouled in the box and late in the game Doucoure grabbed the winner with a simple tap in a few yards from goal

    Watford 2 West Ham 1. After conceding early to a West Ham penalty, Watford came from behind to snatch all three points. Will Hughes scored the winner at the back post with a shot on the line that would’ve been harder to miss

    Newcastle 0 Watford 1. Watford scored early and held on with a battling performance. However, the hornets can consider themselves fortunate as VAR came to their rescue and disallowed a Newcastle goal for handball

    Watford 3 Arsenal 2. Great battling performance by Watford after going two nil down. Watford’s winner came in the dying moments as Doucoure swept the ball home, finishing a move he started in the watford half

    Manchester City 2 Watford 0 Watford we’re well organised at the back and didn’t concede early on as City piled on the pressure. Ben foster’s year’s of experience showed as he wasn’t to be fooled into bringing Marez down in the box. Watford finally caved in the second half and conceded two late goals. Well deserved shirt swapping at the final whistle

    Wolves 0 Watford 0. QSF reverts to three at the back ( should have been ! ) Watford grind out a draw

    Watford 2 Sheffield United 0. After Gray’s goal was disallowed for offside, Watford went on to get three points in a comfortable and solid win. Danny Welbeck and Graig Dawson both scored their first premier league goals for the club

    Fine margins

    17 points??? Holy crap we would be right up there with Liverpool as title challengers.

    @Vicarage Road wake up.... your stepping into delusion. I think it's too many Pukka Pies and over priced water from the Vic.

    Be great though, if those results really did happen. We can dream.

    We should be at least 4 points better off I would say.

    Yes I would say we have not had the rub of the green either with decisions or with our players missing so many easy chances. I'd imagine our "XG" performance is pretty useful.

    Quite. And if half of that had happened we'd be comfortably in mid-table.

    Yep. We'd have 8 more points if our games had followed the xg of the games. So creating chances is not the problem. We'd have scored 7 more and let in 5 less.

    I'm guessing we have therefore been unlucky with the goals let in. I know are defence had been a shambles but presumably that would just lead to a higher xg against as well as goals.

    The reason for the gap in our xg for is clear for all to see. At the moment we miss lots of good chances, and half chances.

    I have never looked up xGoals until this evening.

    Really hits home that we have been statistically incredibly unfortunate so far this season.

    Of course you make your own luck and all that, but it seems unlikely that things could possibly carry on in this manner indefinitely...

    Yeah, that is the hope. I was listening to a podcast that didn’t worry about us being relegated as real life and xg tends to even out. For instance our 4 game winning run at the start of the season was Not backed up by xg - and we couldn’t keep up the form,.

    the worry is, do we have the players to averagely score from goal scoring opportunities.

    gray = No
    Deeney a= probably yes
    Welbeck = TBC
    Our midfield = yes they can, but they aren’t at the moment

    I don’t think ‘expected goals’ is a measure of creativity necessarily. As I understand it, it just measures the frequency a team finds itself with the ball in the vicinity of the goal and in which relative positions, however that occurs. The trouble is, putting the ball in the net is an integral part of being a successful football team, so if you’re no good at it you’ll always have a poor return against a high ‘xG’. You can’t put it all down to bad luck.

    Spot on. Arsenal and Sheffield United should have been wins not draws.

    And what about all those sitters Man City missed? If they'd been scored it might have been 8-0

    Why would quique revert to three at the back? He'd still be unemployed!

    Possession and expected goals might be fun to divert us from today's reality in this universe - but if you cannot defend and cannot score the rest is irrelevant
