It happens every summer, but when does ‘this season’ become ‘last season’?
And when does ‘next season’ become ‘this season’?
Do they happen at the same moment, or is there a period when there is no ‘this season’ at all?
Of course, this time round it’s even more complicated. The big boys in Europe are still playing ‘last season’, while the Scots are already into ‘next season’.
Or are they both ‘this season’?

I thought things generally reset on July 1st. Seems logical.

My son thinks "next Friday" is what we call "this Friday". Causes no end of confusion.

So this season's Champions League competition has almost completed already ? That's good going. Who won last season's competition ?

Don't worry about that. The rule applies to the important football.

Semantically speaking, he's right. Was always a bit of a weird colloquialism.

I'm still clinging on to it being this season.

Although I’ve been married for over 40 years, my wife still doesn’t like it when I call her my “ first wife “

Technically he is right. If it helps....

The next Friday is this Friday unless it is Friday, in which case next Friday is next Friday and not this Friday because this Friday is today. Following Fridays become next Fridays as preceding Fridays become last Fridays, but as soon as Friday comes around again "last Friday" becomes incorrect because it wasn't the last.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks, Meister. That clears it up, no more confusion.
