MLS deputy commissioner Ivan Gazidis has welcomed the prospect of David Beckham playing in America.

The Real Madrid ace has indicated he would be interested in finishing his career with a spell in America.

Beckham, who is currently negotiating a new deal at Madrid, would be a massive draw for fans in America as they look to increase the popularity of the game.

Gazidis believes the arrival of Beckham to MLS would prove to be a massive success.

"We have 65 million people that are connected by soccer in this country but they're not rabid yet," Gazidis told The Sun.

"That's the challenge and the opportunity of soccer in the US and it's the challenge and the opportunity for David Beckham in the United States.

"Whoever is able to connect and activate that massive potential fan base wins.

"And if Beckham can do that and help MLS do that, those are the kinds of marriages made in heaven.”

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Way to end ya international career!!
Would be the biggest mistake of his footballing life!

They're welcome to him, but I think he's got a couple of years in Europe yet.

What ever happened to that Zone Football thing they tried to introduce when then had the world cup?

Admin, can be ban the word soccer from these boards? I promise it will be the last time I ever say it.

    Banned.

I have nothing but the greatest respect for footballers who go out at the very top level. I always view the others who grasped at their failing careers as individuals who didn't know when to quit. For example Gazza, who went through each league in turn as his body gave up, what a sad and pathetic way to end a glorious career. Beckham doesn't need the money, but I fear he needs the adulation. I hope he doesn't do a Gazza, I really do.

    me too.

I know alot of yanks from online and the amount of times i have had the american football/football discussion is unreal.. they refuse to admit that we play football, even though the game they claim as "football" it is rare that the foot is used more than 3% of the time in the entire game.
Also they dont appreciate that we had professional football teams and a league before their game was created and that our football was being played before their country was even found!!!
I have also explained to them that their own footballing body the MLS is governed by FIFA which as we all know stands for Federation of International Football Associations, and one of the people i had the discussion with claimed they were not to which i stated that in that case they wouldnt be eligible to play in the FIFA world cup and certainly wouldnt be eligible to host it as they did a few years ago!!!
I guess we should just try to remember that USA is the centre of the universe as they like to think which is why they have a competition called the World series in which only teams from america and canada can play!!!!
Sad really, one of the worlds youngest countries thinking it is the world!!!

And no-one tell me not to let it get to me so much... i cant help it... they ANNOY MEEEEEE!!!!! lol

It's changing in the U.S., but very slowly. Kids over there right now are football mad, and as they get older it'll spread and become bigger and bigger. It's such a huge country with a high percentage of people sports mad, that if they ever did take football seriously they could be a World force in less than a decade. Shame they did so badly in the World Cup this year!

I hope he does well out there, hopefully my Northern Rock shares will go up enough that I’ll be able to afford a trip out there to see him play.

Grew out of it, or passed away !?! Always concerns me when I think of a poster who suddenly stopped posting without a "That's it, I'm off. **** the lot of you" announcement.
Like Nnnn/Nnnnn, PhillipineOrn(?), Watfordtalk, for example.
