I have just finished reading about Scotland's 1978 Argentina campaign and the Willie Johnston affair and it is shocking how he was treated and thrown under the bus by the SFA. Whilst he had a terrible disciplinary record, albeit the vast majority of sending offs were for retaliation, and the SFA did not want him selected for any squads , Willie Ormond and later Ally McLeod saw differently and could see the benefits with having one of the best players of a generation in their teams . It is a long story in which some people do not come out of it very well, Archie Gemmill, Lou Macari, Leopold Luque , Trevor McDonald (yes, THE TMac!) The SFA and others . Others did their best for him Bruce Rioch , Don Masson , Ally McLeod and Ron Atkinson when Willie arrived back home . However there is an alternative story from The Sun , Mirror etc and if you believe that one then......guilty as sin .
