Apparently he's missing the opening game at the AFCON to attend a wedding. That's the kind of commitment needed at the Vic.

I know - part of the joke was meant to be that for once the statement could be posted with it actually being true.

The ‘open secret’ that Villa were struggling to attract players is beginning to feel like it wasn’t true.

    Appalled.

I'm more appalled that the rumour that we were in for him has turned out to be an absolute load of ********.

I really believed in it too.

Another signing for Villa. They've signed 11 players and spent over £130m!! Wow...….£130m.

What have they got for that massive sum of money? I've looked at their team, and ok there are a couple of "punts" who may turn out to be good, I'm really not too impressed with the overall quality.

They've fallen into the trap of "doing a Fulham". Spending big but still have to create a team from all the new players.

Dean Smith, is an up-and-coming manager, but his CV before Villa was Walsall and Brentford. It's a massive job for him to make a team from scratch.

I just think Villa could well be this season's Fulham, rather than Wolves.

When we were promoted we brought in 13 players and started 6 of them at Goodison. Quite a few shockers in there as well who never played! (Diamante, Ibarbo, Berghuis)

I don't remember us spending £130m in doing that though.

Not sure the fees matter? The point is player integration. We spent about £40m that summer which is a lot for us, plus add 5 years of transfer inflation.

We didn't spend our entire annual budget on buying them though, and I'm assuming they are all expecting to be paid. If Villa have got this wrong and go straight back down the ramifications could be huge.
Norwich's approach over the years seems far more sustainable. Get promoted, buy nobody, get relegated, be a rich dan in the Championship with the parachute payments for a couple of years. Rinse and repeat.

Villa’s owners are very rich. I’m sure they will be fine unless the owners bail. And if they do go back down, they know they can sell Grealish and a few others and make a lot back.

It’s a lot of money but much like Fulham have shown, they can afford it.

Villa’s only concern would be championship FFP. Their owners have 5 times more net worth than Everton.

I’d argue 40 million for us was a bigger gamble than 130 million for Villa.

Fees are very important. It reflects Villa's desperation to stay in the Premier league. When you are in that state of mind, as a club, you tend to make mistakes.

No one in their right mind would pay £26m for Tyrone Mings, a player who Bournemouth didn't want, even though their defence is leakier than ours.

Konza a centre back from Brentford for £12m, Jota a winger from Birmingham for £4m, Matt Target from Southampton for £14m, who was only really a squad player for them.

They have signed quite a few players without top league experience, or paid a heavy fee for squad players from lower Premier League clubs.

It all seems like panic buying to me, just as it did for Fulham last season.

40m five years ago is probably a similar amount given the transfer fee inflation. The top transfer fees that summer were around 25-30 million. They would be 100 million today.

    We did exactly the same.
