Yeah that is a good point about Holebas being suspended. The good news is the Christmas stretch is filled with 6 winnable games so if we needed Mason we could use him but whether he is up to the task I don't know.

He's not a bad player but I don't see him as an upgrade for Crazy Jose. I'd rather we went for someone a bit younger for that kind of money

For those who haven't realised yet, he will be 30 around the time when the season starts. 30 is the age where the value of players is halved and the player's capabilities is on the downfall... So in essence, we are supposedly spending £8,000,000 on a soon to be 30 year old Left Back who's no better than what we already have.

I'd much rather have Kenedy or Ake who are young and have spent some time at our club already.

    Too old
    Not good enough
    £8m?
Nice bloke though, seems a decent reason to sign him
Not an improvement on what we've got

I would said yes but not at 8 million - a lot for a reserve full back probably coming to the latter part of his career.

I'd have him & for however much the Pozzo's are willing to spend. Some on here would think it's their own money being used!

    I wouldn't say no - it'll be a structured deal worth up to £8m

To be honest, holebas has been linked with moves away a few times already this summer. so I wouldn't rule out friend & mason being our left back options.

Does anyone actually have any proper justification for the Brandon Mason love-in other than a couple of half decent performances against a Championship side and a League one side?

He may well turn out to be great and I hope he does, but he's shown absolutely nothing to suggest he's ready to be thrown into the Premier League yet, and he'd be far better off being loaned out next season than sitting on our bench.

If we are going to raid the Championship I'd be much happier with someone like Jordan Amavi at Villa who is only 23.

Why are we even looking for a LB other than back up.

If we buy him and Hughes for 8 mill each that's 16 mill spent on squad back ups .

I thought the idea this summer was only to buy 2 or 3 high quality first team players ?

What has Mason done wrong in the appearances he has made for you to suggest he's not good enough?

I thought we might go for him that summer.

Not so keen now but depends on the price.

    Will Holebas stay?

Ake would be 12 mill. Better player with much bigger resale .

We ran out of players at the end of last season or so it seemed. I think we need more like 6-8 new faces, with similar departures.

George Friend is a good player right at his peak. What's not to like?

Still room for the marquee signings.

He is half decent but 8 mill is a lot for someone who will be 30 years , by two months into the season , and who has only played 1 season of top flight football where he kinda did ok .

Plus we ve already got Holebas who is a better player, and with more experience at top level .

Can we just sign the hair and put it on Holebas/Mason as and when they play? The hair has always been his most impressive asset and we could probably bring it in at under £2m.

If you prefer Holebas you have to be ready to deal with 2 or 3 red cards and associated suspensions plus those he wracks up with accumulated yellows. Probably worth 6-9 points in total. Points that could easily be critical.

Just the fact that his peak isn't very high. And he's expensive as he's British. And he's getting on.

Gino is just testing the Boro water, probably planning a double raid if not triple raid on the club and gonna snap up Gibson and Traore too.

Always liked this guy when I've seen him, and always wanted us to sign him. HG as well which we need. I believe he has been their captain this season? Or at least for some of their games I'm sure. This suggests some leadership qualities, probably vocal which again we need. Even at 30 we will get 3 good years so it's really not that big a fee. Would be very happy with this. Holebas may not be so happy as I feel Friend is his equal and could easily take the left back slot if he did sign.

His peak is pretty good so says many. If you believe whoscored's rating for Holebas you'll find Friend's was very marginally higher.

I'd rather he was rated 85 on FIFA and 22, but I'm sure we have assessed the options.

Spot on - gets latitude because he is home grown but is only vaguely promising and is nowhere near first team. Loan to L1 or lower champ for next year
